String sucking beam

String sucking beam - 03/21/16 06:38 PM

I'm trying to get a new-to-me Taipan 4.9 back up to snuff, and I was wondering how to run the down haul and rotator lines. There are mentions of them being led or sucked into the front beam, but I can't figure it out. There are openings in the beam, so that's easy, but is there any tensioning? How do you rig that? Thanks in advance.

Check page 47 here for a diagram of the C2 cunningham/downhaul takeup:

Jib sheet takeup is a bit simpler but I couldn't find a drawing. Attempting to describe here:

For Starboard jib sheet, bungie starts at stbd end-cap, goes inside beam to a block on port side, then returns inside beam to stbd side where it is attached to the stbd sheet. Unstretched bungie is usually a bit more than beam length. You may have to adjust length to get the right tension. I found it is easier to attached the bungie to the sheet on the port side and then pull it through as needed.

Reverse for port side sheet.

btw - not all bungie is created equal - don't ask me how I know smile . Go for the good stuff

I don't have any special takeup for the rotation control. Just looped around the side-stay and terminated at the tramp.

Thanks for the heads up on the shock chord, I had no idea. To me, this boat is like a big puzzle. Fast, but a lot to figure out, and I really appreciate the rigging info.

Don't be afraid to do some google searches too.

This forum has some old threads that would be helpful too. Like this one: http://www.catsailor.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=22327

Looks like there is a wealth of information out there. Good luck!
