Samson Rope Flavored Ice

I can't find it in the online store, or the local chandelries. Anyone know how to get some? I need to cover a 3/8" cored line so it grabs in my spinlock.

I guess I could buy some 10mm rope and just use that cover, but the flavored ice looks much nicer...

Yeah, my supplier has not gotten back to me on that yet. Of course, I have been away from the computer for 3 days traveling north to Put-in-Bay for the summer

I'm guessing at $4.96 per foot you may be thinking twice.
Not trying to pitch my own stuff here but I'd recommend finding something else.
There's a reason you can't easily find this rope. PBO is an exotic fiber which should be reserved for grand prix sailboats and replaced often.
Some of the skiff guys use it but it's uses are mostly being replaced by technora.
PBO is used because it's the strongest and most reliable fiber if you plan to replace it often.
It is the worst fiber for environments with a lot of UV. I have a customer in San Diego that replaces his running backstay with PBO cover every year.
Vectran, while better in UV is not much better. Some of the grand prix boats use it in cover as well but for it's great abrasion properties.
Both are very strong while they are new but when they go they go with no notice, they are disposable for as soon as they start to look suspect they have to go.
What boat are you using it on? Should be no reason standard polyester shouldn't do the job. If you want something more abrasion resistant then step it up to something with Technora. If you're looking for something pretty, polyester can be made to look even cooler than flavored ice, any high end rigger will have more modern looking ropes.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing... the website says it is a cover only (no core) that i can use to beef up my 3/8" line so it doesn't slip in the rope clutch. My rope clutch can handle 3/8" as the smallest size, so it does slip occasionally when tensioned up (it's old and probably needs a new cam).

The line on there currently is 3/8" (possibly warpspeed II) with the extra cover where it grips the spinlock. Obviously serves dual purpose: won't slip in rope clutch and tells me when I'm at full hoist.

I have 3/8" Sta-Set X but need to beef up the clutch area with additional cover material...

I picked up a couple of feet of 7/16" cored and 1/2" cored line and will strip the cover off this to see if I can fit it over the 3/8" line and lock stitch/whip.

How do you determine what model a Spinlock is? I can't see where the model # or type is printed/listed on it, but it looks like an earlier generation than the ones in the store now.. They're probably 10 years old...

You really don't want to bulk the over over the outside. It will jam up entering the clutch. You need to insert line into the middle of the halyard to "bulk" it up. Try pulling 3/16" amsteel/dyneema into the core.

Also for the clutch to work best, bulk up to the max line diameter for the clutch rating. At the bottom end of the range, the rope will almost always slip.

Interesting you said that Mike. I was just thinking the same thing (bulking up the core vs. the cover).

My current 3/8" has the extra cover tapered over 40 cm or so which makes it gradual increase in thickness.

But I do have some Amsteel (maybe even 3/16") I could jam in the core and taper a bit.

I will say that core on the Sta-Set X is rather sticky when trying to extract through the cover. I can't remember what blend of fibers they are using (gold and white) but it took a while to get my shackle eye spliced up.

Course, I may try that rope shackle doo-dad, but would that be recommended for a mainsail halyard shackle?

That's a good bit more expensive and what would be the benefit? Sounds like more weight aloft (I've got a 30 ft. run up the mast), I'm not sure what the working load is (this is cleated at the bottom, not hooked at the top like a beachcat)
