Trailerable cruising cat ideas?

Trailerable cruising cat ideas? - 03/18/03 08:31 PM

I'm looking for designs that would be both easy to trailer, fast to set up, quick sailors, and some camping style accomodations. I'll probably be building in the next few months if I find a design I'm crazy about. I like the reynolds 33 concept, but that would probably be too much boat for me. I've checked out designs by Woods, Schionning, Shuttleworth, etc. Lots of options out there which leads to my present confusion. I like the Woods Wizzer after seeing the study plans, but am looking for more input. Any thoughts?

Does it have to be a catamaran? Ian Farrier is releasing a new kit boat early this year -- the F-22 sport tri. It's billed as an affordable, entry-level, trailerable trimaran that is easy to build. And it's a step up from camping on deck, or squeezing into a hull, because it has a V-berth, optional head and optional galley. The information is at www.f-boat.com.

I've always preferred cats to tris, but this one kind of appeals to me for some reason -- maybe because it is not much longer than a beach cat but has better accommodations than you can normally get on a cat that length without drastically sacrificing speed.

Thanks for the response. I've been following his recent designs with interest and am on the email update for this particular design. Looks cool. Tris would be ok with me--especially since they have folding mechanisms that enable quick launch.

Be sure to look at Kelsall's X-Kat. (http://www.kelsall.com/stdrange.htm) It is a telescoping cat. that rigs and derigs quickly. I have only seen one. All I can really say, is it when together fast and didn't sink before it went out of sight.

The idea of building starts out like a great idea. I spent 7 months getting my boat ready. Everyone else was going sailing while I was sanding. But it's done and the boat is in the water after 250 hours of repair. Starting from scratch will take 4 to 8 times the hours. Only reason it took me only 250 hours was the original owner worked on the boat for 5 years and never got it to the water!

To me the ideal cruising cat is a Stiletto. You can carry 4 people and all the stuff for a week. Pitch a tent on the front tramp. And still out sail any leaner. S27 carries more than the S23. S23 takes 4 hours to setup. S27 takes 3 hours. From $6000 and up, you can sail this spring. I figure any boat will take 6 grand+ to build.

I agree with SpinakerJohn, (I also have a Stiletto 27) the S27 is probably the best kept secret in that size boat. I say secret because they can still be purchased at a fraction of other boats on the market. If you are into building or rebuilding yourself I know (unfortunately) of a Stiletto 27 that was flipped in the marina in a storm. You can get one from Stiletto already rebuilt or get this one and do it yourself.

Staying a week or so would be like camping in a popup or similiar. If you want a motorhome you'll have to dish out the bigger bucks.

I might be interested in the Stiletto that flipped in your marina.
I am trying to revive an old F30 cat (Nivelt Joubert) from which I only purchase the hulls. So I am looking for lots of parts, about everything but the hulls themselves.
You would be kind to tip me on this one.
