Nags Head Sailing - 06/11/03 01:58 PM

I am planning on spending a few days in Nags Head soon and I want to bring my H16. Anyone know of some good launch sites and/or places to sail in that area? Ideally, I would like to rig the boat and leave it for a couple of days if possible. I am somewhat of a novice so I will be confined to the sound side.

Thanks for any input!

I am a beginner and have never sailed on the sound, so you should take anything I say with a grain of salt.

But Jockey's Ridge State Park looks plausible to me:

There's a good map showing the sound access:

Someone told me to watch out for cuts in the Outer Banks - the tide can flow through them and suck you out to sea. If that happens, head to shore quickly. I have no firsthand experience with this.

Along those lines, watch out for shallow water in the sound. You'll be out there, and then all of a sudden your rudders kick up quick.... pain in the butt.

Incidentally, my wife and I stayed here a year ago with our family, and I have been thinking this would be a great place to camp and sail:

Nice place to launch into the sound.

I am not affiliated with them in any way, except that they took my money and let me camp there once.
