Pamlico Sound - any hints or suggestions? - 08/27/03 09:18 PM

My wife and I are going to be spending Labor Day weekend on the Pamlico Sound, at the Hattaras KOA, just south of Rodanthe.

We've never sailed on the sound before. Any hints or suggestions?

You don't have a boarded boat, so you don't have to worry about sandbars.

Keep a sharp eye on the weather. The sound, because its so shallow, can kick up some NASTY chop. We've had greenwater break over the bow of the schock 35 I crew on while crossing the sound. Bring a radio just in case.

I'm envious... wish I could go out there. Beware of traffic.

Hmmmm I don't have a radio. How important is that? Where do you get them on short notice, and for how much?

The various West Marine locations always have several varieties.

I think I got mine for $99 at WM.
