Youth Sailing - 09/08/03 12:46 PM

Why does there not seem to be any interest in multihull sailing from youngsters, our club has almost no-one under 30 let alone under 18. Even when I go to big events like texel there seems to be very few youngsters sailing.

Kids seem to love sailing monohulls like optimists and lasers but not multihulls.

Do you think this is just that I have got the wrong impression or is this is real problem everywhere?

If it is a real problem, why is it so?

Youth Multihull sailing is in it's infancy. There are very few events going on.

I think that if you are looking in a yacht club they will be harder to find on catamarans - the dingies are just so much more accessible (and manageable) for kids. However, last weekend at Catfest on Lake Norman in N.C., out of 30 or so boats we had 4 that were crewed by kids between 9 and 16 years old (and 3 of them placed podium finishes!). The Seacats in Columbia, SC even have a youth commodore and kids are regularly at our fun and racing events.
