Nacra 5.2 chicken line setup

Nacra 5.2 chicken line setup - 08/02/04 08:10 PM

Any recommendations for rigging chicken lines on a 5.2?
Do you run a bungie through the front crossbar (drilling another hole in the end caps)then attach to the line on either side?
Is the best place to attach the line around the gudgeon or rudder pin or.....?
Any particular 'biners better than others?

I really like the idea, having made a few rounds on other boats!

Thanks

We ran ours to the front crossbar and tied off there. Then thru the rear beam with bungee(several loops for length) in the beam with a small block that the line ran thru. Then the line ran back out of the beam and tied off on the rudder gudgeon. This allowed us to be secure from going around the front or(most importantly it turned out) swept off the back.
The article made a good point to not attach the carabiner to you, but to the dogbone.
We would not have made it the first 2 days with out these, and it actually saved energy. We still were getting our feet washed out from under by the BIG waves.
Invaluable for offshore

I also had this article which inspired me to setup something similar on mine.

David - Is your rigging instruction for the 5.2 specifically?
I'm still a little confused on the rear beam description with the block....

David,

I know I didn't - but did you ever use the footstraps on the rear? I seem to remember you in them occasionally - but not very often. Ditto on the chicklines - priceless offshore...although I doubt I would have been up for a pleasure cruise in some of the conditions we went through!

jake,
F18 looks great, cant wait to sail on it. I did have my foot in the forward footstrap almost the entire time. I didnt have my trap line set up to go to the rear strap, and really didnt need it(or felt comfortable back there).

The bungee was doubled up to make it strong, with a small block on each end. It was completely nside of the rear beam. The rope went into the front beam and tied off. Then you run it to the rear beam where it looped thru the small turning block, then back out of the beam and tie off to the rudder gudgeon. Inside the rear beam there is a stiff piece of bungee that is doubled up, and has a small block on each end. You never see the bungee or the blocks. Only the chicken line itself comes thru the hole in the rear beam cap. You have to play with the length, but thats about it, pretty simple.
