Nags Head, North Carolina, January 4, 2005 – Today the Outer Banks Catamaran Club®, Inc. and Tybee Island Sailing Association ® Inc. are announcing the dates for the Second Annual 2005 Atlantic 1000® – “The Ultimate Catamaran Challenge.” From May 8th through May 20th, high-performance catamarans will be screaming up the Eastern Seaboard pitting teams from all over the world against extreme conditions and each other in a race that will challenge the most physically and mentally competent sailors.

The Atlantic 1000® is an alliance of the Tybee 500® and Outer Banks 500® long distance catamaran races. This year’s Atlantic 1000® will be divided into 2 stages, the Tybee stage and the Outer Banks stage. Teams can enter either stage or the overall event. Awards will be given in each stage and for the overall event, giving teams multiple opportunities to earn awards and recognition.

The organizers are excited to start this year’s race in Hollywood, Florida where according to Chuck Bargeron, Head Race Director of the Atlantic 1000®, “The city of Hollywood is rolling out the red carpet for us.” “We expect a really great first day for the race that will entertain everyone and bring out a large crowd of people,” says Bargeron.

The teams will sail up the coast through a series of 12 race legs, encountering changing weather conditions, sandbars, crowded shipping lanes and finishing near the famous Graveyard of the Atlantic – Cape Hatteras.

“This event is without compare,” says Charles Thuman, Assistant Race Director of the Atlantic 1000®. “The teams compete with themselves, other teams and the elements to hopefully complete the grueling 1000 miles.” Wishing for high winds, beautiful days and addictive, adrenalin-pumping sailing, these teams pray for the best and expect the worst. This 1000-mile adventure tests boats, equipment and bodies and is considered the ultimate challenge for catamaran sailors.

“There is nothing like it anywhere –being at the mercy of the high winds, the higher waves and knowing that you’re the only two people for miles of open water – I just love it” says Jon Britt, Assistant Race Director of the Atlantic 1000®. “Teams come from all over the world, like Australia, New Zealand, Nova Scotia, Germany, South America and Holland to compete in this race,” says Bargeron, “During the race you meet so many wonderful people from places you’ve only dreamed about. Much more than a race, the Atlantic 1000® is a fraternity of friends who live to sail fast.”

Re: Atlantic 1000 - - 01/21/05 12:06 AM

GREAT NEWS -thanks ,--hope to make it this year ,-like Hollywood FL great town ,nice folks ,
---some clearification on the start may be needed -
the nor reads -May 10 Islamorada FL to Hollywood FL
May 11 Hollywood to Jensen Beach FL
May 12 Jensen Beach to Cocoa Beach FL
May 13 Cocoa Beach to Ormond Beach FL
May 14 Ormond Beach to Fernandina Beach FL
May 15 Fernandina Beach to Tybee Island GA (finish for the Tybee 500)
but ---the release says ---"The organizers are excited to start this year’s race in Hollywood, Florida where according to Chuck Bargeron, Head Race Director of the Atlantic 1000®, “The city of Hollywood is rolling out the red carpet for us.” “We expect a really great first day for the race that will entertain everyone and bring out a large crowd of people,” says Bargeron."

suspect rather than starting "IN "-it should read starting in Islamorada and finishing or racing to Hollywood ,-
not sure --
Would prefer the start in Hollywood .

Hollywood -Hollywood -Hooolllyyywwoood ---
that was also team outerbanks skippers nickname in previous years -John or {hollywood} ,in reference to the numerous movie video appearances .
oh great ,-now the song Hollywood by Los Lonley Boys will be rolling around until May ,---
lyrics --{{"cause I,m moving on to Hollywood you see , I know I can,t be wrong ,-finally found my home ,-headed where I belong ,-Hollywood ,-Hooolllyywwwoood "}}.

Have fun
Carl

one boat of controversy that is allowed in the great Texas race with the 20s is the ARC 21 ,-that may need a ruling as to allowable entry.

Carl,

Chuck announced during the Key Largo Steeplechase that the Atlantic 1000 start will take place in Hollywood, likely sail South to some course mark, then back to Hollywood. Day 2 will again start from Hollywood but begin the trip northward. The race will not visit the Keys on land this year.

Re: Atlantic 1000 Announced and the NORs! - 01/21/05 05:49 AM

Thanks, but I am looking for the Texel rating for the Nacra 6.0na.

Re: Atlantic 1000 Announced and the NORs! - 01/21/05 06:10 AM

nacra SE = nacra special edition. I think this was a try out in Europe but never really caught on.

But it could be very close to the Nacra 6.0 NA spec. At least close than Nacra 6.0 as the Europeans know it.

Re: Atlantic 1000 - - 01/21/05 03:58 PM

thanks again Jake -

Really appreciate Chuck and all his efforts, Tybee is lucky to have him and so are we with his organization and longterm involvement of this event .
Hollywood START , sounds good , NO offence intended to the keys ,but traffic getting there is terrible .
Which team members are from Hollywood ? As Fred mentions above it is a great way to promote the sport, event , and local tourism to the municipalities along the 1000 mile course along the Eastern seaboard.
WOW -just realized I haven,t sailed the I-20 since the 03 Tybee 500 ,-a little rusty this May ! Maybe a different 20 this time . Would like to try an Arc 21 . Do enjoy the event and think it is good to discuss and offer opinions and potential options along with information and experiences of past events.
Looking out the office window here in MI today at 12 degree F temps with half a foot more snow forcast for this evening , I enjoy the winter season ,skating ,-x country skiing etc .but Hollywood FL ,warm temps ,tropical sun,and racing another 1000 on the Atlantic sounds pretty good about now .
Hope we see 30 plus teams on the start line {in Hollywood}
all the best

Isn't the ARC21 twenty one feet long? (race permits boats no greater than 20')

Besides .... - 01/21/05 11:14 PM

Besides you don't want to race an ARC 21 under the Texel rating system. To much sail area for the generally strong winds. Texel of course has no wind adjustments

Website is up www.atlantic1000.com. We have the press release, NOR, registered teams, registration forms and contact information up. The hotel information will be up shortly as there are several new locations in Florida. We should also have the official sailing instructions posted soon. All information on this race will be on this site and not on the old obx500 or tybee500 sites. We are looking forward to a great event and hope everyone watches the website for updates and breaking news.
