Anyone have any recommendations on listening to music while sailing? More like something like an IPOD or something. Now, I know one should be safe and not listen to music while racing (or sailing at all, I guess). BUT, then again, you could ignore all those comments of "COMING UP!!!" or "Starboard!!!!!"
Somehow the race committee wouldn't be happy.
I guess one could really get into a groove single handing in high winds with music.

The music is the sound of the wind and the waves. I like the sound of water all over.
Very tranquil, I sleep a lot on the bigger boats, not much on the cat due to water down the neck when I lay down.

I find that, when racing singlehanded, I either sing or whistle most of the time during a race. It helps me concentrate. I never do it when sailing with a crew - I talk a lot then, keeping my crew up to date.

I thought about taking an old I20 boom, and putting a radio inside it...then it would be a boom box!!!!
Ohhhhh, I kill me.

Late 1980s, Div 10, 16A fleet

The sounds of Jimmy Buffett coming from the boom-box lashed to the mast of Don Fecher's Hobie 16 as the start goes off.

(probably cheeseburger or fins)

I ain't sayin what I wanted. Just sayin what I heard. Could count on it at any regatta that Don Fecher was racing at in the late 80s that had light air.

Contemplating the same thing myself. iPod in a drybag with a Bluetooth connection to the headphones for example.

Anyone know of any waterproof/weatherproof Bluetooth headphones?

Other strategies?

13 July 1985 - 30 mile coastal passage race to commemorate 21 years of cat sailing in Ireland. Also Live Aid Concert. Sailed singlehanded with a transistor radio on the tramp in a plastic bag. Great music - great race.

Re: Music - 02/25/06 11:40 PM

We put together a music system for the T-500 and OBX-500 that worked out really nice. It took a bit of effort for getting the set-up together, but the work was well worth it, especially on the light wind legs.
It consisted of...
-MP3 player with 16 hour battery life and more memory than we could fill with music we wanted to hear
-amplifier canabalized from a pair of portable speakers with battery pack doubled for extra time capacity
-pair of water proof speakers mounted inside the tramp launch spin bag.
The first two parts were stored inside a waterproof tuperwear container with a set of quick connects for the wires. We would bring the box up to the hotel room each night and recharge the mp3 player and change out the batteries to the amp at the same time we did the same for the GPS.
we swore the wind gods liked it!
We pull the system out any time we are distance racing and if there is a light wind bouys race going on.
and no, there was not much, if ANY buffet being played!

Hope this helps,
Chris

Yea Sirius is nice but given my ability to kill these radios I have to use something "disposable".

Buffet...I don't get it. Maybe it's because I already live in paradise.

Well I'am a little bit disappointed that nobody mentioned the movie "Sharing the Wind", featuring a OJ-Simpson look-a-like with the big headphones, in the trapeze with a nice bird next to him.

Those were the days.

Am very serously looking at installing a set of waterproof speakers in our front hatch covers and using an I pod....... Had to add 6 kg to the Capricorn to bring it up to weight, so may as well use it.

Anyway, cool list above but must add the Motha to the list. More retro than retro and a band from down the road from my place..... Just finish touring AUS and US, currently begining UK tour and will then be back to the US in late March. Best live act in a long time.

Check them out here and listen to there single Mind's Eye...

You really wanna get pumped? Find Project Wyze, "Nothing's What it Seems." Makes me want to crush things. I'm sure you guys are like me, multitasking with downloads.

Motha w sounds good so far.

Yes, I did make breakbeat electronica while I was in college. (I sucks though, I'll admit it, I only had one really good song)
