Naming your cat

Naming your cat - 04/06/06 08:38 AM

Just out of curiousity, I was wondering if you guys named your cats and if so what names did you choose?

I've been thinking about what to name my new boat (whatever I end up choosing) and I cant seem to decide between "Shaheen" and "Debran" each has thier special meaning.

So what did you name your cat?

Re: Naming your cat - 04/06/06 09:45 AM

You have to tell! What are the special meanings?

I don't name my boats, but there is a totem for them. The sea turtle. I always take a small, blue ceramic turtle on the boat with me. My wife keeps one at home. This is so I can find my way back if I get lost. I have become seriously superstitious about this!

Sea turtles are great voyagers, but return to the beaches where they were born, at least according to folk lore. The females, of course, come ashore to lay eggs, but the males just cruise the beach searching for females!

Once the males go to sea, they never return to land. According to folk lore. Can't vouch for the scientific accuracy.

Shaheen is the arabic name for the fastest and most respected falcon in the Middle east. Its also VERY expensive because they are all pure bred for hundreds of years. I believe a fully trained shaheen could cost up to $200,000. They kill thier prey by thier sheer speed alone. And they are very beautiful falcons.

Debran is the 13th brightest star in the sky named and used by the Arabs in the 12th century. It is 350 times brighter than the sun and was used to help the lost sailors find thier way back.

I have a little torquiose turtle that I carry around with me for superstisious reasons too!! It was a gift from my surfing instructor in Hawaii. All the surfers used to call me "Honu" which means turtle in Hawaiian because I was using the HUGE begginers surfboard and no matter how hard I paddled I was still so slow.

I think my next boat (NACRA ??) will be called "Illusion of Stability"... works for me on so many levels.

Re: Naming your cat - 04/06/06 01:26 PM

You can see my boat's name in my sig. It was named by my crew/fiancee. She always seemed to be able to glue herself to the deck when we were flying a hull (this is before she tried trapping). When I asked how, she explained...

So now, when I paint the boat this coming winter we will put a lemon on it

Re: Naming your cat - 04/06/06 01:28 PM

Mary; My turtle is male, my wifes is female, you can tell because hers has long eyelashes and uses makeup!

Zee; I've spent hours looking for the Hawaiian word for turtle. Honu. Since it is a noun, I assume this is the feminine form. Any idea what the masculine form is?

Sea turtles are only slow on land, I think you should name your boat HONU. You are already a great traveler and you returned home. The name is auspicous in that it was given based on a misperception!

ReefedOne; that wouldn't work for me, I've embraced my madness!!

I name it after my daughter.

The advice in Brasil is never to name it after a wife, girlfriend, etc. They may change eventualyy and then you start hating that name... Siblings are forever, thus safer.

Search this forum for an old, large and interesting thread on cat names.

Re: Naming your cat - 04/06/06 03:05 PM

In Norse mythology, Skíðblaðnir (the name can be anglicized as Skídbladnir) is the ship of Freyr. Whenever the sails were hoisted, a fair wind followed. It could travel over both land and sea. According to the saga, Skíðblaðnir was made by so many parts and with such ingenuity that it could be folded like a cloth and carried in your pocket.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Naming your cat - 04/06/06 03:24 PM

I wouldn't mind having a cat that could also fly, but "Skíðblaðnir" is kind of an awkward name for a boat.

I used to have an old, tired, but still fun Hobie 16 named "Garrett" after my friend's mom.

Sunny: The modern name would be "Skibladner", and there is a old steamer named so: http://www.skibladner.no/

If you are looking for cool boatnames within norse mythology, look no further than "Nagelfari" (translates to "ship made by nagels"). Nagelfari was a ship made by Loki with nails cut from the dead. When the ship was completed, Ragnarok would start and the world end. To slow down the coming of Ragnarok, all nails vere cut short on dead people so Loki could not use them to finish his ship.
In some variations, Hel, godess of death would use the ship to transport the souls of the dead to her domain.

I always name my boats. I think that if you think a boat might have a personality, all of mine have, you would name it.

The boat that we are sailing now is called [color:"purple"]Diamond Girl. As in high maintainence woman. She is a Formula 18 and likes to be paid attention to, as all women do. When I am not sailing on weekends I usually do some maintainence or make improvements to the boat. I put the name on the boat.

Re: Boudicca - 04/06/06 06:15 PM

I hadn't really considered naming my boat until this thread. I am just so happy to be getting one that I didn't think about it. I like Celtic names.

My last name is Annon. It is pronounced so that it rhymes with the name Shannon. Being in the United States it is hard to tell where it came from. I know my family once lived in Ireland but had immigrated there from someplace in the Netherlands (probably) but we are not sure where. It seems Annon in an unusual name in any country. If I knew where my family's homeland was I would look for a name from there.

Thanks for the info Rolf. If I remember correctly I think Loki also built the Skibladner for Freyr as repayment for a debt.
Posted By: Rolf_Nilsen

Re: Boudicca - 04/06/06 06:34 PM

Skiblander was buildt by the sons if Ivalde (dwarfs) on Lokis request, before he gave it to Frøya. Skibladner was just one of the gifts Loki gave the Æsir, others was Thors hammer Mjollnir, Odins ring Draupnir etc. It was not exactly as repayment for a debt, but an attempt to get on the good side of the Æsir after the history where he cut the hair of Siv (Thors wife). Half of the artifacts was made during a bet between Loki and some dwarfs, with his head as the price if he lost (he won).

Would you trust this man

Re: Boat naming - 04/06/06 09:08 PM

My Nacra 5.2 went unnamed for years until I sunk the starboard hull for the second time. While drying out and repairing the hole I decided on "Catastrophe".
The second sinking happened while I was sailing home from the Provincials with a first place trophy on board. So I combined Cat and trophy and the name stuck.

The next boat is going to be a Blade. I am buying it with inheritance money from my great Uncle Bob. What with the Blade being shorter but scrappier I ended up with Bobcat (Which I also used as my screen name.) I went so far as to design myself a T-Shirt.

A bunch of us were out single handing H16s on a lake. One boat went over but, because he was behind everyone else, wasn't noticed at first. When we realized he wasn't there we went back to find him.

By the time we got back he and the boat had drifted into a large, low bushy tree. That night around the campfire his boat was officially named Bushwacker.

My current boat is "Lethal Weapon" after my previous boat (Comfortably Numb) had 2 - 3 confirmed kills in the last few months of ownership. My other boat was called "Catapult" and the next will probably be "Ninja Turtle" but I'll make up my mind when I get it.

A friend just put a new Tiger on the water and has called it "Whacking Day" with a picutre of Homer Simpson looking like a ninja on the side - looks awesome!

If you simply call it "Mr. Honu", you'll get some form of masculinity, or perhaps only gender confusion would result...

Re: Naming your cat - 04/07/06 07:31 PM

My old '79 Hobie-18 was the "Geriatric Blue Hobie", or "GBH". That's because it was a geriatric blue Hobie. People usually added something else to the name when they saw us sneaking up on them. Lots of miles and success with that boat, we liked to mention that our boat was old enough to drink.

My Hobie-20 was "WikiWiki", which is Hawaiian for "Fast". Whimsical and descriptive.

My 6.0 is "Katzenjammer", orginal inspiration from the "Katzenjammer Kids" comic from a "few" years ago about two mischievous kids ("adventures of Hans and Fritz, twins and fellow warriors in the battle against any form of authority"). Each hull can be a mischievous kid... It's German, meaning essentially the wailing of cats. I like that, but also that for me the name evokes cats and windjammers if pronounced in the usual butchering of foreign languages. I waited for the right boat for this name, subsequent boats of merit will be Katzenjammer II and so on.

The F-27 is "Tri-Pawed" because to me it is like a three hulled (legs) catamaran. Three-legged cat became Tri-Pawed in the obvious pun on tripod for a trimaran. This was my wife's contribution. Eventually a logo of a Pirate Terrier with a peg leg will be designed.

Jake, you could go with the intellectual version of your favored name without Bonny knowing by choosing "OILV773" and put an up-side down "F" after the 3 so that everyone will know the name when the boat is tipped over.

I haven't been around sailing so it is new to me. However, as much as the blowing references amuse me, being a chick named 'Wendy' on a boat with such a name would probably attract comments that I just don't want. I will just have to come up with something different.

Re: Favorite cat name - 04/08/06 11:01 AM

Jamie,
Judy's right: don't name a boat "Wet Scream." A Hobie 16 capsized up in Vancouver years ago with two college guys on it. When the boat capsized and immediately turtled, one of the guys was trapped underneath and drowned. The next day when I saw the boat with its mess of tangled rigging sitting on shore, I noticed that the name of the boat was "Wet Screams." The name seemed ironically and horribly prophetic.

I thought about naming mine "My Boyfriend" I all ready love it. I am excited to ride it. It would always be there for me. And if it fell down I would pick it back up. And when I went sailing I could say I am taking 'my boyfriend' out. See...perfect.
Except boats are supposed to be feminine and “My Girlfriend” just doesn’t work for me. Not that there would be anything wrong with that… So, I will just have to keep thinking about it.

I don't think they HAVE to be feminine. I think when they were owned by men they were thought to be feminine but I don't see why the opposite isn't true... Go with it!

Re: Naming your cat - 04/10/06 02:07 PM

Well, my class allows you to pick your own sail number (provided noone else is using it), so I chose "42" and was going to call my boat "Don't Panic". Then I saw some others with that name already and switched to "Mostly Harmless". But then Douglass Adams used that as the title of his last Hitchhiker's Guide book (which was totally lame), so I pretty much left my boat unchristened.

If I get another Isotope, I'll probably go for sail number 235 (after uranuim 235). Then I'd call the boat an "Unstable Isotope". Maybe I could even get a "Smilin' Joe Fission" graphic for it.

My 1974 Hobie 14 had a red, white and blue sail, similar stripes on the hull, and was named Bi-Cat for the Bicentennial. Our 1977 Hobie 16 and 1979 Hobie 18 were both named Tom-Cat for my son, Tom and my initials. (Tom was the skipper on both).

No name on Tom's H-17 as it is the "Stars and Stripes" model. My H-17 is just Hobie 17, as they insisted on having a name on the Annual Multihull Trophy, for the Friday night Anthony's Series.

My A cat gets to hibernate in a barn for almost 6 months of the year. this winter has been particulary cold and people have only just stopped walking on the lake where I usually sail. I ordered a new boat last December and went to fetch it about two weeks ago. After too long a winter and some serious withdrawal symptoms the boat got called "Who let the CATS out?"

I always liked the name Nautilus, mainly because it is a perfect representation of the Divine Proportion (Fibonacci Sequence) and since im an architecture student Im kinda into those things hehehe. It is a proportion of "beauty" found in nature. For example, the proportion found in the nautilus is also found in the human body. As an example the hand and forearm has this proportion, its basically found everywhere in nature and became a guiding factor in classical architecture.

The problem I have with its name is its way too cliche.

Re: Favorite cat name - 04/20/06 12:52 PM

For me the ideal name is

ZEN

No matter what the conditions, the boat you sail should feel like an extension of your arms and legs, just like an essential part of you. You and the craft should feel as one.
The craft you are on should talk in subtle but meaningful ways that tells you what the breese is saying. It is an ongoing conversation between you, your boat, the wind and the water.
It does not matter if it is a "light whispy drifter" or "blowing dogs off chains" it is all the same.

This is how it is for me.

So for me the name is appropriate.

If you don't see sailing in this light then this is probably not an appropriate name or your boat.

Just the way I see it.

Regards,
Phill

But no...my wife had to come up with a name for the 20, inspired by Bernie Taupin via Elton John.

Re: Favorite cat name - 04/21/06 07:16 PM

We were watching the first Harry Potter movie last night on DVD and the part came on where Harry is introduced to the game Quiditch (sp?). Harry asked what the little ball is called and he is told, "The Golden Snitch" because it is
"an elusive little bugger and wickedly fast". My son turns and says, "That would be an awesome name for the boat...."

My other choice is because I have always been a John D. McDonald fan of his Travis McGee series and one of his boats was called Munequita which means "Little Doll" in Spanish. I like that a lot.

Taipan 4.9 - Ragnarok.
Chose the name because of the connotations - it is the predicted end of the world from norse mythology, and is a synonym for chaos. we thought it sorta accurately described what we cause on a race course.

That looks pretty cool! It takes me a while to find a graphical balance...and this one is taking some time. Here's what I'm looking at on the A-cat...since it's an "organism", I thought some eyes would be in order. I tried all sorts of single cell creatures but it just doesn't look right. And who said Spongebob's for kids? That's my favorite show, although I wouldn't encourage my kids to watch it (a little irreverent and pessemistic - who wants kids to be that way?)

Best line from Spongebob "Don't worry Captain, we can buff out those scratches!" (after boat destroyed by backing into rocks)

Like the Hobie 16 that had the name "Wet Screams" on it, and when it capsized and turtled, one of the crew got trapped beneath the boat and drowned.

And I also have a problem with the name "Incorrigible," because we worked on a monohull boat once that had that name and the first owner's wife died of cancer soon after the boat was built. He sold the boat to a second man, and that owner's wife also soon died of cancer.

So call me superstitious.

Here's the link to the South Dakota university student video (at the H20 NAC's) with exerts of "flipper", flipping (3rd time) after "flipper" flipped on the first downwind leg jibe, and then flipped (again) immediately after righting.

"Capsize" just seems so anaesthetic.

There's two other videos in here of the event

Liquid Pleasure? Okay, I give up.

Re: Naming your cat - 06/20/08 04:20 PM

My explanation of the name got deleted on Hobiecat.com so I will not disclose here. It is based on activities I enjoy while under sail. It can only be accomplished in the ocean, preferably offshore. Most exhilarating while flying a hull, although sometimes not as satisfying.

Re: Naming your cat - 06/20/08 04:48 PM

Undecided.

If you've seen the boat, you know why its called that.

Re: Naming your cat - 06/25/08 02:38 AM

my old NACRA 5.8 = WET SPOT
NACRA 5.5 uni = TWO HOT
NACRA 5.7 = wind over water (with the word "wind" looking windblown, and the word water looking like its underwater.

In contrast, my monohull is called "One with the Wind". Once I win a few races on it I'll chaneg it to "Won with the Wind".

Re: Naming your cat - 06/25/08 12:29 PM

The Acat is "Fat Bottom Girl", the hulls are fatter under the water line. Sung to the Queen song...

The CL14 is "Grace" came with that name, its approporiate, dont want to change it.

The IC was called "Smoking Crack" as the hull was cured with a wood stove, prior to me inheriting the hull. I took the power tools to it and made it a DC, so its "Smoking Crack, Chainsaw Massacre."

Re: Naming your cat - 06/25/08 02:39 PM

I didn't name her so I can't take credit for any of this, but my prindle 18-2 is named "ORKAN". On the bow she displays the attached signal flag.

Of course I had to look up the meaning for both... ORKAN is Norwegian for Hurricane. The flag means "You are standing into danger". I'm not norwegian, and I don't own a set of signal flags, but I still like the name and flag on the cat.

Every time I take her out in a good wind, the scorpions start playing through my head...
- It's early morning, the sun comes out
- Last night was shaking, and pretty loud
- My cat is purring, and scratches my skin
- ...
- Here I am! bah dum bum bada, Rock you like a hurricane!

My boat was named boomerang when I bought her. I don't get it and most of the letters have peeled off. I foresee a boat naming ceremony where she is renamed Smurfette. I can't help it. My boat looks like a smurf.

I'm thinking of either "The Other Woman"
or
"Firebolt" accompanied by a nice truefire paint job
or
If I ever could get black sails with a skull and cross bones I might paint my hulls black and call her "The Black Pearl"

I all ready bought a little Flag with a skull and crossbones that says "The beating with continue until morale improves"

Re: Naming your cat - 07/13/08 09:02 PM

The A-Cat is "slippery when wet"
The Tornado was renamed DasBoot when wet@!##$ was complained about just prior to launch day in 1988. What can I say, I was young and dumb when I chose the name. Glad others were not as young and dumb and the name was never painted.

If done right, you can appease Poseidon or your favorite water deitie. Do a search on boat naming/renaming ceremonies and you will find plenty of info.

My Favorite ...

Years ago there was a VERY experienced skipper competing in the "Down the Bay Race" ... who tried to pass under the western approach causeway of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge ... he miss judged the clearence .... there was a loud "BONK" as he hit all four the roadway support beams .... that night a individual/group using red & black permenant markers named his boat .... "CENTER SPAN".

The boat itself isn't the special treat... It's actually named for a certain "thing" my wife and I do at "special times" which is done at fast speeds and can get quite wet. And so I named the boat after that!

The graphics I designed and a local sign shop did them in vinyl and put them on the hulls.

Re: Naming your cat - 07/15/08 01:20 PM

You could play to the committee boat's call as you cross the finish line:

Name the boat "Over"

"Over, Over"

or "Roger... Huh?"

"Over, Roger... Huh?"

(Airplane! The Movie call back).

Re: Naming your cat - 08/22/08 10:35 AM

bit of a late post contribution to this thread but was waiting for a good pic to show the boat under sail

when bought, here on a small lake in mountain japan, my boat was just known as "the nacra"

26 years old, but little used, it looked like it would clean up well, but nothing could be done to improve the uv cracked factory stickers

with a long winter it was easy enough to decided to carefully copy, enlarge and hand paint the makers name and boat type direct to the hull

about then the white tiger's head, that the sailing anarchists came up for the flying tiger, caught my eye and because it was eye catching and could just be a few black blobs of paint on a white hull i decided to paint that on too

with a "face" for the boat it now needed a name to match and with the addition of some sunglasses on the tiger head we decided on "cool cat". easy to read, understand and pronounce in a non-english speaking country

mucking around on the computer things seemed to look best if they were as big as possible, so it was decided to put big tigers heads on the bow, move the factory stuff to the stern and the fill up in between with the name

masking and painting strait lines is too much work so fonts were searched until "chiller" was found on ms word

still looking for good ideas from other boats we flogged the red lettering on the mast from the f18 capricorn

very happy with the result, makes the 4 year old hobie 16 on the same beach look old fashioned:o)

Here we go...put up a picture of you sailing and you better get ready to get...well...reviewed.

Jib's too tight and it's clearly stalling the mainsail. This usually happens before the leading edge of the main caves in but you're clearly in full on choke the main mode there.

Re: Naming your cat - 08/22/08 09:18 PM

ooohhh,,,

penny drops, thought dennis was ragging on the age/condition of the sails not their trim

yes, now i see that jib is hauled in way to tight and directing air INTO the main and not around it

in fact it looks like the only thing stopping the luff of the main from full collapse is the battens

must keep and eye on that

thanks for the call

Re: Naming your cat - 08/24/08 05:27 PM

Sooo, apparently it's bad luck to rename a boat?

What happens if you take two boats and make them into one? Do you end up with a boat that has two names?

What happens if you replace the hulls on your boat?

What if you keep your hulls and replace everything else?
Posted By: DennisMe

Re: Naming your cat - 08/25/08 07:12 AM

Erice, my message was quite ambiguous. Probably because I wasn't 100% sure what was wrong there myself.
Jake seems to have had little doubt though!
Sorry for the Hyjack everyone!

(personally I don't think renaming is bad at all, if Poseidon disagrees I'll take him on any day!)

bad luck to rename a boat? - YES, bad mojo
two boats and make them into one? - Add a hyphen
replace the hulls on your boat? - check to see if your life insurance is in order
hulls and replace everything else - drink 2 bottles of rum, spin around 24 times counterclockwise and sacrifice a chicken.. you should be fine
