TBCSI Race Against Hunger

On the front page of the Tampa Tribune Metro section Sunday, April 23, 2006 there was a large article about the TBCSI, Tampa Bay Catamaran Sailors Inc., and Morning Star Fisherman’s two day catamaran regatta conducted at the Dunedin Causeway on Saturday and Sunday April 22-23, 2006. “Will Sail For Food” is the heading of the article which includes photos of the boats. Some people race against time. “Off Dunedin Causeway this weekend, catamaran sailors are racing against hunger”. Morning Star Fisherman fights world hunger by teaching fish farming to impoverished villagers in Central America and the Caribbean.

The regatta was a great success which not only raised money for the cause but provided two days of great sailing. Saturday was the high wind day for the distance phase of the regatta. The wind started at 15 mph grew to solid 20 mph with gusts recorded at 30 mph at the end of the day. The small boats went around Honeymoon Island around some marks on the north side of the causeway and back. That was almost 30 miles in 1 hr 48 minutes for Rey’s boat. The big boats went up around Three Rooker Bar. “Surprisingly, local Tornado Class Olympic hopeful Robbie Daniel cursed next to last among the larger boats, having been passed by Hobie F-18s. Daniel found himself treading water after his craft flipped while attempting to round a channel marker in St. Joseph Sound.” That was not his only flip on the new F-16 G-Cat and he was not the only one to go over on the high wind day. Olli Jason and Kelly Jason on the Hobie F-18 corrected out first the first day with Tom Hirst doing it on the SC 15 2 for the small boats. For the Jason’s that was 40 miles in 2 hrs. 22min.

Sunday started out with light winds but built to a nice 10 mph as the three races were conducted around the cans out in the Gulf of Mexico on smooth waters. John Fondrk ran a great race sequence with John Hoopes helping on one of the chase boats.

Not all the boats came back for the Sunday race so they missed the best sailing. Overall Great trophies went to all. For the big boats Olli Jason/Kelly Jason F-18 first, Mike Grisko/Keren Grisko F-18 second, Robbie Daniel GCat F-16 third, Jennifer Lindsay/Doug Barthel F-18 fourth, Steeve Greer M5.5 fifth.

The small boat winner was Rey Johnson/Kito Johnson G5.7 first, Tom Hirst SC152 second, Brad Dunson/Dennis Bedgood TheMightyHobie18 third, Bill Bartlett Bob Barton SC17 fourth, Dave Parker M5.0XL fifth, Burt Sherry G-Cat 5.7 sixth, Jane Mayers/tom Andersen seventh. Full results should be up soon at the http://www.tampabaycatsailors.com/ site.

Judy Fondrk and L.J. conducted a great regatta event along with Hans and Sigrid Geissler who started and run the Morning Star Fishermen foundation. Hans is also mister G-Cat for those who don’t know.

Great for the fight against World Hunger. About $890 donations and regatta money went to the Morning Star Fishermen foundation.

Not only do fundraising regattas benefit worthwhile causes, they also tend to get a lot more publicity in the media for sailing.
