Read the legend at the bottom right of the forum. It says that to the left of each thread topic there is an icon that is yellow when there are new posts and white if not.

Hi Mary,

(Don't you ever sleep?)

I've got yellow folders on two threads in the general forum, but there are no new posts??

Even tried viewing them using the ALL link, and then going back to index but they stay yellow.........

BTW none of the instant UBB code works either, so you can't include an image or a quote or a URL or.........

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 01:07 PM

You guys in other parts of the world have a several-hour head start on us at seeing this new forum in action, so please let us know any other problems you see.

I'm sure we will get the smilies fixed so they work.

I'm not sure what that little flame icon means, but it appears that it means this is a "hot" topic because it has over X number of views. I don't really see any reason for that; do you? Maybe that should be disabled.

Also, note that this forum upgrade has restored a feature that was lost during the last upgrade: Now your reply will again include the name of the user you are replying to. Therefore, now it is important to do your reply directly to the post you are specifically replying to. That will also help to keep the threads more orderly for people who read in threaded mode, as well as more understandable for those who read in flat mode (which I think is most people).

I know Mary, I do alot of checking before I report an error and I saw the legend. However all the post, both new and old, had a white folder icon in front of it.

I just logged on and now ONLY in this thread I see that new posts have a yellow folder in front of it. Maybe the administrator has just corrected this feature because it really wasn't this way in the morning (Europe) ?

And as John Alani writes. None of the scripting works. So no search functionality and you can't ask for the display of all the post of the last 25 hours for example, no UBB codes. It just shows this message as a response :

It's a pretty neat trick to be viewing the forum and at the same time be told that you're not there...
If I try Who's Online I see only me, checking who's online.

But at the same time I'm told on the forum that there are 6 registered and 2 anonymous users online <confused>

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 02:46 PM

I found out that if you use the UBB code that shows up over a Graemlin and type that into your post you get the corresponding Graemlin. Not ideal but it's a workaround:

<img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> etc.

I assume therefore that by using the usual place markers we can enhance our posts?

Well, it will probably be a while before you get your smilies back. Rick is down at the hospital standing in line to get a blood test. And Chad probably isn't up yet this morning. Some of the smilies you can do manually, for now, using the key-in codes attached to them.

Meanwhile, I am most concerned about whether people are able to access the forum at all right now.

This whole thing is like getting new running rigging on your boat and trying to get used to the changes and working out the bugs. I'm sure it will take a few days. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Any way to get the unread function to appear on the Main Index? Was convenient to look there at my favorite forums for new posts/threads. Is this feature still available and I need to activate?

If not, I'm not complaining, you had me spoiled, speed outweighs convenience.

The pit is my little girl named Chloe. She is as friendly as the picture looks.

I found where the flame icon is listed in the admin section. It is currently set to display if there are more than 20 replies or 100 views. This can be set globally and Rick need to know what to set this too. I am sure some input from everyone would help. When would you like to see the hot topic icon show up? How many replies and how many views?

I like the flame icon! Note that once the forum gets completely "birthed" it will only show up on a few posts in the list - not all of them like it does now.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 03:07 PM

I have not found a way to completely disable it, unless we make it only display if there are 10000000 replies or 100000000 views. Most threads will not show up then. However, it you look at the current threads and look at the number of replies and views on them, we can determine what should be marked as a hot topic. Maybe it should be 10000+ views and 30 replies? This is why I am asking for some suggestions.

I will look into the search engine shortly.

Jake, so what do you think in terms of how many views and how many replies before the flame icon shows up? I still don't understand the reason for it. I just find it annoying. You can easily see how many views and how many replies, and I would rather see the original icon with the original post. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 03:34 PM

Looks like 'hot' topics get in excess of 30-40 replies.

I'd have thought that a better way of measuring whether something was particularly popular was >x replies in 24 hrs or something along those lines?
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 03:38 PM

The way it is set is on the total number or replies and views. If you want it disabled, we can increase the number to a very high number so that no thread will ever be marked as a hot topic.
Posted By: Robi

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 03:38 PM

I like the quick reply option, this is sweet!

Anyway on my forums we have hot topics that have over 200 views and over 30 replies. Maybe here you can set it to over 50 replies and over 300 views. This forum does have quite some traffic.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 03:41 PM

Hmmm, guess it is just what it says, for quick exchanges back and forth. In the subject line it automatically puts in the name of the person who posted right before you.

So, you don't use this if you are responding to somebody else farther up the thread. Right? In that case you would click on "Reply" in the specific post and user you are answering.

I'm still not sure what it is or does. Somebody else please figure it out for me.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 03:58 PM

It does what it says on the tin......

Looks like it allows you to reply to the last post in the thread.

You get all your text in place and then add your smilies, links or attachments.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 04:04 PM

I have modified the hot topic so the flame image will only show up when a thread has 200+ views or 30+ replies.

Also, keep in mind that we can change the image it is using. If you want something more appropriate for the site, our suggestions are appreciated.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 04:12 PM

You also want to specify that the image must be a gif within a specific resolution. We dont want wierd huge jpgs of beachcats. LOL

Mary, the quick reply is here to avoid you having to click to open the reply page. The quick reply also does not have all the quirks of the forum. For instance the smilies, tags, etc etc all teh BB Code stuff.

Its usefull for the 1337 /\/3rD5 that know their codes. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Posted By: Mary

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 04:47 PM

Nope, the quick reply does NOT reply to the last person who posted. Guess the forum is too fast now. I was replying right after my own post, and it still gave me as the replyee, even though three other people posted in between my two posts. But that's GOOD. It knows who I INTENDED to reply to.
Posted By: Robi

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/11/06 04:55 PM

Mary the thing is, if you take a long time to reply and others are replying at the same time, that will happen.

It will reply to the last person who replied into the thread, not the last person you have on your screen. What you see and what is going on are two separate things.

I still don't see any reason for the flame thing in the first place with a web site of this type, but it will be up to Rick whether we eliminate that feature or not (by upping the numbers to astronomical). And it will be up to Rick if we continue to use this feature but adopt some other icon (hopefully one that doesn't include motion). <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

My vote goes against eliminating it.

I think it just needs to be a different icon which doesn't stand out as much.

Also, I have the search working now. You can search back 1 year. The longer back you search, the more load it places on the system and the longer you searches will take.

I think the 30-40 number sounds pretty good. I mean, I read most every post but there have been times most recently where I have to scan for some especially interesting stuff and skip the others just to save some time. As the volume on this forum continues to grow (which it has considerably in the last 6 months) it will be nice to have something like the flame indicate that the topic is very active. There will probably be a time (probably soon) where it will be difficult to read every post (without getting fired at work!).

I would like to vote for entlarging the search time frame.

Currently it is 1 year and that is too short.

Maybe we can have it default at 1 year but still allow longer time frames.

I personally use the search function alot to do fact checking. Also thread dealing with trim, spi sailing are often out side of the year timeframe.

I also miss the "or" / "and" option in the keyword search. With the new search engine you can much less fine tune your search parameters.

All,

Agree with Wouter that 1 year is not enough.

As for searching, use + to include a term, and - to exclude.

so if you want to find posts that mention 'spi' but not 'sheet' put this in the search box +spi -sheet

If you want 'or' searching, just use spi sheet and this will return anything with either spi or sheet, if you want ONLY "spi sheet" use "spi sheet"

You can build these up, but UBB does eventually get confused!

Thanks for the info on how to do a search. I will see if Rick can add that to the FAQ or put it in a sticky at the top. And you right, one year is definitely not a long enough search frame. I used to like it when I could click on "All posts" which went back to the beginning of time.

Also, I really like the Calendar feature. I am going to be using that a lot to help keep myself organized -- I hope. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I really appreciate the FAST screens on this new setup. Instantaneous in most cases!

HOWEVER, there is still one s-l-o-w step. If you want to change to a different forum and you hit "Main Index" at the top it takes 10-15 seconds to arrive. If you "Jump" at the bottom it's better but still slow at times. Is there a faster way or can this be sped up?

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/12/06 07:01 PM

I changed the search setting to allow you to go back 5 years. Keep in mind that when a search is done that goes back that far, it will take up more system resources and can slow things down while the search is in progress for everyone. If this becomes a problem, we may need to shorten the search length again.

As for logging in each time, I have not tried it, but there is a checkbox at the login screen to remember you when you come back. If this is not working, please post it here and I will take a look at it.

Question: It seems as though if I do a search from our Google search engine on the home page, with it on the default for catsailor, it brings up everything throughout the forums (and our whole website) instantaneously. So wouldn't that be a better way to do a search without slowing down the whole forum for everybody?

Can you fix it where we don't have to login everytime we go to the site? It won't remember me.

It remember me fine every time I return to the site, over multiple machines. I suppose they use cookies for this, so perhaps you need to do something at your end?

Check your cookie setting on your firewall. This may be the problem

Thanks for the info on how to do a search. I will see if Rick can add that to the FAQ or put it in a sticky at the top.

No problem.

It's all in the UBB guide somewhere (Yes, I have read it) and you can do other things too !

I'm in the process off setting up a site using vBulltin and it's so much better than UBB, and cheraper too !

Might be worth considering next time you have to pay an upgrade.

I'm also (probably) going to be involved in a mass migration from UBB to vB so if you are interested I can let you know how it goes.

The read numbers that show unread threads does not show up anymore?

As I said the little red numbers are no longer there. You have to login every time, it doesn't remember you. Also the dates are off. It already shows the 16th.

It seems like a cookie thing. Do you have a privacy/antispyware type program installed that may be blocking all cookies?
I have to say that the unread post counter seems broken. It tends to point me at posts that I have already read.
BTW
When you emailed me a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that your system clock was off by about a week.

Edit:

Hey you are right. This post was made tomorrow!

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/15/06 11:40 PM

It appears to be some kind of problem with the forum clock. The most "current" post "was" made at 12:29 a.m. tomorrow. And others were made later this evening. Very interesting. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Chad is working on it.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/16/06 07:58 AM

The problem appears to be fixed. As I had hoped, once we caught up to the future and into the present again, the posts started bringing the threads up to the top again.

Now my only problem is that all mine show in Central time instead of Eastern time. Is that just me, or is everybody not showing the posts in their local times? I don't know how it worked before the upgrade, but I assumed everybody was seeing all the posts with their local times, wherever they were in the world.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/16/06 08:12 AM

Mary,

You have to set your local time as an offset from the forum time.

If you scroll right to the bottom of the Main Index page, on the bottom left is a box of Extra Information. At the bottom of that is a Current Adjusted Date link which tells you what your current setting is. All you need to do is note how far out it is then click the link which takes you to your personal display preferences page. Change the time offset according to the amount of offset you require, hit Submit and your time is adjusted. (It's easy to adjust 'the wrong way') Simple!....NOT <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/16/06 08:13 AM

Doug,
Now that the time is back in synch, the yellow folder light goes out and the red numbers indicating new posts goes out after you have opened the thread with new posts.

As before, after you have read a particular thread, in order to make the lights go out, you have to go up to the top of that thread and click on "Index," in that bar that says "Previous," "Index," "Next," etc. When you click on "Index," it takes you back to the list of posts in that particular forum, and you should see the lights out on the post you just read.

P.S. However, if you want to leave the "lights" on so you can find it to go back and read it again later, just hit your normal "Back" button (instead of that "Index" button) and it will take you back to the forum thread list without eliminating your "lights."

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/16/06 08:31 AM

Thank you, John! I have re-set my time to add an hour to the "forum time," since I am one hour later. It never even occurred to me that I had to do that as a result of the forum software upgrade.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/16/06 12:14 PM

I'm having the opposite problem with the unread posts indication. Many people have said the red numbers won't go away, but I'm not getting any in the first place. The threads used to be highlighted a darker grey background when there were unread posts as well but this isn't happening either. I'm logged in and I have cookies allowed.
I can see no indication of new posts at all now. Very inconvenient <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Time error - 05/16/06 12:46 PM

System clock is still off, not just by offset (whole hours). The time error might explain why the "Edit" function won't work.

Time can be checked at the bottom of the Main Index page (which still takes 15-40 seconds to load!)

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 05/16/06 01:17 PM

Tim,
I think your problem may be the same as what we had here, with things being somehow posted in the future. It has gotten back to normal here, but maybe it will take longer for yours to catch up so that things start getting posted normally again.

And be sure to adjust your time setting for the forum, as Jalani explained in this thread. I don't know how many hours you are behind or ahead of the U.S. "Central Time" -- I think you are ahead of us; aren't you? At least I know Australia celebrates New Year's before we do. So, you would have to add a bunch of hours to the forum clock. Once your clock is on your local time, instead of U.S. Central Time, maybe everything else will work right? I hope. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

David,

there is no doubt that the forum is much, much quicker since the upgrade. The Main Index page load time for me is near instant (as are all the forum pages). Are you sure that the delay is not at your end?

Re: Time to load..... - 05/16/06 10:41 PM

If your numbers and lights are not coming on, then it is NOT working great for you. Rick has the same problem on his computer that you are having, but everything works fine on my computer.

So what causes the difference? It must be some adjustment that has to be made within certain computers.

Rick's clock is set properly to synchronize with the forum server clock, same as mine.

Oh, well, somebody will come up with the answer to this mystery. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

John, Thanks for telling me that you get the Main Index quickly. It certainly does mean it's at my end and not Rick's. I cannot imagine how only this one page-jump can be slow when all others are so fast.

And I want to take a second to applaud Rick and Mary's investment and efforts to make this forum blazing fast (except for my own private slowdown). Thanks! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Regarding the highlighted folders for new and unread posts and the red numbers in parentheses for number of new posts:

We have four computers in our office, and I have checked them all again this morning. Mine is the ONLY one that works for the referenced functions on the forums. They work fine on a friend's computer just down the street.

So what causes the difference?

Re: Time to load..... - 05/17/06 12:57 PM

OK, here's something peculiar:

My computers (3 of them - 2 at home one in the office) all work as I'd expect; red numbers for new posts, yellow folders on the left etc. BUT one of them, my laptop, shows numbers of new posts with red numbers in the indexes and clears them once read, EXCEPT for the F18 forum!!! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

It doesn't matter how many times I read the posts in the F18 forum, when I go back to the Main Index there are 2 unread posts showing for the F18s. I finally had to go to My Home and select Mark All Posts Read to clear them. Then someone posted a new post in the F18s and the problem is back!!! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I notice that in the My Home section you can reset the cookies for the site, I'm going to try that next.....

[color:"red"] EDIT: Since expiring the cookies and logging in again all seems to be working perfectly. Unfortunately no-one has yet posted to the F18 forum so that I can check whether that particular problem is solved (at least for me personally).

Mary, it might be worthwhile expiring the cookies on one of the other misbehaving computers (while logged in) then logging in again and see if it sorts that computer out? [/color]

The new system works great, and thank you very, very much.

I'm experiencing the same thing with the new posts not clearing for the F18 forum, even after repeated readings and exiting through the "index".

In regards to the issue where the number of unread messages and the folder colors are not working, the following is from a support request I submitted to UBB.threads.

https://www.infopop.com/q/q.php?a=vt&ticket=1147923434-R9GG7

They are aware of the issue and trying to find out what is going on. Maybe we can help provide some more info for them to work with. Please post here your OS, browser version and if you are having problems with the unread message totals and unread message folder colors.

Unfortunaltely, the numbers and the folder/light bulb color problem is a known bug and a fix is being worked on.

Re: Have same problems on Mac OS10 - 06/03/06 02:11 PM

VERY strange. Rick and I have the same kind of computers and we both have Windows XP, and we are on the same network and in the same room, and yet the light bulbs and red numbers work for me and don't work for him (they work for him occasionally).

However, it does not even work for me the same way it used to. Now, when I leave the internet and then come back to it, all the lights are no longer on for the messages on the forum that I did not read before I left the last time. VERY annoying. The NEW ones are lit up since AFTER I left the internet, but the old ones I did not read are NOT lit up. So I have no way of knowing what I read and what I didn't.

I am told that the reason UBB had to "upgrade" is because they had to change all the script for a new type of format or something. But if that is the case, why couldn't they just change the scripts for the older forum instead of adding features and deleting features and changing things? It was fine the way it was. Aargh! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Mary,

The forum ALWAYS acted that way for me. After being away for an extended period and I didn't have a chance to read all the new posts the evening I got home (or whatever), I used to leave my computer on overnight with the browser open so it wouldn't forget the ones that I hadn't read.

Yep, I still have the same %^#$@ as Doug reports. I for one am not happy with the upgrade; I only lost functionality and the search engine does find nearly as well as the old one.

I'm now getting quite handy with remembering the dates of post I have already read. Also I seperately open the threads I suspect have a new post and find that the orde of them is rearranged most of the time.

The customary reply is :"Well, yes that is a known bug" as if that solves anything.

Also there seems to be more spamming going on then before.

I always say :"if it ain't broke don't fix it" and the old forum wasn't broke as far as I know.

Lets downgrade !

Chaps,

The old forum software was broken. It had a massive security hole in it that allowed others to host web pages on this and other sites (I do not know if this site was effected) - Upgrading was a must do.

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 06/07/06 01:22 PM

You remember the discussion we had about the yellow folder icons? I'm on a different laptop and I can't see them either...however, I am quite sure that it's more of a contrast / display problem with this individual screen...the difference between the white and the yellow isn't very significant and doesn't display on some screens. I bet if the "yellow" folder graphic were changed to be more orangish that this problem would go away.

Sorry, it can't be done. Believe me, I am the biggest complainer. We did not want to "upgrade" in the first place.

But the forum was getting slower and slower, so we had to do something. I am told we had to go to a new database and a new server computer, and the older forum was not compatible for some reason.

Actually, I did not even like the forum we were using as well as the version that preceded it. Everybody was upset with that "upgrade," too, but we all finally got used to it.

In the case of this version, there is obviously a problem with it, and I hope they can fix it soon.

Programs like that are constantly being "upgraded," because that is how they are able to keep selling new software. The problem is that once they have the product perfect, there is nowhere to go but down, with change for the sake of change. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Mary;

THe reason for the upgrade was a hassive security hole in UBB; I assume someone was sent the announcement from UBB about it. The hole allowed the server to be hacked. Not good !

I made a post about this earlier

Re: As a result of the upgrade I lost .... - 06/09/06 12:16 PM

TRUST me. The upgrade was worth it. I'm struggling about every month with www.naf18.com because of security vulnerabilities (the entire site is run from software similar to this forum). We get hacked / attacked by viruses about once a month and I have to restore from backup. However, with the level of customization I did, I can't afford the time to do an upgrade - it would take me in excess of 200 hours to get things back to normal....I'm stuck. The upgrade here was definitely worth it because being "slow" was certainly only the tip of the iceberg of problems for the old one.

Oh and BTW, the NAF18 website backup is being restored as we speak - the website should be back up this afternoon. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

It could actually be some idiot actually going around registering and posting it. Rick may be able to confirm via the IP.

Rick, In one of the releases UBB allows you to switch on a "confirm" step in the registration where by when someone (or a bot) joins, they have to respond by clicking a URL in an email sent to the registering email address before they can post. Might be worth doing this. I am not sure which release it is, but I'm sure it must be in 3.6.n !

Is a robot able to fill out a form and register itself with a name and a password so it is able to post something? That would be scary. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Actually Mary, it doesn't "fill out the form". Rather it communicates directly with the page that has the programming for the form. Since this forum software is widely popular, it's easy for people to write programs that seek out these sites and communicate with the software that's actually running the site.
