Just saw the video - everyone is fine. I was incorrect above and corrected my posts - it was a pitchpole on both accounts and was Hilfiger and Volvo (not Motorola - although they too came very close). They said that the boats actually righted quite easily.

I have never been able to see any video of that V40 page. Apparently 4 nations in the world have been excluded from seeing those due to sponsoor obligations. Whatever !

But I'm truly interested to know how they right these boats. Can you tell ?

Jake,
The shot from behind was a beauty.
What a buzz !!!!
You mentioned the boat was righted easily.
Any more details on how it was righted.

Regards,
Phill

It looks like they used a power boat to pull it up in the photos on the Volvo site.

They didn't actually show it in the video...but Smyth commented something to the effect was that the boats were easily righted and the only real damage was to their egos. In one shot on the photos, it looks like they had a smallish RIB pulling the boats from the side.

If I might, I would like to entitle this one "I GOT NOTHIN'!"...this is my catch phrase for times like this - when the rudders become elevators, when we have no wind yet I'm getting passed, when the tiller extension blows behind the boat, when the leward rudder pops up from yet another jellyfish, or when my beer is empty.

Did you all notice that he moved up a slot in the event standings even with the wipeout?

Gotta love that.

What, no trapezing? What a bunch of candyasses - that was totally recoverable. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I remember Krantz, after getting a ride on one when they were in the states, said how painfully slow the hydraulic release was on the mainsheet.

Here is a link to the video: http://www.volvoextreme40.org/mediax.asp...mp;mRef=newsart

It looks like they can't cut the mainsheet loose for some reason. It also looks like they didn't get the jib cut loose. It looks like all they cut loose was the traveller and the Gennaker. I'm guessing that it is a design flaw as they both did the same thing.

I'm glad nobody was hurt. It would be really easy falling into something and hurting yourself bad. I'd consider wearing a helmet myself on that boat.

Pretty good trick staying on the top slippery hull. I noticed how Smyth had the pole position after the crash on the daggerboard. He always seems to come out on top.

I'll be able to find out for sure next time I speak to Will, but I spotted a power boat towing one sideways (a la old unsealed mast Tornado righting technique) on the video I think...

Symthe had this beast ripping before he went over.

Right on the edge. Wow. That short sequence on the video is impressive. I wonder how fast they were going.

I'm surprised all 5 guys werent huddled on the aft windward beam. The seemed to be spread out along the windward hull.

Anybody notice the guy on Volvo sliding down the shroud instead of falling the 20 ft into the sail? Interesting way to get off a hull that high in the air.

That was pretty slick. I guess it beats a putting a hole in the sail!!!

Well, here's the initial righting attempt, the team looking for the righting line.

This is a more pragmatic approach.

I wish people would check in Rick's store. I'm sure he sells a righting pole for that boat. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Although not Volvo VX40 related, I just saw this sequence over at SA (click here)
Isnt there anyone able to release the halyard or something? Seems to take ages for it to fully capsize...

There are some serious design flaws in those catamarans.
