US SAILING Youth Multihull Championships Results - 07/19/06 05:47 PM

Sarah & Lizzy Newberry set a new standard for youth sailors at Miami Yacht Club this past week. See attached results for complete info. These two girls sailed exceptionally well and become the first ever all ladies team to win this regatta.

Sarah is just coming back from France with a 3rd place finish under her belt at the SL16 Gold Cup, wins this event and now is going up to New Jersey for the Hobie Nationals. Look out guys, this lady is some kind of fantastic sailor. What great fun.............

Jason Bilow and Eric Raybon qualified as second place finishers for the US SAILING team and will represent us in Kingston, Ontario next year at the ISAF Youth Worlds. ( Sarah is over 18 this year and can not attend the ISAF youth worlds)

Luke Lawrence and Alex Sachs were third. Luke certainly seemed to be having a good time in Miami. When I asked him if he was planning on coming out next year he was all smiles and said "YES"

We need more events kids can attend. Remember, they don't have money, transportation or boats. Any regatta for kids has to be set up specifically so they can sail or it won't work. We also need more clinics. The new SL16 was introduced at this event and all agreed this is one fast boat which is designed for children. If you are interested in putting on a clinic next year, contact me.

Congratulations to Sarah and Elizabeth. Also congrats to Eric Raybon and Jason Bilow who qualify for the youth worlds next year in Canada.
These kids must be having a great summer. Both teams will also be at the Hobie 16 Youth North Americans this weekend in Sandy Hook. Best of luck and have fun out there.

Art,

There were 7 (or more) SL16's at this event in Miami? I didn't think there were any SL16's in the US yet.

Hi Les:
I guess I wasn't very clear about the SL16. The regatta was sailed on 7 Hobie 16's with new sails and one back up boat which Jamie Livingston rounded up for the event from local sailors.

I introduced the SL16 at the regatta as the boat we will sail on next year for the youth championship. Performance Catamaran sent a boat to us in Miami so kids could sail on it. Mike Siau and Sarah Newberry, who have sailed as a team on one in France took anyone out that wanted to get a ride.

We have that one SL16 someplace in America right now on a truck going to SoCal. Performance has the mold and will be producing this one design boat in the near future. So, I plan to offer kids sailing opportunities this summer in my local area. Any kids out there in SoCal can contact me....
