Hobie 21 formula - 09/06/06 07:52 PM

Anyone heard of the Hobie 21 formula?
It is supposed to be an old, but at the time (early 90s) extremely fast cat with a carbon mast and "the whole package". Supposedly only made a hand ful of them, as they were too expensive for the Average Joe. Devoloped and produced by Hobie France. If anyone has any information and pics let me know!

cheers

The only Hobie 21 I can find is the sports cruiser.
See http://www.fastlanesailing.com/hobie21.html
But Hobie 21 does not by todays standards classify as "extremely fast cat wit a carbon mast and the whole package".
Could it be a prototype of the Hobie FOX (F20)?

There was the 21 SE that was used for some competitive (televised?) racing circuit. It was basically a scaled up H17 with wings and a jib and I think a spinnaker. Although I do not think it came with a carbon stick.

They are rare these days.

Hi dad!
It is not the Hobie 21 "sports" cruiser I'm thinking of.
Come to think of it, I think only the hulls were carbon, the rig is alloy I think. I googled the hobie 21 SE and it is not the boat I was thinking of as the H 21 formula has a scaled down cross beam between its bows to maintain stiffness (N6.0 style). Check out the Texel ratings, the Hobie 21 formula has the same rating as the M20! There has to be someone who has heard of this beast!?

Re: Hobie 21 formula - 09/10/06 08:57 PM

the hobie 21 formula was made by hobie cat europe. i had spec sheets with pics, dont know if i still do. it weighed less than our standard 21, hulls were kevlar, used dagerboards instead of centerboards and had no wings. i looked into buying one but with the exchange rate and shipping the coast was too high.

So I guess you have seen it sailing? Is it really as fast as the Texel rating indicates?

Would have been great if anyone had any specs on the boat!

Yes, I have seen it sailing. I think it is fast, but not as fast as the TR (92) indicates.

Re: Hobie 21 formula - 09/10/06 11:54 PM

That looks like a 21 SE, which is not what the 21 formula apparently is.

That custom spinnaker system needs a shorter halyard :P

Probably you are right, I'm really not sure.

Based on the last picture we should open a new "how not sail a cat" topic...

I have a magazine article of the old 'Pro Sail' Hobie 21 racing somewhere. Will see if I can find it and scan.

H21 with wings, 2 x Trap and Spinnaker launched from a tramp bag.

Hei Rolf!

T_A: Great pictures! Those kites looks like a handful, and not really fast either.

The Stockholm dealer has sold one of the last produced Hobie 21 Formula. The first (and so far only) owner specified it with bolt-on wings and a Hobie Bob at the top of the mast. When new I took one picture of it, which can be seen on the following (second picture from the top):
