Can anyone give me a reason why the self tacker track has to be able to swivel up and down?

It lets the legs run in tension (or as close as practical if they aren't all aligned perfectly) which is what they are designed to do. It minimizes the chance of failure due to a force being applied in some funny direction. Same thing holds true for the car as well.

Allows you to play with sheeting angles to cater for opening / closing the slot and different mast rakes without loading up the track at an angle that may cause stuctural problems.

Thanks, that was kind of what I thought but wasn't sure.
