F18 and I20

F18 and I20 - 07/27/03 05:00 PM

I read a comment in the F18HT forum over at http://www.f18htclass.com/ that although there has been strong growth in the F18 class in the midwest, it has largely been at the expense of the I20. I'm curious to know from those of you sailing F18 whether you think this is true, and if it is, what do you think the factors are that are attracting sailors from the I20 to the F18.

In Michigan, most of the F-18 sailors came from other fleets than I-20. Off the top of my head, of 15 new F-18 owners we have 3 former I-20 owners. Some of those may have gone to I-20 if F-18 did not exist, but most came from other fleets.

I sail an Inter-18-It is my opion that the reason that many people are saiing F-18 is that the boats have less sail area. So, for smaller crews the boat is easier to handle over all. The I-20 has taken the place of the Nacra 6.0 in distance racing. With this said I think that most people sail moderate distance races and buoys mostly. Now that everyone has jumped on the bandwagon its turned into a large and growing class to which I'm happy t be apart of.
