Re: Let's go sailing - 01/14/02 06:36 AM

Awesome day on the bay today. I saw five cats out today.

Geoff, lets make a run for the sandbar this Saturday. I will show you the pass between the reefs. It is easy going out to the bar but more difficult on the return because of the sun and wind. Hope you can get your tramp stitched by then.

I busted the cam cleat assembly where the stainless cable attaches for the jib block. A quick trip to the hardware store and $1.25 later and I will be back in business for Saturday.

I will not be able to join on the 20th. I have volunteered to help in the hotel Alawai paddle challenge. I will be tied up until noon or so. What time will you be going?

Chris & Ryan, Are you ready to race on Feb. 9th?
Do you need crew?
We usually have a start time @ noon. KYC starts us after the Cal 20's so we have someone to pass! yee, ha!
The standard start goes like this:
2.5 minutes to go peel off from outside committee boat outside of line and come up to the line on starboard with @ 1 minute to go, jockey around for your spot until @ 30 seconds, then start to drop down onto a closehauled course and sheet in!

And how might one go about registering?
Did you go sailing today? I'd say the wind is up to about 18-20, just about what we get for racing all year.

I didn't go sailing today. It was like a hurricane on and off today townside. I don't think the wife would have gone for it.

Is Feb 9th a definate race day? If so, I will start a thread on Regattas so we can plan our events. CL

Margaret and I are looking forward to returning in Nov 5 for a couple of weeks. Can't wait to get back on Kaneohe Bay. Caleb Tarleton- Seattle

Not sure if any one will be traveling to FLA. And yes it sure is quiet on this BB. Not sure why our friends dont use it more. Take a look at this link to see some hull flying in Hawaii.

Hey Ryan, Just wondering, How was the full moon Leonid Meteor Shower paddle to the sandbar? Too bad I had to work the next morning. Although, a call a bit earlier in the evening and I might have been persuaded to join you guys.

I hope to be out on the bay this weekend. Any other member heading out Sat or sun?

Hi Chris: Margaret and I spent the last two weeks in Honolulu. Ventured over to the cat beach a couple of times. Did visit with the NACRA 5.5 with wings owner. Hope he found a tiller extension, he was going out with a makeshift line system.

We did have a nice sail on the Maita'i Catamaran off Waikiki. One of the skippers is Ian Marshack. We have known Ian since he was about 10. He is a member of the Marshack Family Hobie racing team, from Oregon. Ian has been in the Islands for about five years. He also crew's on a 30ft Cat doing inter island races.

Suggest any visitors be sure to go out on the Maita'i. It is the large cat with dark hulls and green sails. Website is www.leahi.com They have the best ride and most experience.

Re: Let's go sailing - 12/12/02 02:13 AM

Caleb,

Another sailing option that I have found when visiting my in-laws is to go out with a guy named Chris Pliska. He sails an Prindle 18-2 and you can sign up to go out with him at the local beach shop that is call Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks. It is about $100 for 2 hours, so not cheap, but I much prefer it to going out on a large boat. And he is happy to let you skipper once he is comfortable that you know how to sail.

We are planning our offshore run to Kahana Bay this weekend (4-19-03). Everyone will depart form Kokokahi early and have a BBQ at Kahana Bay. Then we will sail back to Kokokahi. Ryan is coordinating the event. I sure hope the wind dies down a bit. I don't really like 15-30K outside. Could be a bit of a challenge getting in and out of Kahana with that much wind.

If you are planning on attending please add a post here.

Re: Let's go sailing - 04/20/03 06:03 PM

Well as I expected the winds were 15-30 with pretty big rollers coming in from the open ocean. About 8 cats turned out for the run. We sailed down the inside of the sandbar and headed out into the ocean by China man's hat. Oh yea, there were rollers breaking as the boats headed out. I understand one did turn over but righted OK and continued out. I, along with a Hobie Getaway, did not plan on the run all the way to Kahana bay so we ventured out a bit than turned back to remain inside.

On the way out my boat was caught by a cresting wave on the nose which came really close to turning us over backwards. That would have been a nasty place to turtle since the depth was most probably less than the mast height.

When I get a report from Ryan on the outside run I will add it on here. CL
