Collision - 11/13/06 11:11 AM

Well, I feel pretty embarrassed to tell this story, but it’s bound to happen, and I have a question regarding it. We had a ‘Hobie Open’ day here promoting the sport. Get some newbie’s on the water. Went really well, got lucky with the weather. But, in order to sail offshore here, you have to navigate out a reef. So, with two boats heading out, lovely wind, both skippers (well I was and I assume the other too) going through the drills to maximize the session, we smacked right into each other on opposite tacks! Great I was on starboard (but I’m not concerned about that) and we T-boned (with him on port). Beside who was in the right (it happened) I’m concerned about the boats. My port hull shows a small chip right through the gel coat and under part (4mm-0.2inch). Thought I’d sand it down, deep, to clean out and patch with epoxy? My big question is, although all else looks ok, what should I really check? I’m concerned that this may be a case of, this is ok, but your pylons are now stuffed. Just want some opinions if that’s ok? In case I should check other parts…

Thanks

Where along the rail is the damage?

Forward of the front crossbar is the worst case and most concern. Aft is likely not a big problem. If the rail has not fractured more than the snall chip you mentioned, likely not a big deal. Nothing is going to happen to the pylons in a small collision. You would have to see a lot mor glass damage to the rail. Pylons are very tough.

Hi Matt,
It's on the water line on the port hull front. I'm probably being over cautious, but rather that than not check up on it:)

Thanks

Delamination from the impact would be my biggest concern. The inner layer of glass could be fractured, but I doubt it is a big deal. Sheet the sails in and out hard while on the beach while looking at the bow and outer panel. Likely you will see distortions appear if there is structural damage.
