hobie 16 hull numbers - 06/30/08 08:31 AM

a tale of 2 hobbies

what differences would i expect to find between a new hobie 16, CCMB8713G304...........2004? comptip mast

and an old hobie 16, CCMP1338M80F..........1980? pre-comptip mast

i can see that the rudder gudgeon mounts are different and i see from previous posts that the traveller, comptip mast and weights may be different, maybe reefing points on the older boat and a different main hoist hook?

anything else???

Changes since 1980:
Rake adjustable rudder castings
Better rudders (providing the newer one does not have plastic rudders)
H-20 Style tiller connectors
Better sails (not just age difference - they're made better)
Integrated traveller tracks front / rear
Beefed up main traveller
Jib traveller / cleats that actually work
Low-profile mainsheet system
One-piece cast gudgeons
Lighter (320 vs 340 lbs)
Integrated jib traveller turning blocks (in corner casting)
Euro-style rifled corner castings (keeps boat stiffer longer)
Comptip (no reef points, halyard hook is the same)
Longer forestay / shorter shrouds (more mast rake)
Trampoline is heat welded, not sewn
Plastic coated standing rigging
Jib is cut for more mast rake (shorter on foot, longer on luff)
No boom vang attachment (not used anyway)

That's all I can think of right now.

Single bale on boom for use with 6:1 main block system
Adjustable jib luff?

Matt: When did the boom vang attachment go away? Are there any class restrictions on its use?

The tang went away in the early 80's. My '84 had a recessed fitting. My '89 and every one since has not had a vang attachment.

Here's the rule on the vang (this applies to all Hobies):
Quote
16.1 A single boom vang may be added. It may be
attached to the base of the mast and/or be
movable from side to side on the front crossbar
for use as a preventer. Vangs shall not travel on
tracks or wires, which can be fastened to both
sides of the boat simultaneously. The maximum
purchase shall not exceed 3:1.

Thanks, Matt. I now remember that I have two booms. My boat's original mylar sails must be on the tangless boom. Don't use those sails much. My newer dacron sails are on a tanged boom. That boom must have come from an old ('80s) set of dacron sails that I bought about 15 years ago.
