Motor Mounts - 11/10/02 03:58 AM

Has anyone made their own electric motor mount? I've seen posts on gas engine mounts but nothing on electric.
Has anyone purchased the one i've seen in the Hobie Catalog? I was wondering how it attaches to the boat? I know this is extra weight but last summer was my first experience with a hobie sail boat (or any sail boat). To many times I when out to try and sail without any wind.

HI

Well i have seen the hobie motor mount and well i didn't like it too much because when you are sailing in heavy winds the boat wants to nose dive and well i dont think you want to get that area wet. If you are going to get onemake sure the engin is mounted as far back as possible.

I have the Hobie electric motor mount, which is actually not made by Hobie but by a guy in Montana. I've had mine for a couple of years now and have never had a problem with nose diving due to this system. It has worked great for me! You can see it at http://www.sail-s.com/main/cart-s/h16TRAPSEAT/trapse.htm in the H16 section of the site. This is the only system I know of even though I know some have tried a rear mount system unsuccessfully.

You say having an electric motor mounted on the front may not cause it to dive but can it take the constant splashing. Are electric motors water tight?

I am not say it does not make it nose dive I am just saying I have not noticed it. The motor I use is from Manncota (sorry can't remember how to spell the company name) and is their salt-water model. I get this type of motor simply because it is suppose to be water tight, even though I do believe the fresh water motors are also water tight. So no problem with my motor and battery getting wet so far. Make sure the battery is a marine battery.
