max load for a hobie 16

Hi all,

I'm planning to buy either a used Hobie 16 or 18 soon and have a question about the capacity of the Hobie 16. I'm married with 4 kids and wondered if we could all fit on the Hobie 16 just to limp to an island, where we could sail out in pairs. Our combined family weight is around 750 pounds, which I know is out of line for any sort of performance, but is that weight workable at all? Or would our hulls just sink beneath the surface? (By the way, we've been sailing on a Laser Zuma 13' for the past few years, and only in the last year did we finally outgrow it's "limping" capacity!)

I'm a H16 owner and I think you would be WAY better served with a TheMightyHobie18.Try to find an SX or Magnum with wings.safer Bigger and more suited to your needs and I don't think all that more expensive than the H16. Good Luck,Mark

While I wouldn't advise it, I was able to place four adults and a child with a combined weight of about 700lbs on an H16. We moved well in good winds. I would go with the 18 instead.

That much weight would be to much for any boat but to be honest i would almost evebn say the hobie 20. they have heaps of power so it would work better but having more than 3 people makes the job much more difficult. I own a hobie 16 and its about 17years old and i have taken out 6 people out and all up they would weight 360kg. The boat wasn't looking the best but it was still moving!!! An 18 can hold a heap of weight but if your going to sail with only 2 people with kids the 16 is a much better boat to learn in so think about what the boat is going to be used for!!

Thanks! Wow, I had no idea that so many people are interested in SLEEPING on these things!! At any rate, the threat did mention that the official max weight according to Hobie is 800 lbs.
