Transom Trouble

Transom Trouble - 02/16/05 07:59 AM

Hi,
Last weekend I was backing my Hobbie 16 down the boat ramp when my rudder locking device gave way and because the hulls were incorrectly positioned on the trailer the rudders hit the dirt. As I continued down the ramp, one of the transoms was levered out of the hull which ruined a long anticipated weekend of sailing.
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience in this sort of repair.
There appears to be a fairly thin fibreglass template for the rudder gutcheon bolts to line up with ( which is still intact) then a waterproof plywood layer and a black matrix material followed by the fibreglass outer skin. The ply/matrix/ outer skin have been bonded together and I've removed this due to the damage.
If anyone has done this repair I'd really like to know where to start.

Thanks heaps

Wow bro, pictures would help but if I understand correctly, you've torn the entire transom from the hull sides and deck? If that's the case probably you'll have to go ahead and install an inspection port in the deck, then epoxy the transom back on and then through the inspection port lay several layers of glass over the seam to further seal it and give it some strength.

If that's not exactly what you meant then lemme know. And post some pics!

Good luck.

Jim is right, but it is, as you have guessed a lot of work and might be left to a professional unless you are really good at fiberglass work. Or...you might look at picking up a used hull somewhere and just swapping it out. Not sure what year your boat is or whether you race or not, but if you start digging around, its amazing what you can find.
