Rivets for Jib car track?

Rivets for Jib car track? - 09/08/05 05:28 PM

I have an H16 1977 with the stainless jib car tracks. One of the tracks is getting a little loose so I think it is time to re-rivet the track. However, on closer inspection I noticed that the original rivets in the track are very flat and low profile so as to let the jib car pass over freely. Can I use the regular stainless rivets I have from Hobie to do this job? Or, do I need a special low profile rivet I am not aware of? Also, although I have the rivets in my spare parts kit, I am not sure what size to use. I have the rivet part # by Hobie (8010201) but not the size to match with the number. Unfortunately I neglected to label the rivets before I put them in my tool kit...Opinions??

You can order countersunk rivets from Murray's for just that purpose. (Also possibly from the Catsailor store? Dunno.)

Jaime,

-Very helpful as usual. Thanks.

Do you know if I MUST use those countersunk rivets? I already have the rivets identified for this job by the Hobie parts list, but as I said, they don`t seem to be low profile. If I can use the rivets that I already have that would be great. However, I really don`t want to put them in and have to drill them back out. Generally, I have found Hobie to be quite good with their products, so I would be surprised if those rivets are the wrong type...However, they seem to look different.

I sure would like to hear from Matt on this.

The rivets are supposed to be flat head and counter sunk. Otherwise the car will hang up on the heads. Shown in the Hobie Parts list as #8010201 RIVET 3/16 X 3/8" CSK Order from any Hobie dealer.

Heh. It would make sense that Hobie would have them too. Silly me.

Yes, they have to be countersunk otherwise the traveler car is going to hang up on them. Take it from me, a jammed traveler car isn't cool. At Cowtown Cats a few months ago Ming and I were actually in the lead for one whole race (in front of one of the really SERIOUS H16 racers) and we were really kind of in shock that we had stayed ahead of him the whole race. Then on the very last tack back up to the finish line, my traveler car jammed out to windward and while I was wrestling with it he passed us. NOT COOL.

Still; I'd rather be on the lake with a jammed traveler car right now than here in the desert. Oh well; only 6 more weeks to go. *sigh*

Matt,

Thanks for the help. I already have a handful of those specific rivets from my Hobie dealer (at least thats what I thought). I actually ordered a few different types as spares for my toolbox. However, last night I inspected them a little closer along with the part #s on my order form. The part # I specified on the order form is, in fact, correct, but I am fairly certain the incorrect rivet was supplied to me by the dealership - I knew they didn`t look right. Thanks again...back to the dealer for the correct rivets!
