Cover for the Hobie 16

I'm looking at making a cover for my Hobie 16 as I intend leaving it down at our beach site more often. A cover which will provide protection from the sun and sand-blasting. The boat would be left on the trailor over night on occassion with the mast up. Just looking for some advise and tips from anyone who has made one before or got such a cover before I tackle the sewing machine ie. different shapes? velcro? any advise would be appreciated.

so do you want to make one that will go around the mast? cuz if thats the case then you need to make sure you have holes for everything like rigging, traps, bridles, mast and mybe even the forestay, sounds like one hell of a project to me, good luck

I purchased the kind of cover you are looking for from the Hobie catalog/dealer. I believe it was around $180 U.S and I am very happy with it. I understand from talking with you in the past that Hobie stuff can be a lot more expensive down there. But, if you can get that price (or close to it) I think it might be worth it for you when you factor in materials - plus all the work you will have to do on a nice cover. The Hobie cover comes with bungees, tie-downs, velcro strips and instructions showing how to easily modify it for shrouds that are left in place.

I leave my boat on the beach all summer. I cover the tramp to avoid excessive sun damage and also because birds sit on the mast and poop on it all day. I use a basic silver tarp (8x10 I think) with corner grommets bungee'd to the hull pylons. Not sure why anyone would need to cover the hulls but to each his own.

The point behind covering the hulls is to slow down UV damage and oxidation. Both of these are big enemies to gelcoat. A boat kept out of the sun when not in use will look better, require less waxing, and ultimately last longer.

Thanks for the replies from everyone. I doubt I'll be able to order one (still a student). So I'll have a good look at the boat this weekend and see what I could do. Been sowing sailing bags for my harnesses and equipment, so might wing it and see what happens.
