Goolwa to Meningie Sailing Classic - 10/17/06 03:45 AM

On Saturday, am, the 18th November 2006 the” Goolwa to Meningie Sailing Classic” starts from Goolwa at the bottom of the Murray river in South Australia, and is raced upstream on the river to Lake Alexandrina, across lake Alexandrina to the entrance into Lake Albert (the “narrows”), through the narrows then across Lake Albert to finish at Meningie at the south eastern end of the lake.
This is not a race for the “faint hearted”, it’s a long way (approx’ 70 plus kms), and there are a lot of “traps for the unwary”, but all in all it is a REAL CLASSIC that truly does “separate the boys from the men”. It is said of this race that just to be a finisher carries bragging rights for a whole sailing lifetime. Open to ALL cats, as well as the heartiest of mono-maran sailers.

This is one real gutsy race. When the sea breeze kicks in across lake Albert you really know if you're a "real" sailor, or whether you only "think" you are.
By the way, if any Mozzies want to "back" themselves against "first over the line" in this race against the F14's I would be open to a little side "prize money" placed on the F14. Could add a little friendly "spice" to the event?

Only 9 days left to nominate for this "classic" race. Miss it and it will be your loss.

Goolwa to Meningie sounds like a interesting race. Maybe next year.
Now I am going to show my ignorance and ask what is a F14?
apart from the "F14 Hornet" that flies at mac 2

The F14 is a formula catamaran that fits within a “box” rule, the basics of which are, max’ length (4.3m therefore formula 14), a max’ beam, a maximum working sail are, a maximum spinnaker area, and a minimum weight. They are light, powerful, sailed one up on trapeze, and are very fast. Their current Victorian Yardstick is 77, which places them right up the transoms of the F16 around a racecourse.
