Victorian State Titles 2007 - 01/28/07 09:20 AM

Just in case people haven't thought about the state titles yet here is a link to Somers Y.C. <a href="ttp://www.somersyc.org.au/" target="_blank">ttp://www.somersyc.org.au/</a> for the location of the upcoming state titles which are only 6 weeks away. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

A link to the notice of race is here http://home.vicnet.net.au/~mosquito/states2007.htm

We hope to have a full contingent of 12 Mozzies from Somers <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> and would like to hear from others intending to participate.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

great to hear so many locals will be sailing. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

If there are any boats left over give me a yell. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Gary,

I'll keep my ear to the ground but there is high interest within the club from other cat sailors who intend to take any spare Mozzies. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> If the status changes for any reason I'll let you know.

I've booked a tent site at Somers Holiday Village, can boats be stored at the club?

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 01/31/07 06:14 AM

I'd better get on to booking some accommodation, as I'm planning to go to the state titles. Not sure whether I'll be sailing Mk1 or Mk2 as yet.

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 01/31/07 09:28 AM

Col,

Boats can be stored in the boat yard for the duration of the event. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Trailer storage might be a different proposition <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> but there is storage outside the boat yard in the main carpark amongst the trees. It may pay to either lock the trailer coffin/s or take any valuables with you.

Darryn,

Oops! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> I meant to put your name rather than Col. Sorry. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
By the way, it's a long way to come from Adelaide for the Victorian titles. Bloody good effort. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Hi Darryn,

if you are going I am even keener to attend. Just have to find a spare boat, will you be racing the boat you had at the Nats?

There must be a spare boat out there some where <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />.

Gary,

I started distributing the entry forms around Somers Y.C.
The ladies and the newest enty are a bit hesitant at this stage. There may be some hope yet. I'll continue to keep scouting.

Ben and Will,

Great to hear that you are coming all the way from Sydney for the state titles. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Look forward to seeing you guys at Somers. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

It should be a great event. More like a nationals than a state titles with 3 states represented. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

Hi Ben

I thought you already had a boat! Careful or you can end up with a back yard full of boats (I speak from experience).

Are you going to double-deck the two Mozzies down to Somers?

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 02/22/07 09:38 PM

Hi Peter

Maybe there is something to be said here........holding nationals outside of the xmas / new year period. I for one will never be able to attend a nationals whilst they are held Dec / Jan!

Hi Tim

We are doubling the boats down there.
We are both hoping to sell all boats before next season so we can get ourselves a newer fiberglass boat.

Just dont think building a new mossie out of marine ply will keep up with the glass boats so Ive decided to can building one.

Ben and Will,

The boat yard will be open on the Friday afternoon so you can set up. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

If we end up running out of space for trailers a couple of the Somers Mozzie sailors (me included) have offered to store trailers at their houses.

Hi All,

I have booked the camping site at Somers, and am now looking on-line for a tent and some beach rollers...

I had a half arsed attempt at making some rollers - but they bent on the third use!!! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

See you all there.

Trevor,

Great news. Look forward to seeing you at Somers. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Don't worry too much about beach rollers. I'm sure we will have enough to share them around a bit.

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 02/28/07 11:29 AM

Hi all,

don't mean to put a damper on things but you will have to survive with out me. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />. Nobody wanted to lend me the worlds fastest Mossie, so I am not coming <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />.

Will be going for a blast from the past instead, I use to sail Fireballs and they are having states at Paynesville, so unlike some classes <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />, they are lending me a boat. I will crew and Ben will skipper, so maybe he will get his own back after crewing for me on the Mossie <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />. This could be ugly <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />.

Good luck all, hope you enjoy it as much as I will <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

Regards Gary. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 02/28/07 10:24 PM

Thats a shame Gary. I was having an idle thought the other day about hull shapes and I remembered I used to swap rigs on boats, eg 16foot skiff rig on a cherub, that sort of stuff. Altered would be an ideal test platform to fit a Mozzy rig to and with you racing it against other Mozzies we could get some good data, ever been tempted to try it?

Trevor im building some rollers.
Ill post some photos when Ive finished & how mutch it cost.

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/01/07 08:52 AM

Hi Darryn,

"Altered" has been called a Mutant Mossie but that would be ridiculous. It would probably be slower than a Mossie as hulls are heavier, would be awesome though in 20 kts. plus upwind as all that width would make it very easy to handle. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Have allways wondered more the other way, putting my rig on Mossie Hulls <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />, that would be interesting, would probably have to make platform wider though. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/01/07 10:57 AM

Ben, its the wheels that I am having the trouble with. I cant find any that have a large enough axle to hold the weight so far away from the hub centre.

I was trying to put the wheels under the tramp rather than on the outside to minimise the total length (width) of the rollers for transport.
Posted By: mattaipan

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/01/07 07:34 PM

Hi Trevor

The wheels Ive got to build rollers are about (guessing) 250mm in diameter and about 150mm wide, you can get them from disposal stores and engineering supply stores, they have a hard plastic rim, and metal bearing arrangement, if you knock out/punch out the bearing, this leaves about a 50mm hole with the slight taper in the middle, file the taper down flat, so a piece of 50mm aluminium tube can be pushed through, a couple of sleeves each side to hold the wheel in the one place and attach the cradles, most of these type (that I have seen) have wheels on the inside, but I've seen one with them on the outside.

PS the cheapest Ive seen the same wheels as I have is $40 at a market.

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/02/07 10:55 AM

Hey there Trevor
we are using the extra wide wheel borrow plastic wheel.
The axle will be 48mm alloy we are using pvc bushes.
Prob make a fiber glass hull support with the wheels inside the hulls.
getting the wheels for about $80
I will post a photo as soon as its finished prob wed.

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/06/07 12:12 PM

Just a quick reminder to all those attending the state titles, if you haven't put your entry in yet you can do so on Saturday morning at the yacht club. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Registration is between 8:00 and 10:00 am. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If you intend to do so don't forget your AYF membership number and your insurance policy number. I'd hate for anyone to forget these important details or anything else like rudders, mainsheets, trapeze harnesses, life jackets, hats, tents etc. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/08/07 09:29 PM

I think I might get there about 6 to 7pm, depending on Melbourne traffic. Forecast looks interesting.
Saturday
East to northeasterly wind to about 10 knots tending northerly at 10 to 15 knots
during the morning then locally reaching 20 knots in the afternoon. A southwest
to southerly change at 20 to 25 knots during the evening. Waves around half a
metre, rising to 1 to 1.5 metres later in the day.

Sunday
Southwesterly winds mainly 20 to 25 knots but locally reaching 30 knots, tending
more southerly during the day then easing to 15 to 20 knots towards evening.
Waves 1 to 2 metres.

Monday
South to southeasterly winds mainly 15 to 20 knots. Waves averaging 1 metre.

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/13/07 07:54 AM

Hi all,

Liked to say what an awesum time I had down at somers.
Thanks to everyone for putting on an excellent regatta and for making Ben and myself very welcomed(made us feel like regulars). One last thanks to everyone who gave us a hand in setting up the boats and giving us a few pointers on how to get the boat working well (my boat felt real nice on the third race).
Talked to my wife and it looks like its all systems go in getting a newer boat so hopefully you might see us again at the nats and state titles.

Cheers

Will and Ben,

Great to see you at the state titles. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

The full report is listed on the VMCA website
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~mosquito/

Your vast improvement between race 1 and 2 gave me quite a shock. You should really be able to mix it up with the other cats a Kurnell from now on. Just imagine what you can do with new Mozzies.

Hope you can come back this way next year for the nationals and trust that the trailer held together all the way home.

Peter

Hi everyone,

Had an excellent weekend, and even very nearly didnt come last in some races! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> I have some video and far off blurry pictures from the weekend so I will try to get something up soon.

A big positive has come from breaking my rudders on Sunday - I now have permission to get some shiny new 'glass jobbies... Mmmm Boyer rudders... as Homer would say <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/15/07 09:56 AM

Trevor,

Sorry I just didn't get a chance to have a good look at "Another Toy".

With all the activity on the water, on the beach, around the yard and in the Yacht club I just found it too hard to get a good look around for good ideas. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

That's why we need a training weekend like the one last September at Hazelwood. That way we can think up all sorts of new ideas and toss them around. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Will,

I expect that the results will be on the VMCA website soon.
I have a paper copy of the overall result scores that I got from the Yacht Club. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> I believe that all the details with race times should be posted soon.

As for photos, maybe someone from Somers has some good images. I'll check it out this weekend.

Re: Victorian State Titles 2007 - 03/15/07 10:30 AM

Thanks Peter,
Got my boat stripped with new rudder stocks getting made, daggerboards get shrunk, skinner and lighter, light glass on the decks for a little bit more strenght and a new coat of paint.
Hopefully next time we race together we can have a few decent races.
You going to sauna sail this year, Confirmed my holidays so I might stay down for a little bit longer, Will be good to get some tips on rigging for the new boat, might even go sloop rig some time.

It was a great weekends racing, the large, competitive fleet provided some very close but friendly racing which highlighted a couple of areas which I need to work on, a valuable experience, I am looking forward to the next time we all race.

Thanks to the the Victorian Mosquito Assiociation for organising a great event and the Somers Yacht Club for running it.

Pete,

Yes there are races on both Saturday and Sunday. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> The Saturday race is a normal club race which starts at 2:30 pm. Lunch can be ordered from the kitchen as usual.

Jeremy and Brian are only separated by a couple of points for the championship series and this race may be crucial to the outcome.

Hope to see you at Somers.

Peter
