Pre-season Mosquito gathering at Hazelwood

Posted By: Tim_Mozzie

Pre-season Mosquito gathering at Hazelwood - 08/21/08 12:18 PM

Two years ago we held this pre-season event and it was a big success. Some Mozzies have asked that we do it again, so here it is!. We'll be getting together at Hazelwood Pondage on the weekend of the 6th and 7th September.

If the weather forecast does not look promising it will be re-scheduled to the weekend of the 20th and 21st September (check the Mosquito Forum right here during the lead-up to find out if this is the case).

The program will be roughly as follows:
 • Saturday - Rigging and tuning talk combined with on water activities
 • Saturday evening - Dinner in Morwell or Churchill
 • Camp overnight in our usuall spot near the LVYC clubhouse
 • Sunday - More talk, and LVYC winter race

Hey Tim,

I think Fathers day is on the 7th. Also GLYC Winter Series Race?

Re: Pre-season Mosquito gathering at Hazelwood - 08/26/08 10:39 AM

Well the alternative is to make it the 20/21 switching to 27/28 in the event of bad weather.

I was willing to miss the winter race at GLYC but I didn't know the 7th was Fathers day as well that would probably affect a few people.

I have no problem with shifting the date.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

I am no good on either day - 7th is Fathers day, and from the 19th I am in Perth for the week.

I think I am good any other time though!

Ok I think we will make it the 20/21 Sept switching to 27/28 Sept in the event of bad weather.

I've updated the VMCA home page. Let's hope for some nice sunshine and breeze.

I am planning to bring 1655 Lemon Peel along for the weekend as I am sure that I would benefit from some tuning. I am hoping that the first weekend goes ahead as I cannot make the alternate date.

Looking at the Seabreeze Website Sunday looks pretty good. There are a few who can't make next weekend so I think we should go ahead with it this weekend.

I'm planning to get there Saturday around lunchtime, and at least get the boat rigged. That way I will have all of Sunday to enjoy on the lake. On Sunday afternoon LVYC will be running a race.

Who else is coming along?

Re: Pre-season Mosquito gathering at Hazelwood - 09/19/08 12:39 PM

Sorry guys, but the boss wants me in at work on Sunday so I think I will sail Saturday at Sugarloaf. The wind charts from the sugarloaf website show 14-18 knots which will be a handfull for me but at least the distance to travel home is less if I decide not to sail. Hope you get some mossies at Hazelwood (it's awful quiet on this forum).

Re: Pre-season Mosquito gathering at Hazelwood - 09/22/08 12:23 AM

Well it was a perfect day on the pondage. The LVYC winter race began in trapezing conditions, sunshine and flat water. You couldn't ask for better sailing conditions.

Will and I spent the morning setting up his new boat "Slipstream", which he will be racing at Westernport this year. There's now a fleet of 3 Mozzies at Westernport.

Anyway, where were the rest of you? The season is almost upon us!

Hi Tim,

Would have come but I'm still working on my repair. The internal work is all done but I haven't put the deck on yet and didn't want to rush it. I've still got a fair list of things to do. The down side of a pre-loved boat I s'pose is that once you get it up on blocks, there's always something else that needs attention and never enough time .

I think I made it to the cat classic last year before the first breakage. Hopefully my efforts will get me a little further into the season this year.

I'm looking foward to my 2nd season on a Mozzie and "catching up" with everyone. (yes! pun intended)

Cheers

Re: Pre-season Mosquito gathering at Hazelwood - 09/22/08 12:32 PM

Saturday was great at Sugarloaf. The wind was 10-20 knots and I spent lots of time on the wire. Thanks to the comments I have read on this forum over the last year or two I was able to adjust my rig on the water to get good boat speed without being too overpowered. As most of the fleet sailed the wrong coarse (baa baa), I came away with my first win (I think my last race win was over 20 years ago!!!).

Well done Peter!

I think the sailing season just ambushed me this year. It's here and I'm not ready.

I allowed the 8-9/11/08 for Cat champs and found it was on the weekend before.

Looks like the first possible time I can get to a regatta might be the spinaker states (even though I haven't got a spinnaker) on 15-16/11/08. Hope everyone is enjoying the season thus far. Hope to see you all on the water soon.

Re: Pre-season Mosquito gathering at Hazelwood - 09/24/08 01:57 PM

No problem not having a spinnaker Col. I hope many non-spinnaker boats will be along to the spinnaker states - it will probably be the last chance for many to have a decent practice before the Nationals.
