Wanted - Decent Mosquito Catamaran (Race Ready) on Trailer - 02/07/12 12:59 PM

Hi Guys,

Been off sailing for about 10 years (used to sail at Chelsea) and looking into getting a catamaran to start sailing / racing again in Victoria. I am looking at both Mosquitos and Cobras, as I am hoping to get a catamaran which has a decent fleet for racing (I hear there are a few mossies racing in Altona?), that I can sail 2 up occasionally (boat will almost always be raced 1 up).

My budget isn't huge (no more that $3500). What kind of boat would I be looking at for that price? I was hoping to get something relatively competitive on a trailer - am I dreaming?

If anyone knows of any decent boats which would fit my budget, please let me know. I would also be interested in hearing which Victorian clubs are currently racing these boats, send me an email at ASchnull@gmail.com.

Thanks heaps.

Hi, have a look at the Mossie website. There are a couple for sale at the moment.

Hi Nick,

I'm actually thinking about having a look at 'Assassin'. Whilst the boat looks like it is in very good condition, I am a little concerned about the weight (68kg hulls). Do many boats make the 55kg minimum weight, or is it common for boats to be > 10kgs over like this one?

It doesn't concern me too much that the boat wont be competitive (fairly old Dacron main), though I was hoping to find something that I could 'upgrade' with new sails to race with eventually. Is the weight of the hulls as big of a factor in the performance of these boats as I think it is? Would the fact that I am relatively light (75kgs) counteract this weight?

Thanks for your comments.

So I will be picking up Assassin on Sunday and hoping to take it out for a sail at Sugarloaf in the afternoon (picking it up from Ocean grove so will hopefully get there early enough).
Thanks to Rob and Nic for helping me out with advice, can't wait to get back in the water!

Hi Schnoogie,

Welcome to the swarm. smile Hope you have heaps of enjoyment from your new Mozzie. cool

For the Mozzie register would you please send me details of Assasin; Sail number, which club you will race from and any other details like where it came from etc.

I don't have it on the register so it could have been renamed.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Boat is sail number 1363, will be racing at Sugarloaf. I am picking it up from Ocean Grove, I think it was sailed in Barwon Heads.
