mosquito best combination of parts - 11/02/12 10:35 PM

hello all
a question of best hull shape , sail brand , rudder , centre board type , mast and rigging
i plan on building a new boat or good second hand in glass or a timber cheap boat
as i am on the gold coast there is not many boats to look at so the more info the better especially on brand and where to get these parts
does a hull shape suit a sail brand or can you mix up any combo
do you get a sail made to suit your sailing area and boat weight
thanks for your time and info

The Russel Denholm mould, sometimes referred to as "Fay" is regarded as the best within the rules and what all new composite boats have been produced from for a fair while. Phillip Warren-Smith is who you contact for more info on buying a new boat (link on mozzi wbsite)
Irwin is widely regarded as the best & most common brand for mainsails & spinnakers, while Goodall is used by top competitors as well (it's a more powerful sail)
As far as foils go there is alot of personal preferences but basically there is a trend for more high aspect foils with tapered trailing edges. (most are older generation A class stuff)
Mast is available from the association and is slightly softer and lighter than alot of the older boats.

That's fairly brief so feel free to ask more

Again, Irwin is the most common sail on the water in Victoria, as its the one cut and measures right, Goodall sails, is more custom if you know what you are doing! the mast you can from Phillip (website)and I Matt can make up the spreaders, spanner, top hook, boom cars, gooseneck ect.
You can get a whole spin kit from me as well.

HI Brett,

dispite the Vics bias opinions there are more than the two (Irwin and Goodall) sailmakers making mossie gear. Over here in SA Alegayter Sails (the only sail maker that actually sails the class) and Clifton are making sails aswell as Ashby in Vic. I also make tramps and other sundries at Alegayter sails.

as other have mentioned alot of things like masts and beams are available from the association.
The rudders and contre boards im using are from JK Fibreglass in bendigo who also makes the new "Fay" hulls.

thanks for all the info the responce has been great for someone looking to get into this class
the question i have , can you have a timber boat that still goes well in compertition or would timber only suit club racing
do the fay hulls make a large differance to hull speed , stiffer ,and more volume
if fay boat is faster how can you or could you inprove the timber boast speed
thanks brett

Re: mosquito best combination of parts - 11/08/12 04:39 PM

-Trying to answer as best I can-
Just to clarify the fay hulls are the absolute largest(fullest/most buoyant) that can fit in the mosquito template on every measurement as well as having alot more rocker than all shapes that came before it. They can be pushed a bit harder downwind and because they sit "on top of the water" they tack a fair bit better.
Basically if you follow multihull design for the last 40 years you will see a trend from very skinny sleek hulls that "cut" the water extremely efficiently-to "fuller" hulls with more buoyancy that can cope with alot more powerful rigs and hence go quicker in a broader range of wind ranges.
the majority of wooden boats have some age on them and were built to a different mindset, it's not that they couldn't get the "fay shape" it's that they chose not to. there are a few wooden boat builders on this forum who know more, but if you have the skills and the will then making a competitive wooden boat is very possible.

having said all that a Fay boat WILL NOT just sail past you, far from it. we're talking tenths of a knot if that and the best sailor will ALWAYS win, 4 out of the top ten boats at last nationals were not Fay. You have to be very very good for the boat to be the difference, I'm just trying to properly inform

i like to add that a timber home built boat from S.A did come 8th overall in the last nationals at southend. as mitch said, the best sailor will ALWAYS win.

Hi Guys.
Just reading the above info,so although the 1990's Boyer hull is no doubt outdated buy the current shape, as a home build would you consider this to still be reasonbly compettive in the right hands if well sailed?
Cheers

yes they are quite compettive, if sail right, look at recent nats, mitch on 1747 and nic on 1749,

Damo,

there is info around about adding volume in Boyer Tornados basically they were popping the decks off, forcing shape into the bows with extra frames then putting a new deck on. I can't find the info online (its there somewhere), but if you're nice to them the Somers boys might get Griffo to dig them up for them.

Thanks Chris
The patterns that came with the mould seem full in the bow and certanly wont fit while the hull skin is in the mould so before I finalise the bulkheads and deck the hulls I was going to check them in the tempalates before I go any further as wasn't a 100% sure, but after your comments this makes sence but I will check first. Thanks for the info.
Cheers

Re: mosquito best combination of parts - 02/19/13 10:33 PM

By the time I got my shi t sorted the Mossie fleet at my local club was on the fall while the Taipans were on the rise (why sail in a fleet of 4 on a good day, when you can be in a fleet of 5 on a bad day). So I bought an old wooden Taipan and spent the winter sanding and fixing.

Painsville nationals were a lot of fun, but having only sailed the boat in 8 races before the event all but 1 of which was in less than 7 knots I was always going to be at the back of the fleet.

G'day can you guys recommend a place to get new beams and tramp tracks?

Re: mosquito best combination of parts - 02/22/13 07:22 AM

Hi Jeff,

I get them from my local alumimium supplier/fabricator. Track is what they use for caravans etc. He has to order in the beam section though. I believe S.A. assoc has beam section also.
