Spinnakers

Spinnakers - 06/22/13 04:39 AM

Hi all,
This might seem like a ridiculous question, but just for interest sake, is there a minimum size limit on spinakers, understanding they must be assymetrical etc. Just interested to know.
Thanks
Harry

If you are out there Gary, at Sauna Sail you were explaining on your spinnaker you included some bungy in the set up, so that when you put it away it also took the slack out of the spin sheets to unclutter the deck. I have just ordered a spinnaker and was curious as to whether you could explain it again please.

Hi Luke,

I was hoping we had a photo of it on the spinnaker rigging page but no such luck (if you have a photo Tim please post it).

I will try to explain but as allways a picture is worth a thousand words. So you tie about .5m of shockcord to the clew of spin and on the other end tie a plastic ring (or anything similar that will not attack the spinnaker) you then pass the return cord through this before putting it through the return cord patches.

When hoisted the return cord should be long enough to not stretch the shockcord, but not have any slack.

The idea is that it pulls the clew towards the return patches which go in the chute first, this means the sheets get pulled deeper in to the chute, taking up the slack on the tramp (if you have centre boom sheeting) or most of the slack for others. Just stops ropes and blocks from hanging in the water more than they have to. As I allways say, it's important to have everything sorted when one up, as nobody to go and tidy up while you are on trap, like a crew boat.

Excellent, thanks Gary. All understood. Just some light shock cord?
I get tangled up at the best of time. Helped another guy buy Peter Foulsoms old mozzie today so another boat on the water. Spinnaker on order. Got a fiberglass pole from Peter also and just have to wait 10 weeks for Matt to finally make a chute, and then make another in the right colour.
Then I just have learn how to use it.

Gary or Luke, do you know anyone that might happen to have an old kite hanging around? Not putting one on just yet but want to start collecting bits and pieces so I have everything when I'm ready. I've already spoken to matt about chute mouth etc.

Not off mind. They are still pretty new and expensive so no 'second generation' ones yet. Gary might know someone.

Rang around a bit today and new ones are around $900.. I haven't found anything yet either

Due to their lightness and the material, I reckon you would want a pretty good second hand one too, or it wouldn't work right. Might be worth building the rest of it and biting the bullet when you are ready to use it.

Hi Luke,

tell Matt not to cut the holes for the bridle so big. At the Sauna Sail I ended up with the spinnaker getting stuck in the cut out at the side when raising the spinnaker at one stage.

Hey Matt, don't cut the holes for the bridle so big. I don't want my spinnaker getting stuck in the cut out at any stage. Bloody queenslanders aye
