Karl,
The forum is for 17' single-handed cats, I'm sure that there will be a touch of F104 talk also.

Re: Welcome Nacra F17 Sailors! - 07/06/08 07:56 PM

What does the "F" stand for in the Nacra F17 name? I would assume that it means "Formula," but there is no Formula 17 Class, is there?

It is kind of confusing to me, but maybe that's just me. Or maybe it is anticipated that there is going to be a Formula 17 class and Nacra is on the ground floor trying to get it started?

If it is not "formula," what does the "F" stand for?

Mary, I'd venture to guess that the "F" is simply a marketing gimmick for the neophytes and in actuality has nothing whatsoever to do with Formula racing.

Re: Welcome Nacra F17 Sailors! - 07/10/08 11:37 AM

Actually there is a formula.

Fat boys like me get a bigger shute, thats it. The main stays the same. So we have a little more help downwind, but we get no help upwind. (as a gravitationally challenged individual I gotta say I love it)

It was a marketing ploy. A genius ploy really. Not too many people use the "big boy shute" but just having that as a possiblity seems to have given the class a growth spurt.

So far the bigger shute has not helped me all that much. The other guys in the top of the fleet, Mark, Bill and Bob have nothing to fear from the forumula. Time on the tiller is a bigger advantage than the big boy shute. Most of it is mental. The shute makes the big boys think they are keeping up.

A Hobie Cat is a small catamaran (or two-hulled) sailboat manufactured by the Hobie Cat Company of Oceanside, California, USA. Begun as a manufacturer of surf boards in the late 1950s, Hobie (named after Hobie Alter, the company's founder) began manufacturing catamaran sailboats in the late 1960s and has become the largest manufacturer of small catamarans in the world.

Hi Bob : Congrats on the fine forum ! I do not know the Nacra 17 so I have a few Q for you. Can the boat be righted by a 180 lb solo sailor ? Does it have a jib ? It looks like it has a beautiful spinnaker ! What does the boat weigh ? can I get this info @ performance catamaran site ?
Please advise Bill , Brooklyn NY

Re: Welcome Nacra F17 Sailors! - 12/30/08 01:25 PM

Hi Bill!

Here are a few answers to your questions....

The F17 with the carbon mast can be righted at your weight. The aluminum mast F17 needs a righting bag or pole to accomplish this task (I'm at 175 with alum mast and need some help!). Since we don't weigh the boats at our championships, I'll guess the boat weighs in about 320ish lbs and it is very, very solid. It does come with a jib kit/double trap setup; chat with your local dealer. There are a lot of nice used boats out there!

Thanks for stopping by the site and feel free to start a new F17 thread anytime and we'll do our best to provide you the best answers and information about the boat and how to sail it!

Regards,
Bob wink

I am fairly new to sailing, I purchased a 1983 Supercat17 two years ago. Will this be the best forum for me to monitor, ask questions and gain knowledge about handling this sailboat.

10 days and no response? Friendly lot over here aren't they jungle jim? frown
Trim 18cm (7.1") off your Supercat 17 and come on over to the F16 forum! smile grin

Re: Welcome Nacra F17 Sailors! - 01/16/10 11:23 AM

Jungle jim,

I say ; watch the main catsailor forum and ask your questions there. You are more likely to make contact with (former) supercat 17 sailors there.

Other then that let your eye wander over to the F16 and F17 forums now and then and pick up some specific info related to single handing a beach catamaran.

That seems to be the best approach based on what I know about the forums at catsailor.

Regards,

Wouter

Awesome Leigh, Did you get wings?
This will be my next boat after I learn how to sail with a spin.
I was thinking FX-one, but now they (Nacra Australia) are fitting wings, I'm 99% sold on the Idea.
Bob Curry seems to have all the tricks.
[edit] I've done a copy and paste job for you Leigh [edit]

Re: Welcome Nacra F17 Sailors! - 01/24/10 05:41 AM

Heya Mate,
Not sure where the "wings" came from, i think they are probably an after-market add-on... The class rules are yet to be established here but, (i believe) that to keep things consistent we'll go down the path of doing the same as the U.S.? Perhaps we could all get sponsorship from Libra Fleur and make up our own take on the class here in OZ??? smile
Cheers,
Leroy

Is there any more news on the Morelli and Melvin NACRA 17 here or elsewhere? Its pix are out, and several competed in Olympic trials. Where was this and did any Americans get a chance to compete in it? Its April already.

I am looking for a Hobie 17 mast, any ideas?
Can the composite tip on my old mast (1986 boat) be easily removed? Is so can I cut down a Hobie 18 mast, install my tip, and transfer all the fittings?

If you are still looking, I have a Hobie 17 mast with a broken comp-tip. Located in Greenville South Carolina. Free if you pick it up.
