2009 Round The Island Race - 03/25/09 02:23 PM

All,

The 2009 Round The Island 100 mile distance race is on Jun 27-28 out of the Fort Walton Yacht Club (www.fwyc.org).

Strategery is planning on the event, and I know Andrew and Rick are as well. The new Racing Chair at the club is a fantastic supporter of Multihulls, and this event is high on his priority list.

This is a classic event - multis of all shapes and sizes are going to be there, and while tiring, it's a hell of a challenge, and a great chance for the class to establish a recurring Single-handed One Design distance race in the South. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the race, it starts at the FWYC at the crack of dawn, heads out the Destin Pass and bangs a hard right, running West to Pensacola, where the boats come back up the ICW in sheltered water. In typical weather, the sun clocks right all day, and much of the race is sailed on a reach. In years with very heavy air, the race has been run on the ICW the whole way. Rick has done it for years singlehanding his Hobie, and told me that he was pretty psyched to do it on the new F17 this year.

I also hereby commit to funding trophys for the F17 class this year.

Bob, not sure if you are willing to charter your boats, but if so, there are 2 tweaked rides that would be available for the race(Bob is a force of nature in this race, on a buddy's Marstrom monster cat).

So, let me know if you need logistics help on this one. I hope you'll consider coming down and testing your mettle on just a spectacular race. I've seen flying fish, dolphins, rays and plenty of the local wildlife either laying on the beach or flying by on speedboats... it is one of those life experiences that has to be experienced, not read about, so come on down.

I would be impressed if anyone does this race singlehanded on a boat without wings! I imagine it has been done before, but not in my short memory. It is a tiring race with 2 people on board! If I were up to fighting strength I might be inclined to try it though I wouldn't have any illusions about winning it solo on the Blade.
I haven't solidified how/who I'll be racing with. A friend and I might see if we can charter a N20 from Kirk.

Alas,

I won't be doing the race. Boat is still being repaired...

Who is going? I saw Andrew on the entry list...anyone else?
