Varnishing Saarberg Carbon Mast

Hi Guys

I'm looking at applying some new UV protection varnish to my mast. Can anyone offer any advice/tips? Would you recommend sanding with 800 grit wet & dry sandpaper first?

Is this for linear polyurethane? "Varnish" is not as very good description.
