Centre Board position sailing downwind - 03/25/07 03:47 AM

When sailing a Farrier type tri downwind under spinnaker is it best to fully retract the centre board or just retract it half way.?

We have tried all positions and it really doesn't seem to matter, for a long downwind run >4miles it may pay off, but generally at the angles we are sailing it doesn't. You also need to remember to pull it back down and doing so under load is impossible. Usually takes a few tries and good manuvering by the skipper. We tend to just leave it down now.

On the 28R I sail on we leave it alone. The only time we ever play the daggerboard is when we are doing the Juanna's Regatta in shallow water (Navarre, FL). Which, we will do the distance race I am sure, but not the triangles in the shallow water. It is a pain to bring back down under load, and we don't want to winch it back down, so again, we just leave it alone.

Have a great day

oooh, craig, don't ever winch the board... Speaking of who told us not to winch a board, the wise also told us not to bother with the board (unless of course it's shallow.)

drop it and forget it. busy enuf as it is.

Yeah, we really puppied up the board. But than again, we found out in November that it had six coats of bottom paint on, and......the painter had left AND painted over the masking tape, so I think we were grinding the tape down first. Ha Ha Ha!

Ya, all coming down for Round the Island? I have more jokes, but a bit of a surprise!

eeew, sanding out tape, ick...

Yeah, the plan is for RTI. We're gonna try for the Nats too - I am told by the PYC dockmaster that he can find a spot for Miz B where she can be left unfolded and mast up.

Mebbe by RTI we'll have instrumentation (depth gauge) and won't let y'all get away with that corner-cuttin' trick again ;-) and we'll have some actual TOB...
