2003 NORTHERN GULF COAST RACING

The Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) is an organization of Yacht Clubs from Houston to St. Petersburg. The GYA is very active in PHRF racing. Since the early 90's the GYA has had a Multihull Division, and this year a Multihull PHRF Committee has been organized. We have been assured of multihull class starts at certain regattas run by the GYA. We are setting up a limited schedule for this year, and will hopefully increase the number of events next year depending upon interest and participation. (The GYA is now supportive of multihull racing.)

In addition to the major regattas of interest for the region, this should help those who want to race locally get starts from their local clubs. For instance, in New Orleans, we have a multihull class in most weekend regattas and Wednesday Night series.


The two big events we are pushing for GYA full participation will be the GULFPORT TO PENSACOLA RACE, June 27 and 28, and the PATRIOTS REGATTA, at Pensacola Beach Yacht Club the following weekend, July 5 and 6. In October, there will be the West Florida Offshore Racing Circuit.

The idea is to get everybody racing the G to P to keep their boats in PCola for a week to race around the buoys the following weekend. It already looks like there will be a minimum of 10 multi's for each of these races. I encourage any of you guys looking to race this summer to seriously consider these two events.

In New Orleans, we will have a multihull PHRF class in the Leukemia Cup, March 15 and 16. We also have a class start in Tammany Yacht Club's "Two Against the Lake", a 40 mile double-handed race around Lake Pontchartrain on Sat., March 22. So far there are 5 multi's registered so far in each of these events. (2 F24MkII's, an F-28, an F31, and a Stiletto 27)

In Pensacola, the Pensacola Beach YC has numerous events to race in, plus the other races for beach cats. If there are any other events anyone would like to to make sure the GYA Committee is aware of, or if you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know.

I weighed my boat on a certified scale at 1620 lbs.









That included the basic boat Ohmohundro mast and standing rigging. I'm told that's how many companies including Corsair rate their boats. Adding a Honda 8, fuel tank with 3 gallons of gas, 4 sails, a 15 lb anchor, chain and line , tool box, cushions, porta potti, 80 amp battery, empty icechest, radios, search lite, life jackets, fenders added 400 lbs. Lyman White once told me these weights were typical. Comparing performance of these boats is hard because they are not truly one design.













At least 2 boats were built substantialy "not to plan", I'm referring to Randy Smyth's "YO" and Lyman White's "Silverheels". These had minimal interiors and bulkheads, minimal deck hardware and electrics, deleted front nets, as well as lowered floats "so the boats heel less" extra lightweight Marstrom masts, and were the first to introduce a really good replacement design for the original problematic rudder. These two special boats helmed by exceptional sailors went on to be the basis of what many feel is a too low handicap rating.
Regarding that special rudder, as other boats were built many were converted to that



Randy Smyth-Lyman White version. At least some others took the original Farrier
rudder and lengthed it a foot or so to maintain control when the hull is on plane. The point is a non standard design became the accepted standard in the case of the rudder.
Regarding performance, my boat with main and jib easily reaches at 16 mph in similar wind speeds with 3 persons in the ****.









Here in N.Y. staying dry in the **** is appealing , many photos show these tris sailed from the outer hulls which has some effect in lessening the leeward amas slowing the boat by their drag-the main hull at this point is semi-planing. The best GPS verified speed I've seen so far was 20.5 mph using the spinnaker. Two men were on the windward ama and one (septigenarian) calmly steered from the ****. Compared to well sailed beach cats in a variety of medium to light winds the beach boats typically are a little faster on a reach. I doubt any of them can point higher or tack faster, these are strengths of the design. One special feature not often discussed is the extreme ridgidity of the f25c due to the carbon construction. I've found














Supercats to be especially tight compared to some of the other beach cats. My two Stilettos, a 27 and a 23 were both very flexible. Twist between the hulls and flex in th main beams is visible while sailing. Squeaks and groans come with this flex.





Corsairs flex a little in this respect also but the carbon boat just doesn't twist or make noise, a very reassuring plus.I hope these comments help with some of the questions I've seen posted. Bogie

gameraf25c@mindspring.com ] who is the F25c Class rep. The F25c is the best boat I've sailed since 1959... Also there is a new Farrier design rudder for the F25c/A/F82/F82R that Ian has just announced on the Farrier Marine web site.

Are you coming to the nationals in April??? I may be able to get away if one guy will accept my bribe to switch vacation slots.

What ever happend to Silver heals? I saw it once in Sarasota but have not seen it in several years since. Does anyone still sell the F25C kit? I would like to build one.

I spoke with Farrier about the F25c being put into production. Start up cost would be around 500k. There maybe Colorado Composites original kits that are not completed but the last ones i saw were around three years ago. You can build an F82R under Ian's new construction method. If you're set on an F25c with carbon/Durakore then you'll have to make an oven to bake/cure it in.

If you're thinking "I'll save some money" that maybe possible but most likely you will be frustrated by the amount of time it takes to build one. Ian has an accurate estimate of construction costs on the Farier Marine web site. There is one nice one for sale on the Windcraft site. Its in Naverre I think. I took the exterior pics at the 2003 Nationals.

Most of the unfinished kits I saw were around 45k+ while a mostly finished can be higher up to a nice one 65k+ . Make sure the rudder is the long after market version. Mine is 42". You cab cartwheel these boats in rollers with the short rudder. Masts are Franspar[bullet proof], Omohundro and a few Marstroms.

As far as Silver Heals I heard it survived the hurricanes but have not had direct communication.

Thanks Thom. I have seen one F25C in the Orlando area, owned by Neslon Wright I think. There is now a group of F24's racing in Florida but no used ones around here for sale...and what is up with that new $49,000 day sailor??

For the first time in a long time I will not be tied up during the Corsair Nationals (when they were scheduled for earlier in April there was no problem. But, when they went to late April it has always conflicted with my seminars I run every spring in late April and the beginning of the Worrell 1000, etc.)

At any rate, I believe I can make it. The last time I sailed an F28R and took first in class and overall.
