Re: OZ Wild Cat Regatta - 10/05/06 10:52 AM

Hi all,

it was a big weekend, 12+ hours travel each way plus the time to pick up Michael's Blade in Sydney and double deck from there to Forster. With work as well I travelled over 2,800 km in a week .

Some 80 plus cats entered, with the F18 and A class holding state titles they had their own divisions on a seperate course .

The Hobie 16's including Youth's with spinnakers also had their own start 5 minutes ahead, but sailed the same course as the Mixed cat fleet, which was made up of all the other cats including F16 "Altered" and Michael and Phill's Blades. Major problem was the course, triangles which didn't suit the cat rigged F16's.

On Yardstick the results where therefore dominated by the older designs without spinnakers. Over the line "Altered" was near the front in most races except the 20 kt races on Sat. Michael showed huge improvement on his Blade at his first regatta and after some work on his upwind tuning should be on the pace in future, Phill got to blow out some cobwebs and remember why he designed the Blade in the first place, to go sailing. Something he hopes to do more of from now on.

Interesting points from the regatta where,

the continuing improvement of the AO F14's snapping at Altered's heels.

The performance of a couple of the Youth Hobie 16's under spinnaker, which where not far off Altered's speed downwind in a 10kt breeze, mind you Australia does have the best youth catsailors in the world:( .

Also the small number of Taipan 4.9's this year, I think 5 sloops and 3 cat rigs, well down on previous years of 20+ boats. I recognised some of the past Taipan sailors on F18's campaigning for the worlds I guess. Of course on triangles the sloops where still totaly competitive leading most of the races.

Taking a snapshot of results for the 11 mixed spinnaker cats on Yardstick the places where AO F14 1st. Taipan 5.7 with spinnaker 2nd. and F16 "Altered" third.

Regards Gary.

The Blade's spi pole in these pictures look extremely short compared to the Blades that I've seen, evolution I guess.

Certainly are some good photo's on that site Steve, great to see real wind in a photo. Those Hobie 16's put out more spray than Altered.

????

You should be able to put them on your PC somehow !

Can you open them and then save-as

Re: OZ Wild Cat Regatta - 10/11/06 04:46 PM

Here goes how to do it my friend.
Insert the cd
Go to my computer
Open whatever the CD drive letter is
hit control A at the same time (selects all)
Then hit control C at the same time (this will copy them)
Create a new folder on your desktop
Past all the photos into that folder (control V is the shortcut)
After all the photos are in the folder, close the folder
now right click the folder
Under properties tab there should be some check boxes called atributes
read only and hidden are the selections
Make sure the read only is unchecked
if it is unchecked, open the folder to get to the images
hit control A to select all again
right click, properties, atributes, uncheck read only.

Should work like a charm.

Re: OZ Wild Cat Regatta - 10/11/06 08:23 PM

I am clear you and your boat are quick so I have to ask if I am seeing strait. In this photo it seem as if there is a lot of flex in the platform y the set of the two bows.??
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: OZ Wild Cat Regatta - 10/12/06 10:48 AM

Hi Warbird,

you are right, the platform flexes a fair bit. I think it is mainly because the type of deck beam fitting on back beam, strap over the top and the narrow decks not giving much support area, along with the fact that there is 2m between the hulls at the back beam. Doesn't seem to slow it down too much though.

I think we had 9 starts for 5 races. Very tough starts with a heavy pin end bias only giving a few boats a clean start. Plenty of enthusiastic starters saw general recalls for the first 4 races. Black flags were flown after each recall for their 2 starts and forced people to behave

Here is my crew holding the boat before heading out.

Great shots!

Is that a white mozzie in front of altered?

Also, what sailmaker buildt the white spi with Mercedes logo on the Tiger? It is not a stock Hobie spi, is it (I am curious, as I liked the look of it)?

No that's a White Blade F16 in front of Altered. [Linked Image] [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

It belongs to Michael Boyd in Sydney and was only recently launched.

Re: OZ Wild Cat Regatta - 10/22/06 11:02 AM

Thanks Tim. I did not look closely enough, of course it's a Blade. Hullshape and bow should have been enough..
Is it my imagination, or is Michaels boom a bit flexible?
Good looking job! AHPC rudders and rigged for one up sailing?

Nice picture of Phill flying a hull downwind on AUS 01! Bodes well for Zandvoort. But I see Michael on AUS-05 have the same mainsail shape as 01. Any reason why he did not go for a fat-head main like what Gary runs on Altered?

That is Mark Lauruffa. It is a stock Hobie kite that he obviously bought from one of the teams at the ISAF Sailing Games. Mercedes Benz and Austrian Wind Power were the sponnsors of the event and all boats sails were covered in their signage.

Below is Bundy and Gashby at the event..... Note the spinnaker signage.

This looks a little uncomfotable....... Note the side stay

Re: OZ Wild Cat Regatta - 10/22/06 11:59 AM

Thanks Steve.

Now the follow up question obviously have to be: If the white spi is a stock Tiger design, what brand is the red spi hot on Lauruffas heels?

The shroud thing in the last picture must be an italian specialty PFD, helmet with visor _AND_ groin protection..

Not quiet sure but very likely a Tiger kite also..... Looks very simular to Bundy's kite above. Check out the panels, re-enforcement patches particularly around the retrieval points plus the sailmaker logo at the tack of each.

Re: OZ Wild Cat Regatta - 10/23/06 06:16 AM

Michael's rudders and centreboards are actually McKenzie foils. There is a difference in the rudder shape when you compare them with AHPC ones out of the water.

From what we've seen in the Mosquitos the McKenzie rudders seem to work better (Hah - I know that will raise a few eyebrows).

Michaels main is an Ashby. I don't know the thinking behind it.

I think it has to do with the date of ordering/manufacturing. Michaels boat was finised this year I believe while the mainsail was purchased much earlier, I even seem to remember about 2 years ago. At the time that was the shape Glenn was producing. Just look at Eric Poulsen mainsail, it has the same shape and I think it was made around the same time as Michaels.

Re: OZ Wild Cat Regatta - 10/24/06 11:09 AM

Yes correct as always Wouter

But Michaels main is bigger in the head than Phill's just not as big as mine, as his boom is longer, he did not need as big a head to get the max area in.
