F16's/spitfire at Grafham for open 21st / 22nd Oct - 09/27/06 10:35 AM

Has anyone any idea how many F16's may attend the Cat open ? Also, are any single handers planning to sail the Single handed Chanpionship ?

Same question for the Spitfire's

Cheers

I'm planning to be there. I know that Aaron is not, and I think Mark/Colin(A-class) were a "probably if the weather looks OK".

I'm planning to singlehand, and would like to take part in the singlehander championship... but I'm not sure what this means for any 2-up F16s as presumably we'd then be on different starts?

A class assoc have said they expect around 20 boats as it is the Nationals

Yes, the single handed champs will have a seperate start (and we should be going first). F16's will be in the fast Handicap, so if you want to take part in the SHC, you will not be with any 2 handed F16's.

Current projections look like we'll have 50ish single handers as I would like to encourage as many F16's as possible to sail in the Single handed Champs as it will also provide an excellent set of results for me to plug into the proposed SCHRS rule changes

I had planned to sail sloop with my 13 yr old son as I had promised him the chance before the season was over. I don't think it's a promise that will be easy to break....

Sail with your son ... experience together: PRICELESS.

The SCHRS rule changes can occur independent of you!

Spoken to JP today and due to a few more tweaks we have discussed, the boat will not be ready for the cat open. So, I'll be sailing my Inter 17. Looking forward to seeing you all.

I am looking forward to a great 'memorable' weekend! I really don't care about the singlehanded championships. I would much prefer to promote the solo/double handed ethos of the F16 fleet synergy. (Never forget the Circus)

I'm planning to come with my Spitfire. I'd like to meet up with you guys and see how you get on with solo sailing (on the sea) and those dagger-style rudders of yours when you get snagged in mooring lines...

But Grafham is a pond! and the answer to snagging dagger rudders (or any rudders for that matter) is don't snag them in the first place!

Re: F16's/spitfire at Grafham for open 21st / 22nd - 10/03/06 04:30 PM

When I said "see how you get on" I probably meant "discuss..." Anyway, despite my best intentions, I do catch a mooring line every now and then - one of the hazards of having a club course that is adjacent to the moorings - and in the heat of the moment I will sail too close on the 'tideward' side of those little buoys, courting danger every time. Broke my rudder stock last time - Doh! Then I figure that if I am going to break gear with kick-up rudders, then a Stealth might still make sense.

I'll look forward to meeting you and having a 'disscussion' then, Simon

Dave Tugwell, I know, has snagged a mooring - no breakages - just a short delay until normal service was resumed. I have to admit to a snag at speed through moorings also. Again no breakage, just a sudden stop. I guess it took about a minute to get going again although it felt a lot longer at the time!

Hi Scooby, I take it the Single Handed Championships will be handicap racing presumibly SCHRS. If so what is the rating for a single handed Stealth 'R' with a F16 main and a spi pole which is longer than the 800mm bow limit?
Can you take a guess from 1.08, 1.04, 1.03 or 1.02 as these are the various ratings which I have found so far.

IF my boat had been ready I would have been sailing a F16 single handed at 0.97 (as per current rules). What should your boat be sailing off; plug it into the calc. Excel sheet on the SCHRS website, or send me all the measurement points and I'll do it for you.

I would guess at around 1.02; but without the measuremnets I could not confirm. I would need LOA/ LWL; area mainsail; luff mainsail, all up weight, Spi area; lenght and area of plates.

I think you're right John, imagine trying to race with a rating of 0.97 We'll have to employ a few more clowns in this Circus. Still if it's anything like Datchet the F16's won 33% of the races against the 'A's on equal handicaps.

The F16 single handed rating might be changing for the revised SCHRS !

We in the South East USA region, no longer use the single handed F16 rating. We dont think there is a need for one.

I hope it does Simon. But will there always be a difference between the solo and double handed ratings, as this could be considered as detromental to Class which is actively promoting these sailing options under one unmbrella. Surely there must be some sort of tweek that can be introduced into the rating system to account for this.
I have a few more questions on this topic but it's probably better If we discuss them over a shed full of beers at Grafham.

OK, I am hoping to stay the night at the club (freezing in my tent no doubt) so hopefully we can sit doen for a chat.

There are always going to be differences, and I could write pages on the reasons why, but it would be much easier to explain over a drink at Grafham.

I've just found out that there is a raffle to be drawn on Saturday night at 18:00 for 3 pressure washers. Each boat that enters will get a ticket, BUT you must be in the top Bar at 18:00 to claim it, If you win and you are not there, it will be re-drawn.

It is very unlikely that any Stealth sailors won't be in the bar at 6.00pm!

Re: F16's/spitfire at Grafham for open 21st / 22nd - 10/20/06 07:35 AM

Hi everyone,

I thought it only fair to let you all know that I'm wimping out of this weekend. Sorry.

It's a whole combination of things, but one of the key problems I have is that I can't get my boat off the racks. It's currently blowing 14/17mph here and gusting 25/27 from the South. This means it's impossible to get off the slipway without assistance.

We have an odd situation at Leigh. Our boats are stored on large wooden platforms with wooden slipways that are just 9ft wide (the Stealth is 8' 2"). There is no access by land other than a narrow footpath (3ft at its widest). We can only get boats off when the tide is in (obviously). And to make matter worse, in the current wind conditions, the slipway faces South.

I'd decided to take this morning off to move the boat and load up, but now I'm stuck....
It's going to be pretty windy (and wet) this weekend, but I hope you all have a great time. I'll see how the weekend goes and I may drive up anyway on Sunday to say hello.

Again, sorry for wimping out.

Shame you won't make it John Sounds like getting your boat out is a bit of an adventure.

The weather forecast has been slowly improving all week - it's dropped from too much wind to a pretty modest 9/10mph. But I think it's going be rainy and sunny whatever happens. We have a word for this sort of weather, don't we... oh yeah, "English".
