SCHRS - 02/03/07 12:24 AM

It's not long before the new ratings are publicised. At my local watering hole (sailing club) we've opened a book on what the new ratings will be £1.00 per prediction, winner takes all. So apart from Scooby Simon (UK SCHRS Rep) what are your predictions our thoughts????

Below is a list of some of the current numbers.
Tornado 0.94
F20 0.97
F18 1.01
A Class 0.98
F16 0.98 single handed 1.02 Two up

I predict the following;
Tornado 0.94
F20 0.98
F18 1.01
A Class 1.00 (Should be 1.02)
F16 1.02 ( Both single or Two up)

THIS POST IS FOR AMUSEMENT PURPOSES ONLY!!!(No maths just gut feeling)
I know alot of you don't use SCHRS and probably haven't a clue what I'm on about but it should become clearer in the not so distant future.

Mark,

Hee hee hee, this could be Sooooooooooo Funny.

As an aside, while I'm down there for the nations cup, would people be interested in a proper chat about SCHRS and how it works, how we administer it etc.

Happy to put some time aside to answer peoples questions, explain things etc.

I hope to be to busy getting pissed to discuss anything sensible like SCHRS ratings. But there again it could be fun?
As I reckon I might have hit the Jackpot!!

Don't think so somehow. Apart from singlehanded F16=0.99 whoopeeedoo!!!!
When you look at sailing from a purely mathematical point of view instead of actual results there are bound to be a few discrepancies, add to the equation the UK F16 Circus then handicaps are just that!!(IT'S NOT THE WINNING).

Well, hopefully in a little while I'll be able to let you all know what we've been up to.

You are going to be running different number for different configurations on the F16?

Why not run uni and sloop rig with the same rating? I am interested to hear the UK reasoning behind two separate numbers. Wouldnt this cause the class to split up in any given race?

The current version produces different ratings for F16 1 and 2 up.

The current version produces different ratings for F16 1 and 2 up.
Is that how you folks want it? Do you think running a same single rating for both boats is a bad or good thing?

I wonder because here in the Florida we are running single a rating and pushing for a single rating.

Robi,

SCHRS is a measurement system so you can't change the number it produces unless you change one of the elements that gets measured. You can have a situation where the double handed sloop handicap is the same as the single handed cat rig - my Stealth R is (maybe that should be "was") 1.03 in either format. The F16 version is different because the main is larger and the jib smaller - although it's always surprised me that the difference is as much as 0.98 against 1.02.

The main reason the rule came up with 0.98 vs 1.02 was that the reduction of one crew, but only removing 3.7sqm of sail (the jib) made a big difference. All up sailing weight of the boat went from 257kb (crew at 75 each) to 179 so the single handed boat is 30% lighter, but, you went from 18.7sqm (main at 15 + jib at 3.7) upwind sail to 15 sqm which is a difference of approx 20%, so you have a more powerful boat.

it gets even worse when you consider the Spi as well !

That makes total sense.

Re: SCHRS - 02/03/07 10:03 PM

At Dart 18 events the class rates 2 up and singlehanded as equal - but SCHRS rates the singlehanded version 1 point slower - at least up to now

Maybe we'll get 1.02 for the A Class - then the Irish A's will join our circuit and attend events. C'mon RobD

Dermot, I noticed you remained very quite about the Spitfires rating. Now this is one Cat which number seriously needs dropping according to past results. 1.01 looks about right to me.

You mean it's faster than a F16 ? The last I heard was that the Spitfires were afraid of facing up to the F16s in the Uk

My quote from March last year:
Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simon said:
Classic example of this is the fact that (so far, I believe) that no Spitfires have come along to an F16 event as they are rated slower and so feel that there is no point. It's only 1% between F16 2up and Spitfire, however it is about 6% between F16 1up and Spitfire.

Simon, I ignored this comment until I had the usual Saturday bottle of wine
The Spitfires have a "One design" circuit, with 25 boats at their Nationals. Apart from JP, as far as I know, no other F16s have ever challenged the top Spitfire sailors at open events.
I hope that some day the Spitfires will enhance the F16 fleet, but at the moment there is no contest in the UK or France.

The boat is fast - BUT The Spitfire sailors are just BETTER.
The top Spitfire sailors from the past 3 years are now some of the top F18 and Tornado sailors in the UK.

Re: SCHRS - 02/04/07 07:45 AM

I would have to agree with all of the above and so would most F18 sailors. Spitfires are fast cats crewed by even faster sailors. IMO the only draw back with them is the one design rule which makes new sails etc very expensive compared to formula cats.
Any idea what your new SCHRS rating might be?

I really don't know. I just enjoy the fact that I can still sail fairly competitively and not put too much strain on muscles and joints that are "getting on a bit". I can do that in the Spitfire.

Apart from the fact that the Spitfire is rated slower than the F18s and gets a few minutes on them, there is also the (unfair ?) advantage of being able to tuck in behind a F18 or 5.9SX and not have to fight past them before the finish line. A F18 covering a Spitfire up the last beat is a waste of time, they need to go for speed and open the gap.

Whatever the new number, I hope to be back out there at the end of March, enjoying my sailing.

In the meantime I'll just watch "The Match" on TV this afternoon

What can I say Ireland didn't play badly considering they had sixteen men on their side.

I suppose that the Ref was a bit easy.
But the scoring was all Ireland's They did run in 3 tries and give away 3 penalties

Thanks Mark. I think that Ireland were lucky - Wales took the initiative and fought very hard.

Back to business:

Did you see the results of the Weston Warm Up at the weekend ?

RESULTS
1st Hugh Styles,Luke Butler 11pts NACRA INFUSION
2nd Grant Piggott,Greg Windle 11pts TORNADO
3rd James Power,Gillian Power 14 pts CAPRICORN
4th Stuart Gummer,Ellen Forshaw 14pts CAPRICORN
5th Adam Piggott,Ryan Crawford 17 pts TORNADO
6th Chris Sproat,Georgina Burke 18 pts SPITFIRE

Apart from first place, they were all Spitfire sailors or ex Spitfire sailors.
The Spitfire in 6th place dominated the Spitfire circuit in 2006. If they had all sailed Spitfires, the results would have been similar. Maybe the numbers are not too far off.
These are sailors who score highly at events no matter what cat they sail.

agree, they are hard to beat!
We dont sail too many handicap events but there is no doubt that the F18s were noticeably quicker last year than previous years.
Spitfire may get knocked on handicap this year but im still happy with it

Well, all the empirical evidence says that A is slower than F18 - best example is Auz - highest density of top class A sailors and pretty good F18 sailors and still the F18 comes out faster than the A on their equiv to our (UK) PY system. Ditto USA. So I would like to see that, with the F16 being about the same as the A.

Re: SCHRS - 03/06/07 06:49 AM

You're right there Sailwave, but somehow I think things are going to change less than I first imagined. I wouldn't be suprised if the total difference between new and old ratings is less than 20 seconds in 100 minutes.
