Australian F16 Event Notice - 11/22/07 09:32 AM

Hi all,

the annual Victorian F16 State Challenge will be held at Portland 5-6 April 08. Sailors from all states are welcome, it's closer to S.A. than it is to my home in Vic. (that's a not so subtle suggestion for the crow eaters <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> ).

All cats that fit into F16 welcome, Blades, Vipers, Taipans, Mosquitos, Cobras etc. if you are not sure if your 5m or under cat is eligible just ask.

More info as we get closer. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 11/22/07 09:40 AM

Hi Gary

We're welcome to participate with or without spinnakers as I've read in message recieved yesterday, which is good, cause no-one in Portland has one to my knowledge.

Gary,
Thanks for the advance notice.

Just re read your post cause for a second I thought it may only be open to Mexicans.

I should have a boat by then and hope to come along.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 11/23/07 07:48 AM

Hi Matt,

wasn't relying on local boats for the spinnaker fleet, Gordon and Jenni won the event last year on their Taipan with spinnaker. The winners get to nominate where and when the event is held the next year, Portland was their choice, good idea as it will allow S.A. F16's to participate.

Happy to have all 5m cats on board, with or without spinnaker. But expect the courses to suit spinnakers. Have previously had non spinnaker cats compete. But it is first past the post, no handicaps. In the past we have had awards for classes of boats within the fleet, so if you get enough non spinnaker Taipans there, no reason why you can't have a award within those boats. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 11/23/07 08:50 AM

Hi Gary

Sorry there wasn't anything stand offish in my post, if it came across that way, just relaying the message I recieved a couple days ago from Marcus, which said with or without kites.

Theres probably at least 6 that I know of that would sail without, maybe a couple more if we mustered them up.

For those that haven't been to Portland, its a really nice place to sail and hang out, nice waters, which is probably why they chose it.

You could find some photos of the harbour through Google to have a look.

Does Portland Yacht Club have a website? I have considered going down in the past but haven't been able to find much info.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 11/23/07 10:34 AM

Hi Mr.Squiggle

No it doesn't and information on the YachtingVic site is a little dated.

Dennis Baker, Luke Donovan, Brad Hein are a few of the Taipans that sail out of Portland, and visits every now and again by Noel Grellet, who like me has no or not enough water at home.

Hi all,

it's getting close now. Notice of race is on the way. Look forward to seeing all those S.A. boats soon.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 03/13/08 10:31 AM

Hi all,

Notice of race is complete. PM me your email and I can send it to you.

Asking around it looks like there will be 10 plus Vic boats and about 1/2 that from S.A.. Made up of Blades, Taipans, Mossies and the first Vic. appearance of the Viper?

Greg hopes to have the second boat in OZ there, to my dissapointment, he hasn't taken the challenge of racing me one up on it <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />, but intends for his sons Brett and Liam to sail it <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />. They will be hard to beat, with Bett's experience crewing the Capricorn and Liam being a top cat rig Taipan skipper, never mind the fact they have sailed nearly everything on two hulls since they could walk. They will be hot <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />.

I have been trying to tell Greg he should sail Liam's cat rig Taipan, as it will be available <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />, but no luck yet <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />. This is looking like the biggest F16 event in OZ so far, so if you are interested in F16 make sure you are there.

Just a couple accommodation options for those interested.

The Centenary Caravan Park, Unpowered or Powered Sites and Cabins. 0355231487. I've always stayed here for regattas and will do again this time.

The Claremont Holiday Village, Cabins and Sites available, I've stayed in a cabin here once to attend a wedding, quite a nice place.

The www.richmondhenty.com.au for motel accommodation close to the yacht club.

I would say the Centenary and Claremont are about the same distance away, about a 5-10 minute walk.

Quote
In 2 weeks we have the F16 challenge in Portland Victoria we will have boats from multiple builders and we will see how close the racing is. I have my Taipan and although I have been in a cast for the last 6 weeks it not going to stop me from showing how quick it can be.I would like scales to be there so I can get an official certificate but seeing there is no formal association yet I doubt this will happen. In time Associations will be formed then things like rules will then be able to be amended at this time nothing can be done until this happens. If you like what you see you will join in if you don't there are plenty of other way's to have fun on the water.

Hi Danny,

good to hear you will be making the F16 State Challenge despite your foot problems <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.

Look forward to a good weekend of socialising and checking out other F16's, with serious on water racing, but no carry on about weights and stuff. This will be the first getting together of purpose built F16's in OZ and as you say we can get more serious in the future events.

Can't wait to get there, sailing F16 is what it is all about, more fun than anything else you can do on the water <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

Howdy All,

Aus 403 & Aus 404 (Aus Blades) will be there.

We hope to bring some digital scales for those wanting their boats weighed & measured.

Weather forecast doesn't seem to bad.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 03/31/08 09:03 AM

Hi all,

weather forecast looks OK for Sat. Sun. Temp. around 20 degrees, offshore winds around 8-14 knots, seas shouldn't be a problem in what the locals tell me is a sheltered bay. Well that is my reading of the forecast from. www.seabreeze.com.au Check it out for 7 day wind and wave forecasts.

Looks like great spinnaker conditions <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

I will be leaving Paynesville Tuesday as I have to tow the Blade to Echuca first, work conference <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. Then will leave Echuca for Portland Friday, will have towed boat aprox. 920km to get there. Not bad when you think this is all in the second smallest state in OZ. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

It is going to be a difficult conference, day dreaming about sailing all the time. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Won't be back to computer till Monday, so just hang on for results or see you there <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.

Oops just realized this weather sounds like what I posted for Easter regatta. Looks like I will Jinx the forecast again <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 03/31/08 11:14 PM

Hi all,

The FCA Blade Aus400 is available for Demo, outside of race times. The schedule is pretty tight being 4 races a day, but I am sure someting can be arranged, if not on the weekend another time can be arranged.

Just spoke to Greg, the Viper is on the wharf in Melbourne so they are expecting to attend. So will be a few boats to look at. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Time to hit the road, catch you all next week.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 04/05/08 10:42 AM

Hi All

I'm not there today, going down tomorrow, but about 12 knots today, and by the sounds of it they put in 5 races today.

The younger generation of the Goodalls are winning at the moment with 3 firsts and 2 thirds.

I don't have much more info than that at present.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 04/07/08 07:59 AM

Hi all,

just got home. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

What a great regatta <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Will be working on a right up, but firstly thanks to Gordon and Jenny for organising the location, Portland Y.C. for running a great regatta and the local Taipan sailors that gave their sailing time to go in the start and rescue boats <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

David and Wendy at the Henty Bay Van and Cabin Park for the fantastic hospitality, feeding us all Friday night with the biggest chicken stew ever <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. Keep breeding those rabbits <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Any sailors that are down that way make sure you stay and talk sailing with Dave, he has plenty of spare time <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />.

Conditions where first 5 races Sat. Flat water shifty gusty offshore wind starting at average 8 knots building to 15kts and dying out to 8 knots again. Last 3 races Sunday on shore winds with small swell and building chop, winds starting av.8 knots building to 12 knots. Nearly all races the wind was strong enough for trapezing upwind nearly all the time, for most sailors. All races windward and returns 2laps with finish times as short as 20 minutes.

Quick conclusions from the regatta from my view point are.

Starts where important with short races, fairly obvious I guess.

The best crewed boat won.

The difference in straight line speed, between different designs in the conditions was negligible.

Between 10 and 15 knots the difference between one up and two up boats is crew work.

One up and two up boats can race very closely.

Trapezing down wind, one or two up is the fastest way <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />, once wind is sufficent, aprox. 10 knots when sailing with swell and only made bigger difference as wind increased to 15 knots. One and two up boats where seen trapezing downwind, sailing 5 degrees lower and faster <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> than those sitting on the side.

Nearly every body had a look at the front at some stage, with many finishes only seconds seperated positions.

The Mossies where allways ready to show the Faster? F16's when they made a mistake, by leading around the first mark on one occasion and passing many down wind <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />.

The South Australians will be hard to beat in the future as they get more experience on F16's. Tony had never sailed a Blade before, Danny had not sailed for 2 months and still recovering from foot operation, Marcus hadn't sailed a Blade since Zandvoort. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Thats Laurie at the wheel - Portland Yacht Club Commodore, Brad Hein (Taipan 4.9 Cat), Luke Donovan (Taipan 4.9 Sloop),
And Fred Baker (Flying Fifteen and father of Dennis Baker)

One good story from weekend I think is, I think Col Johnson, broke off a chainplate prior while rigging, these are the screw in type on the later model Taipans, Brad Hein, being a fitter, went to work, Kempe Engineering, and made a new one in half hour, screwed straight in and away they went. The Hein family (Brad, and especially his parents are always the first to jump in and lend a hand and get you going again, have done since I was a kid, sailing juniors. Great people and great friends.

You guys were not kidding about boats being often only seconds apart !

Wow, looks like some excellent racing !

Nice fleet of 12, nice spread in winds, no blow-outs or drifters for a change.

Well done !

P.S. Tim, can you tell us how you made that nice table ?

I would like to see the F16 class propose a rule that states Marcus can add a jib to his boat and race one up as a sloop. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 04/08/08 10:37 PM

Steve - no jib required....i just sailed like an old dog on the first day & managed to blow out some cobwebs on the second day.

Excellent conditions for F16 racing & boy was it tough going.

The event was clearly won by boat handling, not boat speed.

Something I need more practice at..... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

can you tell us how you made that nice table ?

That's just an HTML table included in my post. In the drop down box just above where you enter the text for a post I changed it to "using HTML" (instead of "using UBBCode").

What was the word on the fathead taipans?

What in particular about the big head mains did you want to know? The consensus from Taipans now is that they are a good thing.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 04/10/08 11:51 AM

I was the only one with the old style Taipan sail. People who have sailed with both say that the new sail is about 1 to 3 minutes advantage in a normal race.
Upwind in our short races (and our good wind, and my heavy weight), I didn't notice very much difference, but on longer legs, perhaps it would be more obvious.
The main speed difference between boats seemed to be boat handling, especially downwind, where I lost out. I chose not to trap in any race. In the winds we experienced, most sailors seemed to agree that trapping downwind usually payed off. (The exception was the Mosquitos, which are very light, and sail low and fast sitting in downwind).
I'm not sure that these races will help answer your question Nick, other than anecdotally, sailors love the new sail. One comment was that when the right amount of downhaul is applied, the sail flicks off at the top when overpowered, and less sheeting is required.

PS - this was a great event, nice to meet all these keen sailors, and I learned a lot by being whipped by them!

That's all I wanted to know, whether ppl liked them and whether they thought it was a good amendment to the class.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 04/11/08 04:02 AM

One of my observations from the weekend was the speed of the sloop rigged taipans up wind. In particular Gordon Barrett (tasi oki) & James McDonald (Macatack). They footed off about 2-3 degrees & there speed was nearly 50% faster.!

Sure their jibs were everlapping & not F16 compliant for sail area, but an amazing difference that none of the fully compliant F16's could match.! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

I also observed that Dennis Baker (current cat rigged national champion) was using the latest generation Goodall "fat head" mainsail & there was virtually no speed difference between F16's (cat rigged) & Dennis's boat, incidently Dennis was not running a spinnaker system & amazingly did not loose much on the downwind legs. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Personally i think our upwind spped compared is a good sign for the F16 class as the Taipans are our initial benchmark.

Finally, altough there are a hundred more <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> I will get them put in a bucket or somewhere <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />.

Payback on Danny, he knows why <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. It's not as bad as it could have been Danny, I could have shown the next shot where you hit the mark and the mossies go passed <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />. Greg got the whole sequence and more <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />.

Blade 404, Viper 113 and Taipan 334 appear to have very similar sails. Are this the new Taipan big head main?

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 04/17/08 03:42 PM

This is something I haven't seen before - looks like the rear footstrap is a piece of hose tied to the rudder stock. Avoids any drilling. Anyone else doing this?

Thats not a foot strap.....its an elastic ckicken line that brett wasn't using the time this pic was taken.

Re: Australian F16 Event Notice - 04/18/08 06:08 AM

Actually Mark - if you look closely they have a 25mm webbing just above the blue chicken line....thats the foot strap.

This photo was taken before the start of the afternoon racing & they were sailing a bit higher to get some good action for the photos & hence the reason for not using the chicken line or the footstrap.

The Viper had Greg Goodall sail standard for the Viper.

404 had Greg Goodall sail made for the Blade.

332 Sail is Taipan wide head sail made by Steve Brewin.
