"Youtube" cameras?

"Youtube" cameras? - 06/11/08 08:46 AM

Electronics just keep on getting more affordable if you dont want the high-end stuff. I have been looking a bit at getting a headcam with reasonable quality for use in our sailing amongst other things.

Option 1: Get a high end bullet cam and a videocam with AV in. Lots of $$$

Option 2: Buy an appliance like:
http://www.goprocamera.com/index3.htm
http://www.amazon.com/Oregon-Scientific-Action-Memory-Camcorder/dp/B000F5FKHI

The quality of videos made with option 1 is really so much better than with option 2, but the cost compared to the appliances..

Does anybody know of other affordable appliances with better quality on the end result? Somebody mentioned the Archos with bullet cam extension but seems impractical.

To see the quality of different solutions, Youtube is your friend. Just search for the camera solution in question and you get demonstrations on how well they work.

I am seriously considering the gpro camera - Tony F18 mentioned this item a couple months ago?

Do you have a link?

So far I have seen footage from the GoPro3, Oregon Scientific ATC 2K, and a CCD+Archos-type recorder.
The problem with the CCD+Archos-type solution is that most of these type or recorders are not waterproof, someone brought one to the Tiger Worlds and drowed it on the second day even when it was in a waterproof phone case.

IMHO for Youtube videos the GoPro3 is the best in terms of video quality.

I've got the Oregon Scientific cam!

It's a pretty good little gadget! Stand alone with about an hours footage on highest quality (2gb)

Quality is definately not excellent, but it is durable!

The microphone makes for quality expletives to!

I must confess that the Oregon Scientific solution seem to have an egde as you can strap it to your head (ouch) without a helmet. I can se many other uses in addition to just saling. E.g. our boatbuilding, skiing, biking, running (I have some scenic tracks here), playing with the kids etc. etc.

Agree with Tony on the quality of the Digital Hero GoPro3.

Tony,

I was really impressed by the camera you brought to one of the landyachting sessions.

Which type was that ?

Hi Wouter, that was the GoPro3 when landyachting.

Rolf: The new GoPro's have more mounting options than the original (check their website) I am going to experiment with heavy-duty velcro soon to see if that makes it easier to mount.
Oregon Scientific's camera is a lot easier to mount but IMHO suffers from serious over-exposure.
(I have raw footage from a GoPro3, Oregon, and an Archos'ish camera I could give you some if yer interested).

Rolf,

We have an oregon scientific camera. Quality is ok and it's nice to have sound also.
You can see some movies on youtube (searchkey BEL666), but those were resized to fit.
If you want I can put 10secs of high resolution footage.

Downside is that you can't see where you're pointing at when putting it in position.
Also it's not that easy to put it somewhere else than on the spinpole.

But anyway good price/quality.

Hey Mitch,

When are we going to see the beast on youtube? Can't wait to see it in action. I'm sure there will be plenty of expletives. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Where did you get your camera?

Simon
I have been reluctant to put any movies on youtube because I don't want to embarass myself!!

I am still trying to figure out the best spot to put the camera ie head, shoulder, bow, shroud etc.

I got the camera on ebay last year. From memory it was about $140 then another $20 to buy a 2gb sd card. I got it from an american site... so they are probably cheaper now thanks to the $AUD. Its so simple, it justs plugs into the computer an you treat it like a usb drive!

The quality of what I've put on youtube doesn't compare to the quality of what is on my hardrive. Even in a higher quality, it isn't as good.

This was shot with a Hero3 strapped to the front of my helmet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wFAVnWstms

Tony,

I got the Digital Hero GoPro unit last week. Got to test it this week in our monday evening building session. To shorten things up and give an impression on what we are doing, we used the time lapse function to compress a two hour session into three minutes. It is a cool little unit which I think I'll have loads of fun with. Now if we could just get an F16 on the water, we could make some really cool stuff <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Thanks for the tip about this unit!

Anybody who knows how to embed videos into this forum?

Hi Rolf,

Looking good there, hope to see some sailing action shots from you soon.
Embedding video is really simple, when you make a new post or reply click on the "Make post" dropdown box and select "using HTML and UBBCode".
Now on the Youtube page where your video is at copy the code where is says "Embed" in the righthand corner.

Simply paste that code into the post and you are done!
