F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/25/09 04:06 PM

Hey, I actually got the weekend off! April 18-19. I'll be there as Uni, who else is definately coming and in what configuration? See ya there!

And Robi, save me a spot on the floor please! Thanks. Most likely come over early Saturday, but will keep begging mamma for a Friday release... grin

No problem Tim, so far its You and Arie and (crew?)

Plenty of room left. Bring some poker money cause Dave already committed to playing.

Thanks Robi. I'm not worried about Dave, 'cause I can feed him rum until I start winning, but your mom won't be there, will she? I don't know if I can afford that! grin

Two Blades from the land of Mary. Both Uni.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/25/09 09:22 PM

Two Blades from Chattanooga.

Ed-you all need to swing by SF on the way down-we have 5 16's so far!!!!!

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/25/09 10:14 PM

Sounds like we could have lots of Uni's, maybe more than Sloops. Wow. I'm counting Matt/Gina, the local Viper, Joanna's two, as sloops, any other of the new Vipers coming down? Tom from BHM?
Posted By: Joanna

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/26/09 01:11 AM

One is uni and the other sloop. I am hoping Andy, Mike, and Tom will be there.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/26/09 02:53 AM

Any of you folks plan on sailing friday? I am taking my boat from the yacht club to the beach and wouldnt mind some practice racing starts etc. I plan on being at the beach no later than 3pm.

I think Terry is in as uni as well. Seth will be there, not sure if uni or sloop.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/26/09 12:21 PM

As much as I'm into saturation sailing I just can't make it happen for SF and GYC back to back. Ed

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/26/09 12:46 PM

I might be able to make it, but I'm not too sure yet. It'll be at the last minute, that's for sure.

I know I can't make SF, have family things that I need to do.

Awesome - we are really looking forward to this one.

5 boats at the GYC
3 other FL regulars (me, Timo, t-back)
2 MD
2 TN

Other firm rumours

Cab, tshan, 1 IL

If we can get the new Viper guys to show, and a couple of the other fairly close guys. There are boats in Cocoa, Jacksonville and 2 more at least in the panhandle. We could get 20 F16s on the line.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/26/09 01:10 PM

It looks like there were 10 F17s at their midwinters. It would be too cool to double their numbers! grin

That would also give us the largest fleet.

One thing we need to think about. I believe the NOR specifys 15 boats for an independant start, but wouldn't it be better to keep the spin boats together? There will probably be two I-20s, maybe more. No idea what the F18s want to do.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/26/09 07:17 PM

I dunno, you'll have to ask Matt! But, we have 8 boats registered and 3 locals who are 99% sure. My 'rithmetic makes that 11!

13 F16S PREREGISTERED! TOO COOL! There are still two locals (who avoid the internet like the plague) so it looks like we will have a separate start.

3 F18s, no I20s registered.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/30/09 01:16 PM

Pete do you have nothing better to do than stir ****?

We do not want a separate start. Untill the start line is too wide for the bay, keep them together.
Posted By: pgp

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/30/09 01:22 PM

YOU NEED TO READ THE NOR!! I'm not stirring anything! I'm trying to prevent it.

" Classes A-Cats will have a separate start time. Any other class with fifteen (15) or more boats may be given a separate start, and any class with 5 or more boats will be scored separately. Others start together, sailing under Portsmouth handicap."

From speaking with the OA I can tell you a separate start will be planned unless the competitors request differently.

You're not on the OA, neither am I. If you want your thoughts considered, contact them.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/30/09 01:33 PM

Who's on the OA? I will gladly talk to them.

What is the point of working to organize a big regatta just to have it broke up into a crap load of little fleets?

And only 3 A-cats, but surely a lot more of these will be attending !

18 (level performance) formula spi boats in a single start, that is a fun fleet to race in !

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 03/31/09 07:11 PM

I think there are at least 10 A cats based there so I expect to see most of them, plus the others in the area. Should be a very good turnout. The I-20's and F18's may have other regattas such as Spring Fever (the weekend prior) that are in the way. There are a few F18's based there who will most likely show up but not too many I-20's based there.

I am assuming you just stay on 31st Ave and drop down to Shore Blvd and that is the public beach?

Coming from the panhandle, is 19 quicker or interstate all the way down to Tampa?
Posted By: Robi

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 04/01/09 08:12 PM

Come all the way down on the interstate I75 then get off 275 towards Tampa or St Petersburg. Get off 22nd AVE south and head westbound. Continue west, turn south on 55street south continue on this road until the end. It will take you straight to the beach parking lot.

Looks like we will have Falcons (yes the name issue is solved), Blades, Taipans, and Vipers. It would be cool to get them all lined up.

OK, now, how many will be racing as Uni and how many 2 up? It would be very cool to score them together and separately. One start but keep separate lists -if- we have an equal amount of each. Of course we can always figure it out after the regatta too. I'm not trying to add more stuff for the RC to do, but we can figure it when we see the scores.

I am not sure how they plan on keeping score, but all you would have to ask for is the time sheets and you guys should be able to score eachother on the beach. Nothing official, just you guys alone. I think it would be awesome if you guys did that. ****, even amongst yourselves can provide some mini swagger, six pack of beer, some gloves. I dunno its a great idea.

Are they (The RC) even going to keep times on the F16's? I don't see the need if we are all using the same P number, right? I can see them keeping times on the F18's and I20's, but taking times for 19 F16's is kind of unnecessary busy work, right?

Things are getting pretty hectic! Still, it would be nice to have all that data. I love going over that stuff! I can see why baseball fans spend so much time going over records and averages. It's fun in and of itself.

You could ask the RC if they are willing to do it. I've been to the well too often and won't be going back for a while. wink

Registration is up! 33 total boats, but 2 duplications bring it down to 31 (all classes).

Mike Borden(ME)
Steve Miller
Pete (I'm guessing you are because that's the way you sail most of the time)
Terry Back
Tim Bohan

Anyone else?

You don't have to worry about me though, I'll be bringing up the rear. I still have to familiarize myself with the boat before I get any good at it.

A fifth of beer??? Don't you know betting on a weather driven event is bad karma? eek

Timbo - Ohh, you get a free bowl of soup with that hat?.....Looks good on you though.

Robi, last I heard your boat was in Jacksonville. I saw Legrands out at Kelly park today, but heard they were still not going to race. Last I heard Paul was out also event though he claimed to have a blast last year. THE chuck is sitting at hme, somebody could get him to push Paul, or at least come on his 18 and there could be 3 more.

Sorry Matt, but I am afraid of the consequences of pushing The Chuck. No one dares push the Chuck, if you touch him, you never did! He let his body get in contact with you!

I was just out practicing, man have I gotten rusty! No swimming but a couple of very ugly gybes and take downs! I think I've got it sorted out but I had forgotten how much work it is doing it alone! No wind all day but at about 6pm the east coast sea breeze finally came in so I went out for an hour. The forecast for tomorrow is even lighter, crap.

That would be Caddyshack.

I'd like to but it would take me 2 hours to unrig and put the boat on the trailer, 2 more hours to drive over, 2 more to rig it up...6 hours before I get it in the water, and I have a back yard full of water. Oh, and then I'd have to do it all backwards to get home. And I have things that have to get done here with the wife and kids, if I am going to be -allowed- to go racing next weekend. So I'll stay here and hope for the best.

WOW, 2 hours to unrig a unirigged f16? damn I am glad I got a F18 then 45 mins max for me from trailer to water. I am telling you, these F18s are so much easier to rig up!

LOL; I think Timbo is trying to make a case for not going.

I can do it in 50 mins SINGLE handed; I know Anne and Paul have done trailer to water in 30 mins.

I can do it much faster but I don't like to rush. I have to stop several times and open another beer.

Just saw the weather report, now they are saying 10-15 here so I'll get back out.

I will be uni, as Mike said. I hope to be on the beach by 3:00 PM Friday for a quick rig and twilight sail before the festivities begin.

It can take me a pretty long time to rig, if I remove all the wires and spin halyard from the mast for long road trips. Not having a crew to help makes it a little longer too ... and of course the "occasional" beer break.

God bless me if I have to try to figure out how to add the jib stuff back :-)

17 boats on the pre-registered list.

Robi - did you confirm that an event photographer is going to be there? I'd hate to miss having a lot of pics from this regatta with such a good turnout. I could probably lure one to town for a free hotel room.

I echo the thanks for your efforts.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 04/10/09 03:12 PM

The photographer will not be there. He is deploying and will not be able to attend the event. I asked him to burn the photos from last year on cdroms and that I can sell them for him. Now its a matter of him doing it, seems like he is a procrastinator and leaves things for last minute. He had to know about his deployment with more than 30 days notice and he just informed me this two days ago, which is roughly a week and a half before the event. I will no longer invite him and let the Yacht Club worry about those things.

Any of you guys have Roy Laughlin's telephone or email? I don't know where he's been lately, he used to come and take pictures at all the local regattas, he did the Alter Cup when the Blades were used two years ago. But I havn't seen him since. Any of you east coasters know how to get in touch and see if he can do it?

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 04/10/09 06:02 PM

Arrrrgh. Philip Mumm did a ton of pictures from the F18 NAs and they turned out fantastic. We took some pictures down to Robbie D when I picked up my boat and they were advertising quality stuff. He has all the gear. I'll try to talk him into coming down after he gets back from Spring Fever.

He'd probably give the pictures away if we cover his hotel room (I'll cover his travel) and invite him to all the parties!! Would it be hard to get him on a picture boat or mark boat?

I will contribute to his hotel room if we can get pics.

As for the idea of uni stuff, if the wind is blowing and you all decide to team up could you please let me know. smile

We are going to be down there friday midday and setup and get out on the water. Oley and Joanna are really dialed in right now after crushing the fleet at spring fever. (They were even beating the A cats around, and even some of the I-20s who started 5 min before us).
Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 04/13/09 01:05 PM

I just got off the phone with the Commodore at 9:00 this morning. The GYC yard is full, so unless you've made previous arrangements, take your boat to the beach in downtown Gulfport.

The beach is open Friday at noon (maybe a little sooner).

We are trying to find a spot for Phillip to bunk in a private home. Nothing certain as yet.

Robbie Daniel will be conducting an on water clinic on Friday afternoon for those interested.

I talked with Philip yesterday on his way back from Spring Fever. He'd really rather sail - anyone know of an F16 he can borrow/charter?

Pete, we are coming down in the RV and were thinking about parking around the club. Any idea of the possibitly of parking just outside the gate area since sounds like the club might be filled with boats.

We have problems with the City in that regard.

Sent you a PM.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 04/16/09 01:50 PM

I was talking to a couple of folks who traveled down for the regatta and we came up with a GREAT idea! Those of you coming down for the GC in November(?) should leave your boats at the club, fly back for Tradewinds in January, and pick up your boats after GYC's Spring regatta. It seems there are some really cheap air fares these days and the storage fee would be a lot cheaper than gasoline for those drives.

Re: F16 count for April GYC race? - 04/16/09 04:14 PM

pete that is not a bad idea. We are going to do steeplechase, and that is just soon after GC so that will work out. Any idea what the cost of storage might be?

Not exactly, but it's minimal. I'll check and get back with you over the weekend.

Check your PM.

See you soon!
