2009 Global Challenge

2009 Global Challenge - 04/23/09 08:04 PM

The NOR for the 2009 Global Challenge is now posted on the GYC web site www.gulfportyachtclub.com

Mark the dates. GYC puts on excellent events and this should be one of their best yet. We had 19 rigged at the last event. I know there is another container for the Alter cup planned, so getting space on there should be no problem from a few of you guys down under. Is there a group out of Europe? I know you guys in Scandahoovia should finally have some 16s on the water, and come November the water starts to get a bit hard up there.

More information to follow shortly.

For those seeking housing, you can try Vacation Rentals By owner (VRBO). I've used them at several regatta sites. Here is a listing for Gulfport and nearby towns:

I am organizing now. We will be the heavy weights so bring on the wind!!!
I need to put on my thick skin suit when you guys yell at me for:
#1. not following the rules
#2. capsizing on top of you
#3. talking a good game but not bringing it
#4. when I break **** right and left and ask to borrow things

I've already got vacation planned around it. Get this, my dad of 61 years of age is going to crew with me. smile Well, I'm probably going to be crew, he is going to skipper. The younger one needs to pull the strings.

I figured it would be a lifetime experience for him. Heck, my Mom and girlfriend are coming too.

Are there going to be any charter boats?

Make sure that you guys get out at least a couple of times before subjecting him to a week of racing. wink

My dad decided he wanted to race with me at a little local race. It was only about 18 and pretty flat water, but he managed to do a full Peter Pan followed shortly therafter by a trip over the front between the beams when I inadvertantly hooked a crab pot going down wind. There he caught his foot and was held under by the water pressure untill I could manage to get the boat rounded up and stopped. He lost his new sunglasses and hat before falling the rest of the way in. Demoralized and winded he then had to edure being bodily dragged back into the boat because he could not get himself back on. Back on the beach he has now vowed he was not going back out with me again.

Woops - Dont let this happen to you (In announcer voice over) But at least at GYC there will be pleanty of Rum

Don't worry, I plan on taking him out a few times before we do the GC. smile

At least that's my plans.

Is anyone working on TV, video, photographic coverage? If not I'll be glad to beat the bushes and see what I can come up with.

You might be able to get the local news to give it some TV coverage, we can also invite Gary Jobson and see if he has any ideas on who and how to get some media coverage. We could also try to get a photographer.

In any case it isn't too soon to start. I'll take it up with Mary Ann this weekend.
