F16 National Championship Regatta

Posted By: pgp

F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/24/10 12:24 PM

The 2010 F16 National Championship Regatta will be held April 9-11 at Gulfport Yacht Club and will run concurrently with their Spring regatta which is open to all catamarans.

This will be a three day nine race format and will require at least ONE crew member to be an active member of the U.S. F16 class association.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/24/10 03:38 PM

The spring regatta is now called the F16 National Champs? Is there a NOR posted anywhere?

IMO that gives out bad information, should have kept the title used last year and just sub title it the F16 champs.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/24/10 04:26 PM

You're on the F16 forum, amigo. The information here is for F16 sailors.

I'm not sure what the title is but it seems everyone is welcome. The F16 Championships will run concurrently.

Where are you? Haiti? We missed you last night, lots of good food.

No NOR yet, I'll try to get it posted by the end of the week.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/24/10 10:49 PM

I'll be there.

Is the F16 3 days, and the regular regatta 2 days?

I meant to give someone money for my class membership, but forgot. Who do I send money too, or will I be able to do that down there?

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/24/10 10:55 PM

I'm not really sure. I'd imagine all boats will have three days. I pointed out to the board that a number of regattas are three days and that the format is very popular.

I'll get you the website for membership.

Oh my bad. Sorry im not a F16 sailor anymore. Thanks for the warm and fuzzy.

Specially coming from you.

I am referring to the title of the regatta and its a concern seeing how im a pretty active sailor at that club. So it was just a question, but seeing how im not a F16 sailor or class member I cant ask questions here.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/25/10 01:23 AM

Of course you can ask questions. The point is, this is where F16 sailors would come looking for information. The F16 Nationals only became part of the regatta last evening. Nothing has changed for A class, F18 and portsmouth. Unless you guys want to sail on Friday.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/25/10 02:37 PM

Robi, what does the GYC call that regatta? It used to be called the F16/A cat thingydoo, or some-such. We are certainly not trying to take over the world, just looking for a good place to hold a Nationals, and GYC is a great club with all the support staff and experience to do that.

So what would you have us call the regatta so we don't offend anyone?

GYC Multihull Regatta and F16 Nationals.

The registration link is up on Gilligan's site.

Please note on the registration page there are some fields for the race fee and meals that are not updated correctly yet.

The NOR will be posted shortly and we will change the registration page appropriately then.

Would the Nationals have the option of averaging one day like the Spring Fever format?

Reading the initial post I was under the impression that the regatta was strictly an F16 regatta now.

Robi,

Did you stop taking your meds? The opening post says very distictly that it is run in conjuction with the GYC Spring regatta, which is open to all cats.

Move on - Let's start talking about combining all the starts, at least we want Ding on ours. grin
Posted By: pgp

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/25/10 10:34 PM

No combined starts, not for Nationals. We're trying to increase the degree of rigor within the class.

Captain Bohan will be very happy to explain the rationale. wink

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/25/10 11:59 PM

I'll take Ding in our start, just as soon as I retrofit the Roo bars to the front of my boat!

I say we allow the Portsmouth High fleet to start with us...that way maybe I can feel fast coming off the line!

There are only two regatta's I generally want a separate start and you (Matt) don't go to the other one.

Combined or separate starts I'll happily and quietly be there and my rum is your rum.

Timbo, this is the second post you've mentioned me by name (yes I vist the other forum too... it was an accident) and I don't think I've seen you since Tradewinds 09, was it something I said? If it's because you have to mow your own lawn and put the wife in a better mood, that's not my fault. As soon as you get cleared to go back to work I'll take care of it.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/26/10 03:13 PM

I was just having fun with my favorite F18 guy! You know I love you and I know you can take a joke. But some can't so I pick on you.

So when are you going to man up and go F16 Uni against me, Terry and Pete? Anyone can drive an F18, we all know it's the crew doing all the work making you look good.

I got cleared to fly two weeks ago, have been -out straight- ever since, they scheduled my simulator re-qual training the exact same days as Tradewinds, Fri-Sun, then 2 days off and then a 5 day trip to Tel Aviv. I got home last Sunday after about 2 weeks on the road, as before the sim training I had to haul 3 horses and two kids up to Auburn, then stayed there to study for a couple days, then to ATL for the sims, back to Auburn, then to TLV.

It's great to get back to work, but now I miss the time off! I did get my Jan. vaction for next year so you will see me at Tradewinds then. Unless you sneak into one of our private F16 regattas.

You know I shouldn't even be talking about those here in public, so don't tell anyone I told you or showed you our secret handshake.

Oh, and the lawn is dead so you won't need to mow her, I mean it, until spring!

;^)

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/26/10 03:23 PM

Leave me out of this! grin Still. . .

Oh! You missed most of GC. There will be more Uni's than you, Tback and me.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 01/26/10 03:35 PM

Pete, I was talking about our local racing. I know there will be lots of Uni's at GYC Multihull event, I'm counting on it. Ding, you going to be one of them?

When's the next GYC local race? I need some practice.

Next month I've got two trips to Johannesburg, SA. Any sailing down there? It looks pretty dry on the map. I wish we were doing Capetown instead!

Just checked my Feb. schedule, I'll be in Jo-burg on the 20th of course. Dammit!

Well there's me, Kris, Alec and Lee as definate, Conni and Johnny 5 as hopeful. So far I think Alec and Lee are doing the Robbie Daniels clinic also. Last names have been left off to protect the innocent.

If measureing is required there will be four of the six listed above that will need it. Ed

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 03/05/10 04:20 PM

bump. We're just over a month away. What tuning, speed tips do you folks have?

My dagger board trunks suck, literally. They make a definite sucking sound, especially under spinnaker. Is this why Tback always beats me, or is it because I'm fat (this is your chance to talk a little pre-race trash)?

These boats have a whole bunch of lines supporting the spin pole. Is that significan windage? Should I invest in ultra slick, hi tech unobtainium lines?

Whaddaya think Ding? You know you want in this!
Posted By: Kris Hathaway

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 03/05/10 04:43 PM

How do you fix trunk suck? Better felt/carpet in the bottom of the trunk? Build up the bottom with glass/expoxy using the dagger as part of the mold? Both?

Is this with the boards lifted to avoid tripping under the chute? If so, the above is not a solution. So how would you solve it then? Flaps in the botton of the trunk?
Posted By: pgp

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 03/05/10 04:51 PM

The question is semi-serious. I'm assuming the sound comes from air flowing downward through the bottom of the slot. The situation occurred by too vigorous sanding of the boards. A littel gel coat on the boards should fix it.
Posted By: Timbo

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 03/05/10 07:29 PM

A little gel-coat will help. If they are loose at the top, you can buy some 1" wide velcro strips with sticky back at WalMart in the fabric/sewing area, cut to length and install the fuzzy strip in the top of the dagger slots, this will help keep the boards up when you raise them and slow the air sucking down there as well.

Pete, do they suck all of the time, or just sometimes?

I have found, if the boat is not balanced right(ie your weight not being in the correct place) going downwind I will hear gurggling myself...

To me, that usually means I have my weight to far BACK in light winds going downwind.

Again, that's what the gurgling sounds to me means...

"ballast" I believe is the word you're looking for JW. "Man-meat" would also be acceptable.

(edit)
We were crusin' at Tradewinds when the wind was up. Get Dan's bulk hanging off the transom and we could go like hell.

We really need to work on some stuff, but all in all we're a decent team, and sync up well. I think in the more moderate winds not requiring the hulk, I'll trap going downwind while helming. Should give us a nice middle gear.

Yes; I think we all know that. I believe John is sailing an F16.

Actually, I did NOT know that. I ASSumed it was a one-design event. That's why I was baffled at the question.

Yes, I am sailing F16.

So what can we expect for weather, temp wise?

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 03/24/10 02:10 AM

It's been about 10 below "average" this winter. I know, still about 50 warmer than Minn, but still...cold for us. This week it's supposed to be in the mid 70's, hopefully by Apr. 9 it -should- be in the low 80's, but it's been an unusually cold winter, so it could be in the 70's.

Awesome!

The only nice thing about the cold is that it kills off just about anything that can kill you. No scorpions, gators, snakes, or venomess ducks. That is if you manage to survive the cold yourself.

But the cold didn't kill the sharks, man-o-wars, or stingrays. We don't worry 'bout those wussy little fresh water pests around here.

There's a shark at the zoo. smile I'd expect full fecal expulsion if I saw a shark on the water. Coming from an agrarian backround we don't have too many sharks out in the corn/beans.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 03/24/10 03:55 PM

Here's a question: If I were to sail a boat that is almost a F16, but not quite would you, (either the racers at the event, or the RC), allow me to race with the F16's if it meant getting another boat there? Score me for each race, then at the end of the event DSQ me?

I've still got an FXone sitting in the basement, and a couple that would probably be interested in sailing the Viper. I could just call it the FXonesix. grin

For a club race that would be a non issue: absolutely, no problem. For a national, well, that's harder. Of course you can ask for the activation of the special rule:
Quote

6.1 Grandfathering of boats into the open Open Formula 16 class

6.1 The head of a local Formula 16 class organisation may give dispensation (called grandfathering) to a particular design or class and allow them to become part of the Open Formula 16 class under the following conditions.

6.1.1 The design may not have hulls longer than 5,30 mtr.(17ft 4 inch.) [FX-1: 5.25m]

6.1.2 The design must have a rated jib sail area which is less than 4,25 sq.mtr. and more than 2,75 sq. mtr. (this rule does not apply to single handed setups) [Doesn't apply to solo boats]

6.1.3 Both the SCHRS (ISAF) and Texel rating of the design must be equal to or "slower" than the rating assigned to the Formula 16 class. [Check: FX-1 solo has a 1.017 rating]

6.1.4 When grandfathered, the designs are allowed to race against fully compliant Formula 16 designs in declared "Open Formula 16" races.

So in practice you local F16 Association (aka the US one) can allow you to compete in a FX-1 if they think it is appropriate. You will end up with two set of results: a F16 result with your boat excluded and an "open F16 result".

No. The proposal submitted by the U.S.F16 Class association to GYC specifically calls for a separate start for F16s who are members of the U.S.F16 class association.

The FX-1 would sail in the open class as would any F16s who chose not to join the class association or do not have valid class certification.

Pete- Will anyone be available to measure boats the few days prior to the event? I believe the training camp will be run out of the GYC, and my boat will be there.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 04/10/10 11:03 AM

Sandra/Jamie and Zach/Matt are both on Vipers.

We're tryin' to get on it! In the 4th race we were first to the windward mark, and damn near 1st at the gate. Then we had a bit of trouble getting the kite to come down and capsized. Many explatives followed, managed to pull a 8th out on that one. In the 5th race we were OCS, dipped back around the committee boat, and still scraped a 7th up. Big wind with a heavy crew the Viper is an absolute freight train going to weather. Extremely impressive in that respect, we were untouchable going uphill.

The first race was started on time, and with less than a 1/3rd of the participants there, (including Dan and I), I'm hoping that one will get thrown out. The extra 24pts is killing us, and the light air.....

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 04/10/10 11:39 AM

The facebook page of Kris Hathaway shows a Falcon F16, is that also the boat he is sailing as the nationals ?

If so then the boat distribution is as follows :

22 crews participating
34 sailors in total
12 2-up crews
10 1-up crews
10 Viper F16's
7 Blade F16's
3 Falcon F16's
2 Taipan F16's

The RC started a couple of minutes late as it was - there is no way that race should be thrown out. When there is a start time posted, and the RO says quite clearly at the skippers' meeting that he is starting on time, you'd better get a move on.

And yes - the SquidPig was hauling A$$ uphill in the breeze.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 04/11/10 09:38 AM

Four races yesterday, the first two in very good wind with several crashes, then it died out and while it did, lots of big wind shifts. The last race was a frustrating drifter up at A mark with no laylines, just tack and hope for a puff!

We started the first race at 10am, in 18+ gusts. Check out the windspeed charts for yesterday, look closly at 2pm. It went from NE at 18-25 to NW at 4-6. http://www.bcbaywatch.com/

I think the top 3 remain the same. Last day is today, got to go watch the news to see what the wind is -supposed- to be...

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 04/12/10 01:16 AM

It is all over, including the shouting. I am comfortable in a cushy hotel room with my family waiting for a 6AM flight back to LA. It was a pretty weekend and the wind was very challenging, but PRO Fairlie Brinkly did his normal outstanding job of course management - we got thirteen races in three days with highly variable conditions.

Some notable items:

  • 1. GYC is great. I love that club and they always have a very warm smile for catamaran fleets. Great food for the dinner Saturday night and plenty of volunteers on the RC.

    2. Give the SquidPig it's due. Karl has the loudest truck in the northern hemisphere and he could trade insults with that stupid dog hand puppet. That anchored monohull never had a chance.

    3. Gordon Isco is a terrific friend. Many thanks for the use of his spare room again and for sharing some fine rum, un-freaking-believable stories and advice.

    4. Matt By-God McDonald never, ever, ever gives up. You can roll him, hole his boat, flip him on the finish line, or snap his rudder - he and super-crew Gina just keep coming. He can start four minutes late and finish top five... at least twice in one regatta. If he'd been sent to Baghdad, we'd have finished up years ago. The guy is a tsunami. Hats off.

    5. Taylor and Matt will be the best team on a catamaran in the World someday... soon.

    6. Jill knows everything. Yes, everything. Don't question - just go with it.

    7. Robbie Daniel is a good friend, coach and mentor. Tear his big toe off and he'll still be there for you. Even if you step on it later.

    8. Go Pete! Thanks Pete and the rest of the excom for putting together the first F16 Nationals in the US. That first step is a hard one. This effort came off very nicely from a competitor's perspective.

So now, for me, it is bedtime stories for the kid and a hot shower for me. I think there are two Aleve in my immediate future.

Cheers

Its naturally that loud. Being a bad butt pickup took some coin.

Insult the Comic dog ain't got **** on me.

I've got nothing about the moored boat, except massive amounts of disappointment. We had 2 dnf's, and (I think) 4 dns' thanks to Spinlock producing two junk cleats. The last race of the whole friggin event, we're first around the windward mark, we're first through the gate, we're four or five boat lengths ahead of the boys with a leg and a half to go and while Dan's throwing me off the boat, I throw it all away trying to add a foot to our lead. Nice.

BTW- Dan and I are about 385lbs. We felt it in the light stuff......

Great event, too far away at 1700 miles, but I've managed to drive to Florida 4 times in the last 18 months, so I'm sure I'll pile a few more miles on the ol' smoke wagon and make the trip again.

Where's next years event.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 04/12/10 02:40 AM

I raced (crewed for) Riley McDonald this weekend. By all measures it was a fantastic weekend.

Can't say enough for GYC, the race committee and the chef/service help at the club for dinner ... all OUTSTANDING! If you've never been to an event hosted by GYC you're missing out.

Racing with Riley was a blast. She's a trooper ... just like my "uni" crew ... never talks back (at least on the water).

Friday night she gave me strict instructions--"Don't get drunk at the party!". We were sharing a house with the McDonald's so when I got back I "played" like I was toasted. "Mr. Terry you're DRUNK!" HAHAHAH, I got you!

Saturday night my wife and I got back to the house before Riley, she asked my wife if I was in bed sleeping .... A freakin' bed check! A BED CHECK for gods sake!!!

Anyway, she did great and we had all kinds of conditions, from floaters to med-hvy air with gusts. She's a good driver and is looking for a 14-15 yr old hunky boy for a crew.

We capsized one time all weekend, by demand from Mr. Seth because he said too .... we did it before the first race ... HAHAHA take that Seth.

Thanks for putting this together Pete! Now you know why nobody wants to be class President! You should have come out when Ed was on the beach fixing his boat, then you could have handed the torch to him!

And thanks to all the "Beach Patrol" provided by the GYC (John and Chuck?) who were great about getting our beach wheels after launch and upon returning, helping step and unstep masts, moving trailers around, etc.
It's nice to have that kind of help when racing Uni!

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 04/12/10 04:33 PM

This was a really fun time! We had a bit of everything as far as conditions go and although we are light, those were our worst finishes. Sailing is sailing and that goes for all conditions even the hated (by me) heavy and punchy winds. We had to work for everything this weekend and we are hurting today; a good hurt. We are looking forward to F-16 Nationals next year in Maryland.

As usual we had great sailing with great friends and for those of you that couldn't join us, make it work in 2011. You won't be sorry.

Can anyone send me the results? I'm home now and will be able to update the f16 website. And I also want to know the results! :-)

Next weekend our racing season is starting finally! After reading this and the Aussie regatta I really can't wait to get out and race!

Check out the F16 site, results online! :-)

If any of you that were at the regatta want to send me a text to get along with the results, just do so. Maybe also including the next possible venue?

we should take note that Tback and Riley stopped to give assistance during the race. One of the younger crew had gotten separated from his boat so T&Riley rendered assistance without redress, though I'm sure it would have been given.

Good job T.

Re: F16 National Championship Regatta - 04/15/10 10:14 PM

Hey, how about the show put on by the kids?! A 15yr. old with a 17yr. old crew kicked all our butts!!

And Riley McDonald's obviously got good gene's too! That was her first race and Terry had her driving! Nice Job Riley and Terry!

And how about an Honorable Mention to the -only- crew to complete all 13 races?

Nice Job Andy Humpries and crew!

As you can see by the results, there were lots of DNF's, mostly for broken stuff, I had to return to the beach twice, once for a busted trap line and once for a missing rudder!
