I receied a mail on the launch of a Nacra F16, but was not able to see any specs on its weight, is this a true F16? Any pricing info available?

Looking at the dagger-boards the leading edge tappers toward the tip. This is counter intuitive to me, where in the old days the leading edge was straight. Any thoughts?

Straight trailing edges are less likely to get damaged in the case.

anyone even seen one live?
Posted By: daniel_t Re: Nacra F16 - 11/03/11 01:27 AM
Anyone heard of how much they are supposed to cost?
I heard there are 4 or 5 going to Minnesota.

Just in time for Ice Boating Season!
Karl, strap it on, they're coming for you!
Oh I doubt there's any coming to minnesota. No nacra dealer here, and not much market for it here either, (which is flat out kiss!ng strange as we have more shoreline than any other state in the lower 48).

puddles don't count
There's a lot of water here.

The ice in your rummies doesn't count.

It is the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" after all.
Great for duck hunting and walleye fishing!
Oh, and ice hockey! Eh?
Go you Golder Gophers!

Cool sail number in that video.
Where is Karl???? Don't watch. Your head may explode!!! They are doing it again. Double trap with spin!!!! LOL
I've never seen anyone do it with a Goodall mast, down boy!
Posted By: drew584 Re: Nacra F16 - 12/12/11 08:19 AM
I did it with a goodall mast last weekend 2 days in a row and have done it several times previously. The mast has never been an issue. And I have done this with anywhere from 125 kgs to 155 or so kgs.
Twin trapped under kite on a Taipan with a Taipan stick (lower hounds) about 160kg on board.

Chris P and I did it a few years back at Tradewinds (and won)... Taylor was following us the entire time yelling that our mast was about to break... I think he just wanted us to slow down.
Done properly, they can handle it. That said, we have also broken a mast doing it (okay so it was Chris and Dan... weighing 100kg each ;-). Officially I wouldn't recommend it.... Much like you aren't supposed to drive 200 Mph...... still can be fun though

I'll be in Thailand, will try to go for a sail and report back

Thanks Jeff, looking forward to hear from you. I've ordered mine but it'll takes 6 months for delivery. Really want to know how it sails.
Posted By: Jeff.Dusek Re: Nacra F16 - 02/03/12 01:56 PM
Haven't sailed it yet, but in person the boat looks awesome. Gunnar and Coen are both sailing them here- can't think of better test pilots!
I hear its an Infusion mast, (shorter obviously). what the F is nacra thinking there?!

Karl, you are aware you are an AHPC dealer and you're dumping on another providers product, right?
You're right Dave.
Dear NACRA,
I'm sorry for questioning the wisdom of putting a stiff butt mast on a little light boat.
Thanks,
Karl Brogger
(edit)- Ironically "Lil' Kim - Magic Stick" came up on itunes as I hit post. Made me laugh.

I don't see the problem with Karl's post here.
Maybe if he were a Nacra dealer, dumping on a Nacra product?

Any boats sold in the U.S. yet? Florida?
Posted By: Wouter Re: Nacra F16 - 02/09/12 07:22 PM
Maybe the infusion mast is not such a bad choice ? It is by no means a hobie tiger mast (and placed on the FX-one after being cut to length)

I know of one guy up in New England who has ordered one, but said it won't be delivered until later in the spring.
Here's a Nacra F16 video for you:

That's my fear is it'll be like the FXone. You're right its probably no where as stiff as the tiger section
Could be just the same shape and a thinner wall? There is a lot voodoo that goes into extruding aluminium, so maybe a tweak in how its done yields a thinner wall with the same tooling.

Re: Nacra F16 - 02/09/12 10:16 PM
The Cathouse dealer newsletter in October said one had been pre-sold up our way (Great Lakes).

Okay, I'll play the heretic. An F16, is an F16, is an F16. Performance comes from the meat attached to the tiller.

An F16, is an F16, is an F16.
Pete, I'm sure that is very true for the likes of you and me. I loose so much time from bad starts, bad tacks, and bad mark roundings, that I expect that the moderate gains from a particular design would be irrelevant, even if I did know how to tweak the rig to maximize those gains.
:-)

You're no fun! We haven't heard anyone raling* on the virtues of unobtanium or foils in along time.
Anything truly earth shattering in this new boat? If it's better, in what ways is it better?
*I can't find this word in any of the several dictionaries I've consultated, so you'll have to accept it as a nonce.

Well, I didn't get a chance to sail the boat, but did get to talk to Gunnar and Coen about it. They are very happy with the platform, but said the main needed some work which was hurting them in light breeze. Some very close racing amongst the Vipers and Nacras here in Thailand, should be great for the F16 class in general!
Posted By: Gilo Re: Nacra F16 - 02/10/12 11:17 AM
Jeff,
On pics the fat head in the main looks bigger than what you have on the Falcon/Viper. Correct? You saw it in real.

Posted By: Jeff.Dusek Re: Nacra F16 - 02/10/12 11:46 AM
The main is very square up high, looks very much like the main on an F20c. Honestly, I'm not sure if it is "fatter" than the Viper. The sails being used this week will definitely be refined, we aren't seeing the final package by any means.
Posted By: pgp Re: Nacra F16 - 02/10/12 12:20 PM
I have to say this is yet more validation of the F16! I think we're here to stay guys, of course I felt that way from the moment I saw the Taipan 4.9.
Kudos to all you folks that had the vision!
there is at least 2 coming to Pensacola don't know if they are sold yet.
Posted By: tshan Re: Nacra F16 - 02/10/12 08:39 PM
I just have to chuckle a bit ..... Nacra F16s at Quietwater Beach.
I guess the fad isn't over ...
Posted By: pgp Re: Nacra F16 - 02/10/12 08:47 PM
roflmao!
Posted By: pgp Re: Nacra F16 - 02/21/12 02:32 PM
The F16 was previously dismissed by some as a fad boat and would soon disappear but that was a couple of years ago.
hence the joke "xyz is just a FAD"
Posted By: tshan Re: Nacra F16 - 02/23/12 07:23 PM
Btw, I think the NACRA F16 is a great looking boat and that the NACRA dealer in Pensacola Beach is fantastic. The dealer support in PB has provided the platform for a great catamaran racing scene over many, many years. The racing scene there would not be what it is without Key Sailing and the many people involved over the years. Kudos to them.
I am glad to see NACRA in the F16 class. I wasn't so sure that would happen 5 or 6 years ago.
Posted By: pgp Re: Nacra F16 - 02/23/12 07:30 PM
So, we'll be seeing you on the water soon?
Posted By: tshan Re: Nacra F16 - 02/24/12 02:46 PM
I was thinking about getting a beater Stiletto 27 and gunkholing around the NC sounds a little bit. I have access to a cabin on Albermarle Sound with a place to store it - about an hour from my house.
I'd love to have a F16 again and will at some point, just not sure when - maybe when my kids age out of "traditional" sports. They have been using traditional sports to meet new friends in NC.
