what about the Mosquito as a 16 hp? - 08/16/01 05:16 PM

just thinking down here we have also the Mosquito..
specs are length 4.9 m
width 2185mm (add racks?)
unrigged 55 kg (tortured ply) this could still be under the proposed weight ?
mki 12.5 m2
mkll 14.9 m2

web site is http://members.net-tech.com.au/tim_shepperd/vmca/

I believe they are looking to increase the rig hight and also looking to put a genacker on the platform.. perhaps a few mods and its a goer?

Can you contact them Steward ? - 08/16/01 08:45 PM

Texel on the number given on their homepage give rating of 108. A bigger rig could well do the trick.

Stewart-
Looks like a pretty good match except perhaps for the weight? But then it should be easy to add weight IF it turns out the "rest of us" need it! How's the VYC for the Mosquito (Mk II) vs the Taipan? Probably the best way to tell if it's a good fit!

Kirt you should eat them as they stand.. racks and a taller rig may make it interesting.. Currently VYC 74 for a T4.9
The VYC for Mossies is 84 for all.. They have a sloop (2 up) and a cat rig (one up)
Actually look like a mini Tornado..

Folks,
Both the Cobra and the Mosquito make it under the rule.
I've owned both in my time.
The only issues are the Cobra is a couple of kilos heavy, although it can be home built light enough and the Mossie a couple light.
The other issue as already pointed out is they are both slow compared to the other F16HP boats.
In the mid 80's I added a 8.5 metre wing mast to the Cobra with a bigger jib (increase of about 50sq ft sail) this took the sail area up to around 200sq ft. I wasn't happy with the results but I suppose had I followed thru with the development things would of improved. Still I don't think either with an upgraded sail plan would match a Taipan.

There is also an issue regarding the strength of the Mossies beams for the additional loadings.
I think they would both be better in the one up config.than two up beacuse of hull bouyancy with the additional rig loading.
I'm all for including both of them and perhaps the problem that I see can be overcome.

Re: what about that Mosquito spi? - 08/17/01 12:48 PM

Phill-
Good to see you back posting! Did you check out the spi bag on the Mossie page? Interesting to me, I might just have to try something like this out on my T rather than the snuffer. LOOKS like the windage and weight would be less and weight also kept further aft. If you did the pole and hoop in carbon you could do them all together. I also noted they did not "stabilise" the pole via wires/lines at the bridle tangs.
What do you think?

Kirt,
Unfortunately I've not been able to access the Mossie page.
Maybe their server is down.

I'd like to see the setup, it sounds as though it could be like one of the designs I'm working on.

Nothing like learning from the experience of others.

I've also been working on a home grown version of the Marstrom shooter. I love the way it eats the halyard as the kite goes up and when you retrieve the halyard it rolls up the kite.
I'll keep trying and hopefully I'll get to check out their setup.
It's great news the Mossies are considering a kit.
