I am new to the forum and I bought kilkennys USA300. I am interested in putting a furler on the Taipan 4.9 jib. Not sure it is necessary to use a Capricorn furler or maybe the harken furler they use on a hooter? Furlers I have used on dinghys have the forestay sewn in the jib. How would work for a jib that is raised up and down with a halyard with a zipper pocket? Anyone done this? Thanks

Should work fine - I used to sail a Tiger with a furler and that had a zipper pocket. The only issue is with battens in the jib. I don't know if the Taipan has any, but I think all the new F16 sails do.

Do you use a top swivel on the halyard? How do you incorporate the bottom furler with the forestay?

Yes swivels at the top. However I would suppose you'd still need to be on the beach for the tuning differences (i.e. sloop vs. cat rigged). <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

The bottom furler forms part of the forestay: attaches to the bridles underneath, and above attaches to one of those plate things with lots of holes in it (sorry, don't know the correct name). The forestay attaches to this, the multiple holes allowing you to adjust mast rake. The tack of the jib then attaches to this plate with a shackle, so the whole lot rotates when you furl it.

Does the top swivel attach to the forestay? So the forestay complete turns? And the halyard goes along for the ride? Eventhough both are inside the zippered pocket? Thanks Andrew

Yes - have a look at http://www.hobiecat.com/support/pdfs/tigerassy.pdf

With the F18 class dumping the requirement for furlers, you should be able to pick up some second hand bits fairly easily.

That was perfect. Thank you so much for your help. If your ever across the pond near northern New Mexico let me know. My wife and I would love to go sailing with you. Thanks Andrew.
