It amazes me that you people claim you want to get more women involved in sailing. That you want to get more kids involved in sailing. And yet on this forum I am seeing the F word used more and more.

Why the F--- do you guys do that on a forum that may be read by women and children?

Do you want your young child, who is reading about sailing, to ask you, "What does WTF mean?" Or, "What does F--- mean?"

Or, if they already know that (unfortunately), why would you want to reinforce that as being acceptable?

And, of course, you all must know that many women find the word offensive to us (even though most of us have been forced to become desensitized to it).

Using that word, no matter how you try to disguise it, demeans the sport and demeans you personally. Sailing is not supposed to be a good-old-boys club, but you make it sound like that.

If you guys are all as highly educated as you seem, I'm sure you can come up with some better vocabulary to express your displeasure about things.

End of rant.

Someone has to say it, so it might as well be me.

Mary, I think, doesn't like to censor anything. It's a slippery slope. I agree.

In defense of offensive language, it offers an insight into the personality, perhaps the character of the speaker. Or, it may simply indicate the degree of emotion the speaker is feeling. It is succinct.

I'm not a parent, but if a child were to ask me what this particular word meant, I would say it's a bad word grown-ups use when they are angry or upset. If they're old enough, in the parents opinion, why not just tell them?! This is not the only place they will hear such language!

But, (why am I going here? I must be an idiot!) The objection is just too pc for my liking. Ladies, or others, I use the F word! I happen to like it. It has come to occupy it's own special niche in our language. No other expletive, or eloquence, quite matches the frustration the word usually conveys.

So, if my language is too offensive for you, use the ignore button, or just ban me from the forum all together.

I've had it with pc.

Sure we can, but, No. 1, you guys will keep coming up with new euphemisms;

and No. 2, then it will say "censored," which is basically the same as saying it, because people can guess the word from the context of the sentence, so it still goes into your brain, just as though it were actually in print;

and #3, would you take pride in using a word that has to be censored?

You guys ever hear George Carlin's explanation of the F word? Great stuff I think.

It's just a word, and if I said it as much as my wife does, I'd be fired. There are times however, when no other word will fit the situation, and racing sailboats seems to bring us to those situations quite often. The S and F word seem to need to be said quite a bit while racing! Also, I thought this was a board for sailors, what ever happend to "Swears like a Sailor..." Or are we now going to be unichs?

All in all, I try not to use it here, because as Mary says, it is a public domain and we don't want to offend anyone, but as I said, there are times when no other word fits. Still, I have never seen it typed out in it's entirety here, just the "F" abreviation. I suppose we could use "Noodle"...

My favorite non-swear words? Cheese and Crackers, Gosh Golly and Darn it all to Heck. But when your boat gets T-boned and your sinking, I doubt that's what's going to come out of your mouth.

Well, it wouldn't come out of your mouth unless somebody had put it in your head in the first place. So why do we have to perpetuate the trend?

True, but I can't see myself screaming, "EXPLATIVE DELETED!" I don't know the "origins" of curse words but thousands of years ago, obviously someone had a bad day, and then it caught on...

Or not! I think expletives derive from the "natural" uncultured personality. Culture being a generally agreed upon set of mores. The dark side is that culture is unquestionably a control mechanism. Whoever establish the mores, establishes class structure and controls society. Hence, a never ending battle between society and the individual.

Personally, I always feel better after I've turned the air "blue". Being a rebel at heart, it helps that the behavior is anitsocial.

BLEH! werent sailors back in the day outcast? I am talking about the 1200's 1300's etc etc. I love the word and I use it all the time. To me it gives emphasis on what I am trying to say. I am sure Rick can relate being a prior Coastie, we are really good at using this word and I mean all the time!

What is not using this word going to put us all at a higher level pedestal? [censored] that, ide rather be a pirate and use the word all the time.

I am with PETE on this 100%

And yes I have taken teens out on my boat and we had such a blast. I dont remember if the word was used or not, who cares. What happens on the boat, stays on the boat.

Plus CATSAILOR.com is probably .000001% of the internet. Censoring the word F#$k will only bother some members and not do much. I would like to know how many kids or youths and women actually read this forum and actually take offense of the use of the word. How about we try to be world heroes and censor the rest of the filth off the internet[/sarcasm]

Have you received complaints about the use of this word?

Most of the forum softwares allow you to replace each word being censored with another specific word (it doesn't have to be "censored"...you could use "heck" to replace "F". or "Why in the World" to replace WTF or something.

While single-handing I may express myself with bad language, but never in the company of women or children. And I certainly think this forum is of the latter situation.

I can't imagine someone has to use such language here.., after all, your boat can't sink on the forum.

It doesn't happen often, but I agree with Mary, there are better ways to express yourself and not scare away women and youth.
Thanks,
Rick

I wish the "F" word was used less. It is overused and starting to lose its power and become ambiguous. I dread the day it sounds like "... and then this port tack mother-nicer cut across my bows and I T-boned his nicin-butt...." Lets all pull together on this. We need at least another 30 years.
A word only has the power we allocate it. In German, reproductive terms are mild offence, silly; stupid, butt or pig are more offensive.
What is wrong with neutralizing a word's power to young kids right off.
"... F is a word for mating that humans use to shock others because it used to be considered something dirty that shouldn't be talked about, so by using it, it was rebelious and threatening. It still is a powerfull word, but being overused, is becoming less so. Use only on special occassions...." Help save the Words.

Correct. The UBB software that this forum uses can have a set of <badword> -> <replacement word>.

What happens on the boat, stays on the boat.

That's like saying "What happens in our home stays in our home." But it doesn't.

And have we had complaints? Only one from somebody who said it was too bad that he could not let his child (who was really into sailing) read our forums because of the language used. One is one too many. And how many people have not bothered to mention it to us and just don't let their kids read the forums?

If you want to use a word like that in your normal life and work, fine, but why do you have to use it on a forum where you are not exactly in a stressful or life-threatening situation?

May be all sailors should learn to speak Welsh as there are no swear words in our vocabulary.

My thoughts exactly. Doesn't anybody sail anymore? Everyone has so much time to think about these things.

If anyone feels that it is a problem with cat sailors, try hanging around keelboat sailors for a while.

I don't think the swear words need to be used on this site or any site. You can't just walk away when you have already read the word. I guess I can just not read any post from the people who swear a lot on this site. Swearing to me shows lack of education, lack of one's control, a lower class person. If you went for a job interview or a first date would you use the word ? No it would just show that you were lower class or uneducated. Why use it on this forum ? Do you not have any respect for the others that use this forum. The dictionary says the word is slang/vulgar: have sexual intercourse with. Does this mean when you say ---- you that means you want to have sex with that person or when a boat hits you and you say ----, you want to have sex with that boat

I agree my kids keep asking me what does the word “funk” or WTF stand for and I’m really getting tired of trying to explain. Then there’s the “S” word for “shoot” do you folks really want to gun down each other like you did with the Indians or what?

Well, you learn something new everyday. I thought funk meant "the blues", a depressed state.

Instead, my dictionary says, ". . . cower in fear".

Go figure. Gives "funky music" a whole new meaning.

It's not a problem with cat sailors or keelboat sailors or any kind of sailors.

It's just a matter of being rude, disrespectful and ignorant in your choice of words in company of mixed genders and ages OR in a public forum.

Well, the migration routes of the Monarch butterfly are threatened. And, we've had to make a beach off limits so that the Golden Plover can rest.

All very important stuff.

It's not a problem with cat sailors or keelboat sailors or any kind of sailors.

It's just a matter of being rude, disrespectful and ignorant in your choice of words in company of mixed genders and ages OR in a public forum.

If it's A public forum, there's room for debate. But, if it's YOUR public forum, then, indeed, it is a matter of courtesy.

Why didn't you say that in the first place! I wouldn't smoke in your living room, I won't cuss on your forum!

Gotta go to a b'day party!

Is it actually public? Can't any of us be booted at any time, without any real reason. I think of public as tough "cookie" you can't boot me out. There's a bill going through the house in MN banning smoking in bars/resturants. On one hand I like that I won't have to smell it when I go out and murder brain cells by the fistfull. Yet its a crushing blow to rights of property owners, with the exception of Muni's, bars are privately owned and operated. So next time somebody drops a colourfull explitive boot em' out, or deal with it. Heck doesn't replace the word for a warm place of screaming souls, its just a PC way to say it. They are one in the same. Using euphemisms only bastardize's and destroys our language. And no, that is not a swear word in this context.

I'm boatless.

I agree with those who say go sail more. I missed out on all the F-word discussion because I was out crewing in the PCCC Spring Series. The wind was blowing like [noodle].

In Ireland we use the word feck a fair bit - it's a mild form of the word To feck something, can be to throw it, to steal it, or you just say "Well feck it anyway", if you are giving out about something.

BUT, I have noticed this for some time (No offence Mary) If things are quiet on the forum, business being business, Mary will start a thread to get the numbers up, "What's the deal with the F Word", Sailing for absolutely everybody", "How many regattas...", "Why have a multihull..", etc. As we say in Ireland, "More power tcha Mary"

If any of you bothered to read my initial post when I started this thread, you are well aware that nobody said you can't use whatever language you want, as much as you want. I was merely expressing my opinion. However, some of the reactions are very interesting.

Dermot, when are you coming over here to sail? It was only about 27C here today and with a nice 10 knots. I took a neighbor out for a sail. He had never been on a cat, just his sunfish, so I let him drive from the wire. I won't tell you his exact words but he said sailing the cat on one hull was FFantastic!

Now he wants me to find him a used Hobie 18 or Prindle. Anyone got one for cheap?

I did send him to this web site Classified section and I'm giving him one of my old issues of Catamaran Sailor. Hopefully I will soon have someone to race with.

Thank you, Dermot. I have occasionally done that, but it never occurred to me that it had anything to do with business. It is just that sometimes the forum gets boring to me with all the techno-talk. You guys apparently don't want women on the forum -- but I do. So sometimes I try to come up with topics of more general interest.

In the case of the sailing video, a friend from Ohio sent it to me, and I couldn't remember if I had seen it on the forum, so I just thought I would share it. Sorry.

In the case of the F word thread, I just felt the need to vent about it. And from reading the responses on this thread, I think some men don't realize that many women (at least all the women I know) consider the word to mean rape. It is a term that suggests violence, usually against women.

From the Urban Dictionary (which would provide a more recent use of the word):

1. The universally recognized "F word"
2. N. Implying complete and utter confusion
3. N. a really stupid person
4. V. To procreate
5. adj. Can be used to modify any word for more passion
6. Int. Expresses disgust
7. Int. Expresses complete suprise and joy
8. adv. Can be used to make a command more urgent

I knew somebody would come up with things like that. Those are the ways in which some people think they are using the word, and I'm sure it makes them feel better about it.

Doesn't change the perception that women have and the reality of what the word really means.

An expletive is not going to keep women and children off the forum. It will not scare them away. Please, please, introduce me to these people who would be so puritan as to be personally offended by an articulation. But maybe I'm just another desensitized American youth.

I'm more insulted by the implication that this word is unique to adult male culture than I would be by it's use.

Every second word on the chat rooms and Myspace webpages that my son frequents seems to be a so-called expletive. Use of such adjectives/nouns in these forums doesn't seem to be gender specific.

Is the everyday use of expletives a reflection on the general decline in language skills across the english speaking world, especially amongst generation X and Y's? I suggest it is.

I'd also suggest that the sensibility of very few females would be affronted by such language in the 2000's.

I don't know about the US, but the f-word is widely used in most forms of media in Australia, including free to air TV after 2100 hrs, films, plays and live comedy.

Famous Scottish comdian, Billy Connolly, loves using the f-word. Rodney Rude and Kevin Bloody Wilson are great Oz comedians, that come to mind, who made the use of expletives a key part of their shows, but never in an offensive way to any particular gender, race or creed.

I think it is all a matter of context.

The etymology of the f-word can be found at &searchmode=none.]http://ww...arch=[censored]&searchmode=none.

If men don't think it is an offensive word to women, why is it that when a man is talking in mixed company and he inadvertently says the F word, he immediately looks at the women present and apologizes by saying, "Excuse my French"?

Wow! You've got your man hater goin' pretty strong!

If I say "[censored]" I'm now a rapist? I'm "guilty" of a crime of violence against women?

If I say something technical, I'm trying to keep women off the forum?

On the new Battlestar Galactica (great show btw), in the future, they've invented the word "Frack" so they can say it on TV.

Mary,
I've read with interest this thread and I must tell you I've never heard that from the woman's viewpoint this word means rape or violence against woman. That has given me pause.
My father passed away 20 years ago but I can hear him clearly telling me "try to live your life as a gentleman. Never use language that you wouldn't want to say to your mother to her face.".
I don't think I ever have used it on this forum (and probably wouldn't anyway) but I think I'll try to wipe it from my vernacular completely. Just because.....

Yes, good show, I am surprised that it is as good as it is. As for "frack" it gets on my nerves because everytime they say it I know it is them not saying the real word. I would just assume they say the real word.

We say "Excuse my French" because we hate the French, not the women present, oh, and we would like to rape the French, obviously.

So Mary, when you are suddenly subjected to a bad situation, what do you say? Everyone says something.

In most situations I say, oh my gosh, or oh my god, or doggone it, or for heaven's sake, or, golly, or darn it, gee whiz, or for Pete's sake, or oh shoot, or jeez or heck. If I am REALLY stressed, I will say, Jesus or even Jesus Christ. And if I am REALLY, REALLY stressed, I will say, "Oh, [censored]." (Uh-oh, I just realized Rick probably has that word censored. s-h-i-t. I don't know why that would be censored, because I don't see anything wrong with that, having grown up on a poultry farm with a lot of chicken, uh, manure.)

Now see? You would probably offend quite a few Christians using that JC language in their presence. They might rather you used the F word, might be less offensive to their savior too.

I can honestly say, as a man, I have NEVER used the F word to mean Rape, and I cannot ever recall any other man using it in that context. If they are talking about rape, they usually say "raped", not F'd.

On the new Battlestar Galactica (great show btw), in the future, they've invented the word "Frack" so they can say it on TV.

(as well as a few other strange cultural inventions)

You ever watch Firefly? They do all the swearing in Chiniese. Kinda funny after a while.

I liked "felgercarp" from the original Galactica. That isn't a substitute for anything. . . that I know of.

Now you've hit the nail on the head! I'm more than a little insulted by anyone who associates me with the act of rape, no matter how remote that association might seem. Rape, as a heinous and violent act, is in a class by itself. Think about it a moment. The resulting physical injury is often, not always, minimal. The psycological damage is all but irreparable! I would not wish that on my worst enemy!

To be clear, the assumption that rape is less heinous to a man than a woman is insulting and erroneous.

As for the JC language, the last time I was accosted for using that term, my response was the following.

"You can't possibly know if I was cursing or praying since you know neither my heart nor my mind. I'm disinclined to explain either."

I'm much more offended by JC or GD than F; however, I have found myself in many occasions where I have said them all. Sometimes all at once! It's not something I enjoy doing or am proud of, but it happens. I try to stay out of situations that would cause me to say them. Sometimes that is not possible.

Good grief, Tim! I would never use those words in the presence of another human being.

And that is the problem. Men use the word casually and publicly in a whole variety of contexts. It is the word itself that is intrinsically offensive, no matter how it is being used.

I'm not trying to change anybody's language habits, but I thought it might be good to raise awareness about how it affects a lot of women -- and also how it can affect other men's opinion of you.

You will all be happy to know that I am done with this thread. Actually, I didn't even expect a response to my original post.

I think it is well past time that women became aware of how they affect men.

As a nurse, I work in a world populated and dominated by women. Trust me on this. Women do not have a monopoly on ethics, empathy for the needs of others, or simple honesty.

Nursing is always hard, always stressful and is neither masculine nor feminine in its nautre. Men compose only 5% of the total workforce. Yet it is said of nurses, by nurses; "they sometimes eat their young." Do not presume that phrase was coined by a man.

And spare me the poor, abused little woman routine. It is old and tired.

Mary doesn't speak for all women, and certainly not for me.

I'm WAY more offended by men who leave the toilet seat up than by men who cuss. That seat-up thing is just disgusting and shows an abject lack of manners.

This sig would be something witty, but the censors are against that.

A conversation between a young bull and and old bull;

The two bulls are standing on top of a hill looking down on the herd, the young bull says to the old bull, "let's rush down there and noodle one of those cows!" The old bull stood back and said," hold an a second young one, let's go down there and noodle all of them!"

I love the word noodle, I use it all the time, in front of women and even noodlin' children! Noodle this, noodle that, noodle me, noodle you! Noodle off, macaroni head!

I hope I haven't noodled myself by posting this noodlin' response to this silly noodlin' thread.

I noodlin' love all you guys!

By the way, I have a noodlin' ARC 21 for sail, new tramps, trailer, box, noodlin' wheels, and a custom made gin pole.

No noodlin' offense intended.

Sincerely.

Arbo06, or Max Downhaul a some of you me know me.

Thank you, Tami. Finally, a voice of reason and perspective from a WOMAN. This thread has finally been hijacked, thank goodness. So now we can discuss toilet seats.

So, you think it is disrespectful to women for a man not to put down the toilet seat? Personally, I find it helpful when he leaves it up, because then I can see that I need to clean it.

I've never understood that - I mean, if I can check that the seat is down before I need it, why can't women?

Yeah, why do they always leave it DOWN, when they KNOW we need it UP?!

And, my wife leaves the seat down but the lid UP! If you are going to put the seat down, put the lid down when you are done so I don't drop my comb in it! Geezz...

I'm totally with you, Jake. It's definitely an equality thing. Like when a guy gets up in the middle of the night with diarrhea and sits down and his butt ends up in the water because he left the seat up and expected his SO to have put the seat down...The seat situation works both ways.

I think I feel a song coming on.

Look at it this way:

For the most part, four things get done on the potty: Women whiz, they crap, men whiz, they crap. 3/4 of those things need the seat down. Ergo, seat down is the majority of what gets done on the potty.

FWIW, my house sees regular visitation by sailors (how about that one... ;-). It has been my observation that the VERY BEST (and one in particular is literally the very best, he designed BOUDICCA's sails) sailors that have crashed at my house put down the seat (and make the bed up too!) So in this discussion does indeed relate to multihull sailing, and a standard worth aspiring to.

BTW,
Pecorak: a lack of manners on your part is absolutely no surprise to me. It is my most sincere wish that I never ever have the mispleasure to meet you.

So I guess 3 out of 4 times we need it down, I never thought about it that way. My Mom taught me to put the seat (and the lid) down after every use. That way you won't accidently drop something into it, like a cell phone...

Something about sitting to pee is very unmanly. I'd rather aim well and put the seat down (preferably in that order I'm sure).

No, no. It is better to leave the seat up for general usage for you and wife. Of course, if your wife dies or divorces you and you are having company over, that's different and then you have to put down the seat and the lid.

Can anyone else see the irony of Mary's argument, some words are fine, others are not!!! I'm sure the religious ppl reading this forum will be offended by your blasphemy...

BTW,
Pecorak: a lack of manners on your part is absolutely no surprise to me. It is my most sincere wish that I never ever have the mispleasure to meet you.

I'm glad you've found it worthy to pass judgement on my character based on the ramblings made on a internet discussion board.

Your ramblings don't leave your character much of a chance.

Well that seals it. The Character authorities have spoken. Apparently, I'm lacking in character since I've had the audacity to say what I think and not feel sorry for it.

Guess I need more tires to burn along with all these bridges.

Stay on topic, this thread is about the f word and toilet seats. There are at least 5 other threads for your global warming argument.

and

There is no reason to put just the seat down if you don't put the lid down too. If you're not going to give 100%, why bother?

Can anyone else see the irony of Mary's argument, some words are fine, others are not!!! I'm sure the religious ppl reading this forum will be offended by your blasphemy...

IT'S ALL ABOUT CONTEXT!!!

I don't think it is blasphemous to call upon God or Jesus if my boat is sinking. If I weren't religious, what would be the point?

And I'm not offended by any words, either. There are some words I just don't like -- phlegm, for instance.

Okay, about the toilet seat. It is not just a matter of who needs the seat down the most frequently. There is also the matter of who spends the most time in the bathroom with the seat down. In order to handicap this properly and decide who is responsible for the seat being up or down, we need data on TIME the seat is used as well as FREQUENCY used.

A log-in/log-out chart on the wall above the toilet might be appropriate, including a check for "seat up" or "seat down."

Without good data, we are never going to solve this age-old argument between men and women.

Maugan, I am coming to your defense here. But I am not going to defend Maugan, who acts like a self-centered butt.

I am going to defend Tad Pecorak, who is the really nice, polite, intelligent, unpretentious person I know personally.

I consider Maugan to be your alter ego, and maybe if people google the word "Maugan," they will understand.

If I am wrong and you think that Maugan is the REAL you, please correct me.

This thread is beginning to sound like VHF radio. How are we supposed to get anything accomplished about toilet seats if you guys are going to use it to talk about personal social arrangements?

I'll second this one, Mary. Tad is not really anything like Maugan in the real world. Maugan really is his alter-ego.

Ah, Mary, I get it...

not only is Pecorak rude and self-centered, he's schizophrenic. He just can't help being crass.

This sig would be something witty, but the censors are against that.

At my house there is an understanding, when you go to the bathroom you make sure your equipment is set up like it needs to be. You don't take your boat out without checking that everything is in order don't you? If the seat is up and you need it down then put it there, and vice versa. In 17 years neither one has fallen in nor dropped anything in the drink... wait that doesn't apply here does it?

IF we wanted to argue about something it wouldn't be about the toilet lid!!!!

Tim,

If I put the lid down, all of my pets would die of dehydration.

I swear, those little snotty orphans (we adopted them all from various shelters, so YES they are orphans) start to line up when they hear ANYONE go near the bathroom. One will even stick her paw under the door in an attempt to open the door whilst I am "reading"...

I change the water in their drinking dishes at least twice a day to no avail.

And I have gotten the verbal lambasting from aforementioned animals when the lid is inadvertantly left in the down position.

Same reason I don't use the blue water stuff in the bowl.

And, lastly, having a cell phone lost to the commode is bad, but USING the cell phone in the bathroom is just....well.... wrong.

That is VERY funny.
But just to be clear, for the benefit of the animals do you leave the seat up or the seat down? The animal issue could skew the data.

Cat prefers seat down (extra room and their toes stay warm). Dog doesn't care.

All are female, so I'm outvoted on all angles.

I am a water waster - always flush. My wife, on the other hand, will put tissue in there once in a while (something about makeup), and the animals, whereupon finding this affront to their pedigree (do pound animals have "pedigree"?) shoot that familiar "you are one waste of a pair of pants, aren't you?" look....

Our doggie has a serious bathroom fetish, even after major lambastings from the "leader of the herd" (aka my Wife). Having spent only very short periods of time in the bathroom I'm not sure she even realizes there's water in that big white bowl.
When given the chance she blasts in to a) dive in the waste basket for treasures or b) grab the end of the roll and go running down the hall (her favorite, she loves toilet paper).

The lid is up...the door is closed.

I was looking to for a place to live during my college days and was looking to share an apartment with a guy I worked with. He was ex-military and when I went to see the place, he explained to me that he felt like the utility companies were all in a huge conspiracy...so...dishes were to be washed by hand and using only a minimal squirt of water (can't use the dishwasher), lights on only in rooms being occupied (and minimally at that), and the toilet was to be flushed only once per day. Then he showed me his excessive collection of firearms and munitions for which there was not enough storage and some were to remain to be stored in what would have been my bedroom. Needless to say, I politely left and found somewhere else to live.

Here you go guys--
I work in the operating room of a hospital and most of my friends are guys. Therefore I have heard it ALL and NOTHING shocks me. But I do agree it is preferable to keep the swearing to a mininum when writing.
I have 3 brothers -so as for the toliet seats everyone is on there own! I do prefer that if you pee on the seat wipe if off.
And having a well vs city water-you leave the pee and flush the rest...

So if you only flush the toilet once a day what do you do when you have guests and there is a bad round of hor derves? (SP) I'd hate to get sloppy fifths after all those people dropped a duke before me.

One place where we lived down here in the Keys there was a plaque on the wall above the commode that said, "In this land of sun and fun, we never flush for number one."

Let it mellow.

Wasn't that on "Meet the Folkers"? they did live in Biscayne, didn't they?

I did say I was an admitted water waster. After finally breaking the dog from searching for her favorite "Kitty box crunchies", I didn't want to start her on another bad habit!

Not flushing is gross. But I have my own well, so I guess if you are trying to save money in the city. But yuck. Even if it is #1.

Excuse me folks, but I just have to call "BS" on this thread.

This forum is very (censored) up on this here deal. Lately, my "five star rating" was struck down to three stars, then it went back up to four. Why, I do not know.

But this slam on bad language (of which I have really never done) is getting to be pretty rediculous to me.

So take a look at this and then tell me what you really think. By the way.. as a West Coast sailor, you might notice that I won't survive this opinionated foret into this forum.

It amazes me that you people claim you want to get more women involved in sailing. That you want to get more kids involved in sailing. And yet on this forum I am seeing the F word used more and more.

Why the F--- do you guys do that on a forum that may be read by women and children?

Do you want your young child, who is reading about sailing, to ask you, "What does [censored] mean?" Or, "What does F--- mean?"

Excuse me for saying so, but didn't this forum user (owner) just recently start a thread on something about "what is your best way of using a bad word on a public forum?"

Mary asks for your suggestions on h...way that the web site does not censor it

I have always wondered how users get those ratings, and I never bothered to find out, because I think it is a dumb feature of this forum. But now that you mention it, I figured out how it is done. And, it appears that the number of stars is the average of ratings that people have given you, so I guess if additional people rate you, and give you lower ratings, it would bring your average down. Right now five people have rated you.

However, I do not know whether somebody who has already rated you is able to go back and change their rating of you at a later time. Does anybody know that?

Rating threads makes a little sense, but not rating users.

As far as censoring certain words, I don't like it, and I think the word "censored" is just as bad as, or worse than, using the word it replaces. That's why I have been appealing to people to, instead, censor their own language and think about who might be reading it -- like your mother or grandmother or your children or grandchildren.

Why can't y'all just use the graemlins when you feel the need to get across your emotions? I know I once said that I don't always trust graemlins to be honest about what a person really means by their words. But in most cases I think they work pretty well.

According to Spongebob that I watch with my 6yr old.

These are what you call 'sentence enhancers'. Just sprinkle those words over a sentence and "BAM" you got yourself a Spicy Sentence Sandwich! !

I make a motion that we replace the censored word with "SENTENCE ENHANCER" like he suggests.

Now, if you will just give me the formula for crabby patties, I will be on my way...

That's good!

I should appologize for the statements I made where I went as far as to say that "I have never" used the bad language. That couldn't be farther from the truth and every time I use an absolute term such as "never," I regret it. Well maybe not *every* time, but there I go again!

I surely agree that keeping the language clean sets forth a higher standard and is a good thing to do.

Sometimes you just want to cuss!

So often I say something in a posting that I regret. Rarely I am able to edit it back out of the post. Today is an example of a failure to edit. By the time I decided that I had put my foot in my mouth, the ability to edit had already timed out.

Say, I wonder if that amount of time could and should be increased?

Here's a few spicifiers to liven up my post.

OK, back to toilets...

I am military and my lovely wife of 15 years has learned that you should always do a preflight and a postfligt BDA (battle damage assessment). Sometime a flush is not enough!

Flush twice if necessary and clean up that collateral damage!

Is it just my girlfriend or do all women hold on to it forever? The three flush isn't uncommon in our house. Four isn't outta the question. I should market it for Japanese TV. How many flushes? They could gamble, it would be great. Probably more popular than You Tube.

In the case of the F word thread, I just felt the need to vent about it. And from reading the responses on this thread, I think some men don't realize that many women (at least all the women I know) consider the word to mean rape. It is a term that suggests violence, usually against women.

I can certainly appreciate where all this is going, but I do not take offense to this word. There are other words that truly disgust me, but F--- is not one of them and I kinda like it. My man and I read this with many laughs and he says it's all about luuuuv.

You have our 1gpf government rating to thank for that...1 gallon per flush is not so great if it takes three flushes to clear the battle field.

Jake, thanks to you every time I drop a duke I will smile. Not from the pleasant feeling of an empty bowel, nor the feeling of achievment from making the dog gag. Hey Mike, they still have not checked it out. Interesting use of Co2, but the back draft would be a problem, not to mention the damaged plumbing.
