The boat pictured is my old 1959er. I only sailed her for 5 years and I delivered her back to the family of the old fella who made her a couple of years ago as they were desperate to get her back.
The photo shows her waiting on anchor down from the house for me to go out for the day.
I get a lot of fun out of my newer plastic and kevlar and carbon playthings but I don't know if I will remember them as fondly.

I wouldn't call it "fighting" - more like "friendly competition".

Yeah, that's it - friendly competition

Kind of a Ford/Chevy/Dodge truck kinda thing.

BowtieWarrior:

It does not really matter what Formula 18 you choose. They are all competitive. The rules make for a very tight box(did I just say that out loud?)

We were trying to cross above the Laser windward mark as a puff hit. For a few seconds there, I thought we were going to collect each and every one of those Lasers as we bore away over 90 degrees.

Here is the actual, in the shower discussion:
Laser guy: Was that you on the spin cat?
Me: Ah . . . yeah?
Laser guy: I thought I was done for.
Me (spoken in me best drunkin British accent): Sorry 'bout that, couldn't get that rudder to bight on top of the water for some reason.
Laser guy: How did you turn the boat?
Me (spoken in me best drunkin British accent): donno, good spin trim and eas'ng the main traveler, probably just lucky though
Laser guy: No [censored]?
Me: ya. No [censored]!

something that might help the Bowtie Warrior with his problem. Remember the words of Yoda, "open your mind Luke".

If you want the "how to disable an Opti" manual, please contact Ryan R and his N6.0 of death.

That'll teach him to tack on to port in front of a multi on a powered up reach.

The good news is that there were no injuries or significant damage. I think that kid ended up wanting his dad to buy a multihull after that T-boning he got in Sarasota.

Daniel,

How do you like the G5? Also is that a Zuccoli main on the boat?

Hello Tom

My first sail on the boat was about 30 min. before the start of the first race of the nationals and it was love at first touch. The last Scheurer was very pleasant to sail and the new one is a very definite step up. I weigh 90 kg and had absolutely no trouble keeping the nose out the water even in the big gusts. It has alot of bouyancy down at the waterline and tapers in towards the deck (in the bow area) I did a deliberate nose dive to the front beam and it popped out easily as soon as the rig was depowered. That sail is a Landenberger prototype on a hard Saarberg mast.
A few home videos are here. www.aperturecafe.com/acat

Regards from Zurich

Daniel

Another one.

Yep, H20 Miracle with H18M wings. Fairly simple mod; works great. 20 doesn't hold up as well as the 18 to lots of hull-on-sand beach landings and walking on the decks, but it ain't exactly fragile either, and it still hauls the mail (and five adults).

Hey, how is the upgraded TheMightyHobie18 doing compared to the F-18s and F-16s? It's been a while since we got a report on your project, so it would be fun to hear how it's going.

I am not a lake sailor and the light shifty winds I seem to always encounter at races is difficult for me. The boat goes to weather well. I still need to work on mast prebend as the main tends to be disturbed low and windward, ie lower windward tell-tell will not fly back. I recently broke my endpole system and switched to a midpole. I purchased another used spin but it is only 19m and too full to run hot, does have 3 patches however. My other chute has 2 patches and I haven't checked yet to see if it will snuff without a third patch. The jib system works great, very pleased with that addition. It would be great to attend an event with 10-15kts wind and really test it out but that hasn't occured yet. In the ocean against other 18's it is superior, upwind in light stuff against 18's it is slightly faster. The lift F18's experience from the daggers is very noticable and my boat doesn't lift in that manner. I need to get serious about tuning the boat but I have too many other interests currently. I left the race a day early this weekend to compete in a mt. bike race, too many hobbies and too little time. I would say overall I'm very pleased with the boat!!

I know it's nothing extraordinary, just a stock Wave, but I've sure had fun with it this summer. Because it's so simple to rig and go, I've spent more time on the water this year than anyone else in the sailing club, and more than I did in the 10 years of (previous) Interlake ownership combined. And my wife likes it better because she can be a passenger rather than a crew!

Hey Bill -

Good looking boat. How does that jib work out for you?

From what I've read, it probably works better than a Hobie factory jib! It's a fine tell-tale, but an even better attention getter. This is heavily Indiana University territory, so a burgee from the arch-rival Purdue University is what people notice more than the boat.

Hi Fred, it's Lake Wabamun. In the news again this week; we were lucky to be at the West end of the lake, and were less affected by the oil.

What's the beam on the 18? Looks a little skinny.

Awesome sails/themes!

Race cheap, race faster, Damnit!

I am pretty sure the Sol cat has an 8 foot beam.

Wow! I didn't know there were so many different kinds of boats! Eye opening! A lot of them look very similar, even to a trained eye.

I say we all sell and buy F-18s! What would that look like? 40-50 boats on the line at local regattas. 200-400 at North Americans. I wonder what kind of start line they would need for just 200 F-18s? The other end of the line would probably be over the horizon!!

Attached heli shot of H-16 at RI NAs. This sail plan and the Tequila Sunrise are my 2 all-time favorites.
