I am getting a Nacra 570 for a steal, but no trailer, no sails. It's okay....the trailer for my 5.2 will work.
I need help finding a main (boomless) and jib for it. Does anybody have a reference. The sailmakers in Texas don't have any idea of what the pattern is.
Please help.

In Christ

try Elliot Patterson sails or Calvert Sails. They'll have it.

Are you talking about the boat that was on ebay? It's actually a Nacra 5.7, not the newer 570 model. Elliot Pattison sails were stock for the boat, so I'd talk to them first. If you don't want stock sails, I'd suggest whirlwind sails for the boat.

I think the biggest difference between the 2 were the rudders and a square top on the 570. Call Elliot Pattison and order a square top for it rather than going with a class legal pintop. Believe it or not, the sq top will be cheaper.

So you are buying the boat on there, I was looking at it also! I guess you must be the one other offer. I don't know if I would call it a steal, it needs alot and it will cost quite a bit to get it sailing. The sails will be the worst but there are alot of blocks and stuff that you will need to get.

Actually, I am not going to purchase her. Instead, I am going to refit my 5.2. I just wanted another project, but after pricing the sails, for the price of both the main and jib, I can have a new square top (5.1 oz Dacron) and jib for less than 1.2 the price, from Atlantic Sail Makers. I am sending them my old sails and they will quote me a price with trade in on my new sails. I also sent them a U20 main that I bought off ebay for $50.00 and they purchased her from me for $165.00 with out battens. Anybody need a set of battens from a U20 main. There are 7 of them. I don't need them. I just purchased a new set of battens for my 5.2.
So, who ever wants the 5.7 on Ebay, go for it. I don't want her anymore.

what are ball park figures for a 5.2 new square top main from an established sail maker?

is price the reason you are going for 5.1oz dacron and not mylar?

I am not a racer, by any means. The price on the mylar was not that much higher, as the quote.
The sailmaker quoted me for a 5.1 oz dacron (white) square top, with battens, @ $725.00. No numbers, no logos. I didn't want the logos, but the numbers, I will want. I believe he said an additional $60.00 for my numbers. This price doesn't include shipping. He quoted me $356.00 for the jib. I also was taught that the life of the mylar is not that of a dacron. I am not the every day sailor, like I'd like to be. I have my Ranger 22, monohull that I take out more than my Nacra 5.2, only because when I go to the lake, I tend to bring 2-3 friends.

If not that much difference, go with mylar for the main. I think you will get a LOT better performance and fun. The squaretop will react better and top won't dump as much in a puff. Dacron for the jib should be OK. Just my opinion.

I don't know that I've ever heard of Atlantic Sail Traders in the catsailing world. I'd trust my new cat sails to someone who is in the industry and has a good reputation with catamaran sails like www.whirlwindsails.com or the like.

I have to agree with Trey BIG TIME on that one. A friend of mine had a chute made by a local sailmaker that convinced him he could do it and knew how to make a "reacher". He ended up with big piece of crap on the front of his boat. Whirlwind sails are made by Chip Buck. Incase you don't know who that is, he made sails for Hobie Cat for years. Then went to makin windsurfer sails and now back to beachcats and is AWESOME. There was a Hobie 20 at Steeple Chase with a nice square top by him. Did I mention NICE? It looked better than the class sail that was on the boat I was on. You can't beat his prices either.

Yea I had my reacher and main on my 17 cut by Bob Curry when he was with Sabre. They came out GREAT!!!! You want someone who know what they are doing and has the knowledge to tell you how to measure your boat first, so they are right for the boat. I know a few who have gotten sails from Chip and they are very happy.

hey gree,
my copy of "catamaran racing for the 90's finally turned up", (ordered 2nd hand from the usa, delivered new from germany???)

and i've been catching up on how mast pre-bend allows a powerful downhaul system to control the sail shape in a way that was not possible with the older straight spreader masts

now since your and my old 5.2 masts have straight spreaders it seems we shouldn't spend as much time on downhaul control as people with swept spreader masts

you mentioned earlier that you didn't really want to start using airborne's newer 5.2 mast as it would mean drilling out all the new stainless rivets you used to install your new downhaul system to your old mast

BUT if the newer mast has swept spreaders maybe you'd better get drilling so you can control that new squaretop...

Yeah, I have decided to go ahead and make the change. actually I already have made the change on many of the parts. I don't know if it will really matter, but if I want to get really advanced I might look into prebend but I do not think the sailmaker cuts the 5.2 square for prebend so it wouldn't do me much good.

If you're going to be buying a new sail, now's the time to go prebend. Talk to the folks at Whirlwind sails about getting it cut for pre-bend. If they won't do it, talk to Calvert or Glaser or whoever. You may find that a custom designed sail is not much more money than an off-the-rack one.

I guess I will add my .02 to this prebend square top stuff. I had Smyth build a sqaure top mylar/taffeta for my 5.2 and told him to design in some prebend. Once I got the sail I swept the spreaders and prebent the mast to match the sail. With the addition of some new downhaul, I was quite pleased with the outcome. It is another of those you get what you pay for things.

As to what sailmaker to use, make sure that they routinely make multihull sails. The usual mono suspects are not used to seeing the apparent wind that far forward, and I suspect you will not be pleased with the results (especially if that involves recutting a brand new sail to get it right).

Whirlwind sails is run by a guy who used to run Hobie's sail loft and also makes alot of windsurfer sails. So they know all about making fast sails.

It sounds like others have done this with the 5.2 so I will probably plan on getting the sail cut with a little prebend in it. Between the spin and the new sail I am going to have a turboed up 5.2.
